| The tide seems to be turning for the Swans on 11:07 - Sep 18 by union_jack | The question is whether it’s instinct or orders! We know he can do it but tends no to, at least not often enough. If we were sharper in that part of the field instead of stopping for a cup of tea whilst the opposition regroup, we’d be a lot better off. |
There's only one season where he's looked like the kind of player he can be and that's the Potter season. Question is whether that was a one off or down to Potter's ability to get into his head.

While we were unlucky not to have scored more the fact is goals 2&3 were gifts. Set up by pressure but gifts none the less. We have dominated teams this season but got nothing for the efforts.

It seems like as a general rule there are two types of Matt Grimes pass. The first is what I call the wall pass. It's played into his feet and then almost immediately goes straight back to whoever passed it to him, usually as a one touch. It can be done when he's under pressure with a player behind him, or even more often when he's in ten yards of space. The second is the behind pass. It's a ball stroked towards an advancing player, but not into the space in front of him. Usually it's played towards where he is rather than where he's going. Invariably then the receiving player is forced to check his run to control the ball, and in extreme cases go back to get it. I curse Grimes more for this kind of pass than any other. These probably don't make up the majority of the kind of passes he makes, but it feels like it sometimes.

It seems innocuous but it slows everything down. And it happens all the time.

That loanee Cundle looks promising. |
That was from Cabango looking at the highlights? Manning combine with JP for his first crossbar hit. Cundle gave Piroe a beautiful one touch lay off too.

| The tide seems to be turning for the Swans on 09:39 - Sep 18 by Dr_Winston | My biggest problem with Grimes hasn't changed. He is nowhere near ambitious enough. There were numerous occasions yesterday when a clear forward pass was on, or space he could have carried the ball into. Instead, as per usual, too often he dithered on the ball and gaps closed up, or he made the "safe" pass. If he took the ball on the turn more often that would be a start. I know he's got the quality to be more aggressive because, as you say, on occasion he is. It just doesn't happen anywhere near often enough for me. It's a mentality thing with him rather than an ability one. |
But Grimes is our catalyst, our fulcrum, our dynamo, our heartbeat, held back by babysitting Downes, now he's unleashed he'll rip this league to pieces , err except he hasn't. Think most see him for what he is, a decent, hard working reliable but unambitious, safety first midfield player. Would love to see him drive at the defense and take a few shots on rather than passing the responsibility to someone else in a worse position. Take ownership, you're the capt for gods sake.

Statistically it's an excellent pass. Forwards, completed, and often into the opponents half. This is why statistics, particularly when it comes to a player like Grimes, need to be treated with caution.

I agree, Grimes looks a ot better since Allen came back. It led me to post the question, was Downes that good or was it actually him causing the problem? Since Allen has slipped in Grimes looks more comfortable and he does get forward more quickly. Cundle does look promising, right place right time for his goal so maybe he has good instincts.

Long may it continue...I have been a critic of Martin's but it does seem he has ditched his approach which wasnt working..Im always happy if we are getting results if MArtin adapts gets us winning and plays attacking not just dull possession for possession sakes football Ill be happy. Lets not forget though we had a "purple" patch last season which included us completeing the first ever doube in the Cardiff derby it all went pear shaped a few games later and the start to this season wasnt great. If we continue to see progress I am sure everyone will be happy.....its not about the individual but what they deliver for SCFC for me.

Or could you say our defence last year was too slow and couldn't complete for the high ball, add that to the suicidal passing out from the back forcing Downes with his pace to get back. We now have more pace and aerial power with Woods and hopefully we keep the suicidal passing to a minimum, enabling the midfielders to compete in the midfield more often than at the back. We seem to have a more settled team and players seem to know and expect where their own players are going to be on the pitch, especially after substitutions were Martin has previously swapped a player from one side of the pitch only to swap him back again five minutes later, as other substitutions are made, sometimes moving 3 players into different positions. Is Martin's final getting a tune out of his team, time will tell. [Post edited 4 Oct 2022 9:11]
