No one talks about process. By definition the play in the development stages of the process is not the same as the play at the end of the process.

The early stages might have had an emphasis on passing and possession. Only after this stage is complete slick passing and possession in a more direct way becomes playable with he players at hand. Longer balls have to be accurate.

Martin has made no secret that last season was a developing stage. It is no surprise to see the style evolve. The argument that this new winning is due to the failure of the process is bogus in my opinion. Some argue the club is winning because it is playing a winning style. This is is self defining. Martin has taken the team through a process. The current good performances are a result of the process not a result of ditching the process in my opinion.

Martin is the manager and he always had to adapt to get better results. He is adapting with the added coaching staff I have always recommended. Cooper would have done better himself had he brought in hired help to get him away from his turgid style of play successful as it was.

I am still not convinced he is a top six manager. Perhaps he has adapted into one with the addition of seasoned pros like Joey Allen and Mr Purslow. This is probably the best series of results in his whole career. It remains to be seen if he can keep the club around the top six.

We both know that is nonsense though don’t we.

An evolution is a slow gradual change. This is a falling off a cliff scrapping of the style in place for the one the likes of yours truly have been saying we should be playing for a long time.

There is zero chance that Russ wanted to play anything remotely like this, this was not the plan. If it was then we wouldn’t have signed Fisher and shipped out any player with an iota of pace about them.

This is a rescue mission for his job. Who has directed it is unclear.

I have probably forgotten more about the game than you could ever know. Hence I am able to make such correct statements like I made on August 27th. Any manager playing that way knowing it doesn’t work should be sacked - he’s lucky he wasn’t, very lucky.

If RM has a successful season then it’s very likely he has continued the way we said he should be playing 14 months ago, my head my fall off in vindication possibly.

Wrong about what? Wanting a manager out that plays Martinball?

The results with Martinball state I’m absolutely spot on.

No investigation needed regarding your trolling of NL. I remember it well. You said you were going to meet him for a dust up, claimed he didn’t show up and you left your name in the bogs to prove it.

Your persona took a hammering after you insisted your other half was a barrister only for someone to find out she was a barista.

Months later you fessed up to say dgt73 wasn’t a real person so it was okay you lied as he was a fantasy character.

You have always got obsessive over people who you deem are better than you, it seems you are developing another dose.

I think it’s more to do with not having the sufficient finances to do so.

But the result is the same, any competent manager should get a play off standard squad competing in the play offs.

It’s where we should be, not some miracle of patience. “Patience” has put us at a tremendous disadvantage that didn’t need to happen. We now have the likes of Fisher taking up a fairly large wage to play a style that has been scrapped.

That could have been better spent on some wing backs or a top quality loan to push us on.

Let's be clear about the actual course of events over the past 14 months.

1 Martin comes in, insisting that there is no Plan B, it's Martinball or nothing. The club removes pretty much everyone associated with previous managers apart from KO'L, which may or may not be at Martin's instigation. Some of us express concern that he's a pretty young and inexperienced manager, and could do with some support, and are slated for it.
2 Certain posters on social media declare that he is "the real deal" before a ball is kicked and declare that we mustn't judge him until he's had at least a season and a half (sometimes two) and/or at least three transfer windows (including the one he joined halfway through) so he can assemble the squad of his dreams. With the qualification that the evil owners might deprive him of the backing needed to execute his master plan, so even if he fails, it will never be his fault.
3 We endure a pretty pointless season of under-achievement with some frankly iffy new recruits, and everything strongly suggests that he plans to do exactly what he did at MK Dons: play a rigid, predictable style of football with lots of possession for possession's sake, and end up mid table.
4 But we win the double for the first time ever so he gets triple XP and a special power-up which means his job is safe until the next season.
5 Season 2 starts like like season 1, but worse. We are in freefall.
6 Something happens that makes Martin junk everything he's tried to date and rotate 180 degrees. Suddenly the squad - who most of us said all along had the talent to compete for the play-offs - are playing with obvious joy and delivering the goods, freed of the shackles of Martinball. Before you know it we have gone from relegation zone to play-off positions.

If anyone thinks that this describes the culmination of a plan that Martin was hatching from the day he was appointed then I have a London bridge that you might be interested in investing in.

He's had a decent run of games recently, by abandoning everything he stood for previously. Of course you don't sack a manager under those circumstances. But you don't erect a statue of him or give him the freedom of the city either. Not yet anyway.

an abolutely spot on statement with no insults or personal attacks

it is amazing that so many still cling to this belief that patience has paid off and there is no shift in his way of playing.

Amazing some talk we are in the second phase yet choose to ignore the fact key elements of Martin's way Fisher and Darling have spent the majority of our recent resurgence and winning run on the bench

Which part do you believe indicates any upset?

As long as he continues to play Dr P ball then I’m relatively happy, if a little disconcerted that he will drop it for Martinball at any time.

Opinions will always be divided, I was very happy to try something new following a couple of years of Cooperball but I’ve have had serious doubts about Martin at times too, but the one thing I am slightly reassured about is that he does, as you imply, seemed to have developed the ability to adapt, which in return makes me more patient. One thing is that is 100% certain is that the OP is a pointless individual with very little value to add and should be mostly ignored.

The argument is becoming tedious.

The essence of what RM has always wanted to do remains. We're still heavily possession based. We still pass the ball far more than most teams. We're considerably less intent on defending like hell then pumping the ball into the channels than we were under his predecessor. "Martinball" hasn't gone anywhere. It has however been tweaked a bit.

The main difference is that there is less passing for the sake of passing. Mostly we aren't as suicidally idiotic when in possession near our own penalty area (although clearly still a work in progress) as we were before.

We're not the finished article, and despite the recent run of form I suspect that we're still a couple of players short of a promotion winning team. We lack pace, and could really use Piroe and Paterson finding their feet again.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Adaptability is key. Passing and possession is not the problem for me, in fact I’m delighted that it’s at the fundamental core of our approach, but it’s the pace at which we executed it that was/is our undoing. We beat ourselves more than any other team because we fall in to the trap of believing that to successfully play keep-ball you do not need to press, when in fact the opposite is true. For keep-ball to be effective we have to move the opposition around and it looks like Russ is trying to do that now. It seems that if he is successful we will have a team that is a first division hybrid of a Rodgers/Laudrup side.

Agree. This is where I think midfield lets us down a bit, and why I'm critical of Grimes. Running around, working hard and making plenty of passes is all well and good, but ultimately pointless if you're not doing anything with it.

When his tail is up and he's driving play forward we look a much better side. When we're just aimlessly going from side to side not so much. He's not helped sometimes by the lack of pace on the flanks offering us an outlet to get in behind the defensive lines, but too many chances to attack space get spurned for me.

I think there is a change in our fortunes going forwards, scoring more goals and effectively creating more space for goal scoring opportunities. For me there is a huge sea change there. If it ticks tomorrow as we hope I can’t see Cardiff getting near us. The defence has to be more awake, and the inclusion of Harry Darling is almost alert so he has to be switched on. That’s where Cardiff will see their best chances, against a defence that can go to sleep at times.

A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.
