If back in August you were told we would be equal 6th going into the World Cup break, would you have been happy?
I would have been.

Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

He reached his limit of games with us.

There is a reason he stopped at 49 appearances and then was never given a sniff. He was never playing another game for us whether the manager liked him or not.

Bennett was the roadblock to getting in more bodies. That roadblock was removed by an early lump payment for less than we would have been liable for over the course of that year. That saving was then used to supplement the squad this season.

For all the criticism the Americans take, they aren’t stupid and if it’s one thing they know is business. That decision was basic business.

Good reply and thanks.
However, the core issue is what replaced him .

Does this include player the coach has brought in .

I’m unsure where you are going with that but overall most if the players are not good enough to play at the level and standard the coach wants. However, equal sixth, I’m sure is an issue for some.,

Why release him and bring in Darling

We need a simply stopper CH

It’s the stroking about that Bennett “ failed” . It’s the least important function of a CH

Because Harry Darling is head and shoulders above Ryan Bennet and has a sell on figure potentially millions above his purchase fee 💁

Just a thought.

One needs to ask the question why Bennett is no longer playing professional football. He is currently unregistered after leaving us so could sign a contract with any club at any time, so basically nobody wants him?

Which is why Martin is not a good manager

"good" managers in all walks of life make best use of the resources available to them

What Martin is trying to achieve is impossible at this level...he would need to be at Man City or similar to do that....and even then Man City have never played possession for possessions sake.

Allen,Fulton and Naughton have played at PL level Manning was once sought after by PL clubs...

We have a squad of players many other Championship clubs would be envious of take those sunglasses off Keith you may be able to see more clearly

So where the club are in the league means he is making the best of the resources he has ?

Even though we supply the website with quite clear and concise reports on the swans ( which you clearly don’t read ) which at times provide sensible critique, and are carefully evidenced and thorough ? I can supply you with many reports on Martin which are unfavourable and offering our opinion. Not including of course things like ‘fraud’ liar’ from this who post these things without the slightest care as to who reads it.

People need to start writing like adults regardless of their opinion, and leave the insults for other areas in life.

BTW I wear sunglasses a lot, it’s a necessity of living here.

it's all about opinions but I am confused previously you have stated your personal posts are not the views of the articles which I do read by the way

we are where we are by circumstances we cos be in a much better position if Martin picked players in their positions and played to their strengths
Much has been said of square pegs in round holes but actually he picks round pegs in square holes they fit but dont fill the slot ....eg picking Lati at wing back

I have called him a fraud but never a liar my posts have usually been backed up with data and never had any insults or personal attacks I have tried to act like an adult unlike sole poster on here who have insulted me called me names and they received no ban.....
By the way my sunglasses post was meant tongue in cheek hence the smileys....

my rating of Martin as a manager is based on my experiences in my career I have learnt what are the characteristics of a good manager and Martin lacks many of these...and that's before his footballing management....many on here are critical of his approach and it is true on the other forums....I'm sorry if I upset you but maybe you need to grow a thick skin like others on here have learnt to

Also important to note that we aren’t equal 6th, not sure why that keeps being said. If we were equal 6th then we would be a play-off team should the season end today, and the FA would have to decide what metric breaks the tie.

We are 8th. We have a negative goal difference.

Worried about being eighth or equal on GD for sixth ?

There seems to be an obsession with our current position as if its brilliant. If you look at the table though, we are 8th and only 8 points off the relegation zone, a bad month and we could easily be down in the dumps.

We still have over half the season to play, on the last 5 games (form chart) we would be heading towards only 50-55 points which could see us finish lower than last season. At this stage isn't the points gap more important than the position. When we cannot be relegated, that's a good thing, as long as we are still in with a shout of the to 6, also good. As the season progresses these things become clear but there is more to it than current league position.
Our form over the first 21 games has us finishing about 65-70 points, I'd have been failry happy with that back in August. It's safe.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Correct. The best (and only) predictor of that is how we are playing and our approach to games as it’s been shown to be a stark difference between the two.

If you take away the period where he ditched his style he brought here, would we be bottom? If not then we would certainly be close to bottom.

So it depends which way he decides we are approaching things when we return, our current league position pales into insignificance when it is put up against the importance of that.

If that were the case you would see intermittent back and forth from game to game, completely random with no pattern whatsoever.

That’s not what we see, we see prolonged spells of one or the other, which suggests it is by design. You can also match it up against league position to show that we adopt a direct approach when we are at a low ebb and return to the initial version of play when at our peak.

It was the same pattern we saw last year too.

A couple of weeks ago I made this:-

Martinball typically sees the 666 pattern (an apt sign).

65%+ possession
600+ passes
6% or less long balls

If two or more of the above are present we shall attribute it to Martinball, if two or more are missing we shall attribute to Sensibleball.

Also just like last year I have removed any matches where either side has had a red card as the stats get skewed by unequal player numbers.

Rotherham (MARTINBALL) 1-1 Draw

Possession: 74% (?!)
Passes: 589
Long passes: 34
Long pass %: 5.7% (?!

Blackburn (MARTINBALL) 3-0 loss

Possession: 71% (?!)
Passes: 708 (?!)
Long passes: 46

Blackpool (SENSIBLEBALL) 1-0 win

Luton (MARTINBALL) 2-0 loss

Possession: 75% (?!)

