| Garrick on 21:32 - Jan 5 by magicdaps10 | So we were the only offer for a teenage Briton at West Ham in your opinion? Fair enough. 11 years later he finally makes it as a premier league player, for me that would suggest that West Ham made the right call 11 years prior. I bet West Ham let a lot of other teenage players leave at that time who didn't progress.....for instance their captain of their successful youth team who many thought would go on and play for England.....Izzy Iriekpen. Some don't progress once they move down, very few do but you can't wait around for ever for something that might never happen........the boy needs to play football and currently he's not up to it at the kev we are at. Hopefully as I say....he does progress in the future as Leon did. |
Yes. Why else would he come back to bottom of league 2? This isn’t about West Ham, it’s about other clubs higher than league 2. You are making the assumption that because he (Garrick) went to bottom of league 1 club, then that’s his level. Yet you are ignoring the fact that Leon Britton (and others) came to us when at the foot of league 2 when their ability even at the time was to play far higher than that. Lee Trundle is another obvious one. It’s completely unfair to put a player in a box like that simply due to their destination in a transfer. We all know different to that reality as we have experienced the opposite first hand.

| Garrick on 16:58 - Jan 5 by Dr_Winston | A neat finisher but his ability on the ball was nowhere near the standard required. Being fast is one thing, being fast in football is another. Might kick on from here but more likely he's found his level. |
Agree. Ball control very poor.

I am not making the assumption that the bottom of league 1 is his level , if you read again, the assumption that I made was that he isn't up to championship level currently. My assumption is based on the fact that he didn't sign for another championship team and ultimately signed for a team bottom of league 1. Hopefully he progresses back up the league and proves people wrong......thats his challenge but the main thing is that he continually enjoys playing wek in week out professionally.

But again, Leon Britton could have played far higher than bottom of league 2, same as Trundle - but after showcasing themselves that’s where they ended up in transfer. To say that’s their level is silly. Above league 1 is the Championship, if you conclude he isn’t up to championship standard simply based on the club he signed for, then you are saying that’s his level. Players sign for clubs in lower divisions all the time that can play at levels above. You need to judge on each individual and on far greater information than who they sign for.

"Players sign for clubs in lower divisions all the time that can play at levels above. You need to judge on each individual and on far greater information than who they sign for." Spot on paragraph, I have watched Garrick hoping that he could improve but it is obvious that numerous management discussions have taken place and a move was the best option. Funnily enough i thought the mirror image about Morgan Whittaker better ball control but physically weaker. Some loanee young players immediately look at home slotting in seemlessly, i remember fans walking out giving the Guehi home debut a going over whilst at half time we all thought we had a real player.
| Garrick on 13:40 - Jan 6 with 543 views | ReslovenSwan1 | Garrick has many attributes. Strength, speed, good dribbler with fast feet. He won a Penalty v QPR I recall. I saw two games where he was a standout albeit against lower league opposition. Northampton and Cambridge. Injuries curtained his progress but he appears to be over them last season playing 50 times for Plymouth, I was impressed with his wing back run out against Stevenage (his last Swansea game) where he assisted for Goykeres's only Swansea goal. He needed to kick on this season but was sent to the loan graveyard Lincoln where neither Whittaker no Cullen impressed particularly last season. I am not certain but perhaps his last run in the Swansea team ended with a red card v Luton June 2020 which must have been in Covid extension period. Cooper gave him a chance and he blew it with an act of petulance. It just goes to show that players must take their opportuities when given. Martin moved him on after both his pre-seasons. Off to the lower leagues and he can develop or sink there. His u21 mates included Cain Harries, Aron Lewis, Alex Samuel, CBR who are making a living and international stars like Dan James, Rodon and Roberts who are millionaires. | |

I recall Mark Gower playing 'at his level' of league 1 or 2 with Southend. He grew to be a premier league player and snatching a late chance to give Brendan a 1-0 win at Anfield.

Players progress for sure, some have to work through the leagues, some gave to take a step down to then work their way back up.....sone just slot straight in and are at the level required immediately. Garrick needs to knuckle down, enjoy his football and hopefully can prove a few people wrong.

I agree he does need to enjoy his football at the level he is at currently and see where it takes him. I would guess ( no stats to back this up ) that the number of players falling from higher level to play at lower levels never to return are far greater than those who rise back up to the great heights again. Other opinions are available - but not from me

He needs to build his confidence and have faith in his ability, like anyone in any job, but he needs help and guidance from a Manager who is not afraid to trust him and guide him and help build his confidence when he makes a mistake.

Yep, I’m making no judgement on whether this is a good decision or not, I have no opinion. Only addressing what Daps said in that where he is going is proof of his ability, essentially.

Martin does not rate him. Cooper gave him some game time before a silly red card and a final run out as a RWB in a FA cup tie where he mixed it up with the lower league hard nuts.. The Forest Green manager has received very upbeat reports from his Swansea contacts that may include club insiders who have seen him develop through the clubs academy. I saw Garrick stand out Northampton and Cambridge. They may see promise in a player that managers do not. For me a 6 foot Jamaican speedster with strength after 60 league 1 games and fast feet and a Swansea development has a good chance. [Post edited 7 Jan 2023 1:14]

I hope you are right and wish the kid all the best. Football is a ruthless business and not all can make it sadly. I hope this one proves the club wrong. More importantly hope he has a long and enjoyable career, at whatever level he finds himself.
