| Why do we play this way on 17:41 - Oct 19 by RichardO | Long pass out of the box to Obafemi, Oko Flex got close to him, 1-2 played and opened Reading up, classic counter attack Let's not comment of the offside and the poor finish, it was the thought that counted |
It wasn’t a long pass to obafemi. It was a two yard bounce to him off a tackle.

My bad about long pass so much going on can't recall it all in exact detail but maybe proves a point about attackers being closer to each other.

That is the aim, but you increase and decrease your chances of being able to do that by doing certain things. Those things are what is being discussed.

It works. 5 wins out of 6, even 6 out of 8 is probably the best run we’ve been on for a number of years.

He’s talking about the first half, at the time it was posted. We dfdnt play like this at any point in this run other than in that half… which we lost.

| Why do we play this way on 10:05 - Oct 20 with 372 views | controversial_jack | We need to stop being so naive in defense. Sometimes putting the ball our or getting it back ot the keeper quicker, than trying to win individual duels with forwards, Naughten and Darling have both tried this recently and lost out to stronger players and cost us goals | | | |

Due to the gaps opened up by playing the other way. If the other way worked then we wouldn’t need the new way. We know it doesn’t however.

There were 18/19 players in their final third for both second half goals. That’s not a lot of gaps. Of course. The new way is far better. The old way will still be needed against teams who park the bud.

You can’t isolate single passages of play and claiming they are the old way, it’s crazy. Their players were set up to defend, there will always be players behind the ball regardless of style. It’s about exploiting those gaps and pulling players out of position, that was down to how we changed. If the old way worked then we wouldn’t need the new one would we.

I can’t isolate single passages of play as in the goals we scored? The first 15 minutes of the second half was mainly that scenario anyway. Of course there will always be defenders behind the ball. There won’t always be 9 of them with 8 of ours in close proximity. That won’t happen when we play direct. Completely agree with your last point. It wouldn’t have worked in most of the games we have won in the last month or two. It’s just better against teams like Reading. As you said yourself re. Russell Martin, a one size fits all policy won’t work.

No, because that isn’t using the goal in context. If we scored a goal using that alone and it was the old way shining through as the way forward… we wouldn’t be one of the worst teams in the league when we do it. Goals will be scored in all shapes and sizes during all sorts of tactics, but it doesn’t mean the tactics change based on the 10 seconds of goal time - it’s all incorrect. Man City score goals from KDB 50 yard passes, defender clearances and 2 yard 50 pass tippy tappy… but the system is the same. It’s that system that allows them to score all those manner of goals. It would be false to isolate each goal and pretend it was a product of a different style depending on the 10 seconds of play. We are looking for a constant, something that will give us the best chance possible of winning most matches - thats isn’t Martinball. Subtle changes can be made to that to counter something weak on the other side.. but the way we should play is the way suggested and what has got us on this run.

It was the first 15 minutes of the second half, not just the 30 second highlight clip. It’s pertinent that we scored two goals and won the corner that led to the other with most of both teams in their final third. We played that way because Reading forced us to. You know full well that we can’t play direct with no pace outside of Obafemi who isn’t big enough to play direct to when teams park the bus. One size fits all is a recipe for disaster. It ignores opposition strengths, weaknesses and tactics.

As I said the style was consistent from the start of the second half, the data backed that up completely as we went along. It was the introduction of Flex that helped facilitate that as he took up the Dyer role. But this should have been done from the start and a stark difference from what we had seen previously.

Honestly mate, that’s utter nonsense. Both teams played completely differently after we equalised, it was even more apparent after our third.

I understand that’s what you think, but it’s not what happened. Possession, long balls, pass count - it was consistent through the half. As you say, it’s just the eyeball test for you, we know that is often inaccurate, wildly so on occasion. I had the live analytics. I think I remember us having a similar discussion about you insisting Cabango never made bursts forward with the ball and said I was talking nonsense until I brought up his heat map. The data is the data.

Show me the data that says we had roughly the same amount of possession, played roughly the same amount of long balls and had roughly the same pass completion in the first 15 minutes of the second half as the last 15 minutes.

Well you would have to join me in a time machine if you want to do that. However if you had one I would suggest we attend more pressing matters of interest. I assure you that’s what happened. You can insist I’m lying if you like, but it won’t change what happened.