Stoke (SENSIBLEBALL) 1-1 draw

Possession: 52%
Passes: 428

Long pass %: 13.6%

QPR (SENSIBLEBALL) 1-0 win

Possession: 46%
Passes: 530

Sheff Utd (SENSIBLEBALL) 1-0 loss

Hull (SENSIBLEBALL) 3-0 win

WBA (SENSIBLEBALL) 3-2 win

Possession: 56%
Passes: 458

Long pass %: 13.3%

Watford (SENSIBLEBALL) 2-1 win

Possession: 52%
Passes: 448

Long pass %: 9.2%

Sunderland (SENSIBLEBALL) 2-1 win

Possession: 51%
Passes: 477

Reading (MARTINBALL*) 3-2 win

Possession: 74% (?!)
Passes: 698 (?!)
Long passes: 25
Long pass %: 3.6% (?!)

(*We will keep this as a Martinball result, but there was a first half of Martinball (lost 2-1) and a second half of sensible ball (win 2-0) this was commented on at the time, but for arguments sake we will give the whole thing to Martinball).

Bristol C (MARTINBALL) 1-1 draw

Possession: 72% (?!)
Passes: 651 (?!)
Long passes: 31
Long pass %: 4.7% (?!)

Preston (MARTINBALL) 1-0 loss

Possession: 72% (?!)
Passes: 746 (?!)
Long passes: 32
Long pass %: 4.3% (?!)

Wigan (MARTINBALL) 2-2 draw

Possession: 77% (?!)
Passes: 658 (?!)
Long passes: 23
Long pass %: 3.5% (?!)

6 points from a possible 21 playing Martinball. 0.86 points per game.

20 points from a possible 27 playing Sensibleball. 2.2 points per game.

As you can see, when we went on this run that we have been riding on the back of for the last few months (Stoke to Sunderland) we had an average possession of 52%. That spans a block of 7 consecutive games, that’s by design.

A few of those games we actually had less than 50% and the opposition actually had more passes than us. A completely different style of play altogether.

I am going to echo what Whitey posted, we are dictated on how we would like to play by how the way the opposition approach the game......those stats of each game and my memory of them definetly indicates those stats are not a true reflection of the game....stats are a decent indication but very rarely shows a true picture.

Leave the stats to the stats guys and the football to the football guys.
Teams who come and sit will allow us more time with the ball, they will be more compact and have more men behind the ball and that lowers our forward balls and will make us pass the ball shorter in the goal of stretching them and creating spaces thus meaning we will recycle the ball more.

The style that many are calling for and think it can just be switched on.....they need to realise that unfortunately we are playing against 11 other players and it's not a game that we can just turn up to and make it magically happen.

We are 8th, we are for the first time in a few years building a foundation at the club......all is in a good place.

I can only echo what I responded with to that point. Of how we play is simply dictated by the opposition then you would see that in the data, it would have no pattern, would not coincide with league position and let’s not forget that Russell himself at the start of that run that “we are doing it a bit differently”.

It’s chalk and cheese and a completely different way of playing. You could even break that down by pass number per every 1% of possession, short passes per every 1% of possession etc etc which would eliminate the oppositions influence and it would show the same data. It would solely show how we play when we have it. Your memory and the data is not a fair fight. The data always beats memory.

I know some don’t like to admit that we play two different ways, one when Martin is in trouble and another when he feels he is free to revert to it - but we very clearly do.

It is completely up to us how we approach games, be it fast and direct or slow and short.

Indeed. Martin has always said that he plays the same way and doesn’t concentrate on what the other team are doing, he will play the same way regardless.

Except when we are down the bottom and he plays direct in order to get results… then goes back to that philosophy knowing the points earned by the former can cushion the failure of the latter.

It’s the correct opinion.

Play a more expansive, attacking team and we’ll have less of the ball, less territory, more varied attacks and will probably create better chances.

Next time we play a Huddersfield, they’ll try to stifle us without the ball and worryingly, have a good chance of succeeding

Its not a sport that can be dictated as an individual team but it's one where you have to play against another team, 11 players so all well laid plans are never as simple as going on to the grass and it just falls into place.

Once people get the fact that possession is kept to recycle the ball and ultimately try and allow us to play then the better.....this is dictated also by how the other team play or set up, unfortunately it's not in our own hands as much as we want to play a way, it doesn't always work out like that.

I think it was clear the way we played Millwall at home was the way that Martin wants to play, we'll atleast for the first 90mins 🙈

I think a lot of people can't see the way things are trying to be played, unfortunately I think a lot have been fooled by some on here who have created mistruths to tally with their agenda towards Martin.

I think as a team in 8th, a team just on the edge of the play offs with an average squad age of 22 is a very respectable position to be in with a 37yr old manager at the helm. The foundation is a bonus for me, I think we were sleep walking a bit previously under Cooper and were looking for instant success......after that Brentford final we could have easily have been in a dog fight and possible relegation battle, Martin came in and eventually settled things and true to his word said that we would see an improvement in league positioning.

It’s the correct opinion.

Play a more expansive, attacking team and we’ll have less of the ball, less territory, more varied attacks and will probably create better chances.

Next time we play a Huddersfield, they’ll try to stifle us without the ball and worryingly, have a good chance of succeeding

It’s statistically not the correct opinion, the data is clear.

Passes per 1% of possession eradicated that notion, as amount of possession then gets negated. Once you break down per 1% then the data is exactly the same.

When the manager has breathing room we will look to dominate the ball and put less focus on winning the game by any means, our style of play can remain uncompromised with the safety net of league position behind us.

When the manager is under the cosh and needs results he ditches that style and goes direct to win at all costs, and due to the quality of our players, we usually do.

If this was purely due to how opposition sets up there would be no pattern and no correlation between those patterns and league position - but there clearly is.

It’s not purely down to how the opposition set up, but that is a significant factor that shouldn’t be ignored.

We’ll see how it looks after the next four games. If we’ve still got 70 odd % possession, huge pass completion, minimal long balls etc against teams who try to beat us, then I’m back in the Martin out camp.

Unless Norwich etc decide to follow the Wigan and Huddersfield blueprint, but I very much doubt they will.
