Exceptions are exceptions.

Those exceptions come in the form of over or under performance.

The fact is that salary budget DOES have a direct correlation to league performance. How that manifests itself is essentially down to the manager.

Put Dr Doolittle of charge of Man City and you will see that have less of an effect. But in terms of assuming competence is at a sufficient level:

Transfer spend, squad value and salary budgets are the key movers in predicting success. This is the case for every league in the land.

To pretend this is not the case because of the tiny minority of clubs that still manage to achieve success through other means is just logically flawed. The law of large numbers will state there is a very distinct line between success and spending correlations, anomalies will simply be anomalies - if doesn’t affect the principle.

Peter Risdale followed this mantra. Spend more on transfer fees and wages and that in comparison with other teams is roughly where you will end in the league. This assumes all other teams were as incompetent as Cardiff. He and Tan have followed this mantra but have done it without a football philosophy, no use of the academy and patchy recruitment where no player has been sold for more than their buying price.

This statistical approach taken as a mantra while not taking care of other aspects leads to huge debts and massive losses for owners. Stoke Middlesborough Bolton Derby. Coming third and losing in he play offs is no good at all.

Yo yo teams probably do this but Swansea and Brentford more recently broke the rules.

Net spend is cash. Cash is simple to understand and relevant to me at least. You do not need to be an accountant to understand it. It is not related to asset valuations as Phil Foden came from the academy.

The fog of accountancy needs clearing. Ayew was a high valuation player helping Swansea on the field but his valuation was dropping like a stone and nothing could be done about it. His high wages would not be matched by anyone else so no one was interested in him.

All players are declining assets over their whole careers. The value depends on their age career development and contract length.

Piroe's value peaked last January but is now probably declining. No one offered a fee for him or Swansea 'notionally superstar' Manning some fans demand the club throw money at. Manning wants too much money at Swansea and too much money elsewhere if associated with a transfer fee.

I believe the market for Championship players has fallen off a cliff. This make the US business model extinct. Player trading is now not so easy. This has meant to keep the team competitive the American are having to inject capital. It seems to me most teams are losing £2m a month not taking into account selling players.

How did Jenkins do it in 2011? They had players like Pratley on long low contracts and class players like Gower from the lower leagues. Monk, Tate, Williams, Britton, Dyer were not on big deals I would think. Taylor was young and came from Wrexham and Allen was a kid. De Vries and Scotland came from Scotland and Scotland was sold. Sinclair and Borini probably saw a short cash injection the get the team over the line.

The abuse of Jenkins still astonishes me. To match what he did will need some magical work by Winter and the US people. Jenkins was 'mugged' by forum nobodies and cliques of dimwits that drove a fake narrative. Many associated with the fans ownership group have run to the hills for anonymity while they fake narrative lives on in the soul of east Stand radicals.

It’s not a mantra as much as a statistical fact.

Ridsdale took Leeds to the Champions League semis, he did that by ensuring he had the types of players that command higher salaries.

Tan took Cardiff to the Premier League, a club that is traditionally a lower league ‘also ran’. Do you think he would have done that without the accompanying salary and transfer budget?

You CAN of course become an exception and over-perform for a short period of time, but you will still be an exception.

It will never change the fact that salary and transfer budgets will be the biggest key predictor in success.

Reckon Wrexhams recent success has anything to do with the fact the have a league 1 budget? It was a matter of time before they were promoted.

It’s no coincidence their greatest times in recent memory have come in the years following some Hollywood superstars coming and spending their way out of the league.

I’m not sure why we are pretending otherwise here.

Indeed, but net spend is not a key contributor to success prediction.

Spend + squad value is always the best indicator, salary budgets tend to go hand in hand with those two prime movers.

I have proved (and subsequently demonstrated) that time and time again.

Happy to do so again if you wish.

Actually I’ll just link to the last time I did it (funnily enough by a thread started by the same old truth averting owner basher):

Who gave the go head to sign ayew on 80k a week?

Piroes value has gone up imo and if he stays and starts well next season his value will go up further.

Dimwits? You cheeky munchy bum ** your mate sold the club behind the fans back's and made some absolutely catastrophic signings which helped us go down and put us in a position we are in now.

He made some big mistakes in the relegation year for sure but would have survived but for Clement and some untimely injuries. He was back on form with Potter despite Potter's poor recruitment. Potter was using the Swansea academy developed by Jenkins and Morgan.

The club was not sold behind the the fans back. Everyone knew the club was up for sale and everyone knew the Trust shares were not up for sale. The board member said so very emphatically and none of the members said anything because they believed their duty was over one they had paid the £10 annual fee. They are now getting what they deserve. Economic obliteration from Inflation, dilution and legal costs.

The missing element in cash input v performance of course is the skill of the Manager who can raise the level of play above that expected from the players values.
They can also destroy the ability of the players to reach their potential of course.
Which is why there are managers who consistently get clubs promoted or out of relegation that are very sought after and also attract more investment.

A club, similar in size to us, PNE owner Craig Hemmings says

"The way that central media monies are paid creates massive challenges for those of us in the Championship trying to compete. It costs about £24 million pounds each year to keep us going. Towards this we receive approximately £2.3m from season tickets and a further £7.3m in total from the EFL and Premier League. After other income streams, that leaves my family with an annual shortfall of around £12m which we have to put into the club each season."

Wasn't it Carlos Cavalahal that got us relegated?

And the sale was behind the Trust's back as Jenkins signed the pre sale agreement on behalf of ALL shareholders in December 2015, and only told the Trust in March 2016, yes, everyone knew a sale was likely but keeping schtum for 4 months is my beef.

If you believe that salaries paid automatically equate to league position. If that was all there was to it clubs might as well just submit their accounts and let things be decided that way.

In terms of expense we're pretty much middle of the road. In terms of squad quality we really should have done better than we have, especially for one big chunk of the season.

I know the Premier League is different to the Championship but the principle is the same. squad value and wages does not automatically equate to success as you said.

If you have the highest wage bill in the league and spend the most money and have the most expensive squad and fail to top the league - then it’s a failure.

It’s a barometer for predicting success, not achieving it (nobody said it did either). To achieve it you have to have competency in the management to make the right decisions.

So if you have a top 6 budget, you should be coming top 6. To achieve that however, you need to make correct decisions in playing style and squad selection.

Squad value, salary budget and transfer spend has a correlation with league finish in every single league on the planet, it’s not even debatable.

Your links show that 7 of the top 10 are in the top 10 payers in the league.

Once you add in squad value and transfer spend that may increases further from 7, with the remaining 2-3 having particularly poor seasons of underperformance like Chelsea and Leicester will probably have seen some managerial changes as a result (both have).

Only West Ham are among the top 10 spenders who don’t reside in the top 10 and who haven’t sacked their manager as a result…

Surely this is obvious?

There is a very, very strong case to be made that Huw Jenkins is one of the primary reasons as to why there is so much delaying oversight in the way we do transfers now.

He remained in almost total control of the football side of the club even after the takeover, and look at the dogs breakfast he made of it. It's hardly a surprise that they've not been as trusting of a CEO since.

Trevor Birch was well respected, yes he left for pastures new, but Spurs is closer to him and they were PL, OK it was only second in command but still. He soon left Spurs for the number one position at the PL so it was always going to be hard to keep TB

I seriously question his judgement in approving or recommending the whole Swansea city team to parade themselves behind a BLM logo everyone kneeling and putting it on the Swansea city website.

He could of course have copped out and said "I leave it to the players". In the sharp suited world of cyber advertising and social media I expect my football club to be a wholes n lot sharper than that.

There is an element of truth in this to be honest. The US owners have been well and truly mugged over the last 7 season over transfers.

It did not matter who was manager or recruitment chief all have messed up too much. They own appointments though.

Potter wasted £7m on Celina, John, McKay and Asoro. (were the last 3 scouted at all?)

Cooper: Peterson and Bennett. How did the club let Goykeres slip away (sickener) .

Martin: Fisher and Darling (up to date) Both are slowly improving and could be assets.

Jenkins had a bad year but was back on track. I look at his reign holistically. Where he stated and where he finished. He deserves a stand named after him.

15-16 seasons 7 in the PL 3 promotions a cup win. Europe.

One bad season out of 15.

As for Jenkins, from 2002 to 2016 he had a team behind him from Don Keefe financial Director, Steve Penny HR and Legal Director as well as the maverick Morgan, in fact, a full board to kick back and make sure most decisions were sound. Once the new owners believed that everything he touched turned to gold, the wheels fell off.

That's a fair point, although for me the roots of the problem go further back to his clashes with Tutumlu. It's no secret that Huw's nose was put firmly out of joint by being essentially sidelined when it came to targeting players to move in and out. It's no secret that Monk was chosen as a replacement because he was expected to be more malleable, a decision which backfired spectacularly.

Once the Americans came in they did what Americans tend to do in these situations and hire an "expert" to run the club for them. Unfortunately they left the incumbent in place when maybe shaking things up a bit might have been the better move.

No doubt Tutimulu was a bully, a total shyster who IMO had something over the gentleman that is Michael Laudrup, Tutimulu wasn't was a talent spotter but brought in players that he could make money on, he became a multi-millionaire on the back of Swansea City.
When Michu became available, Laudrup wanted him, the only problem was, Michu had another agent, a lovely Spanish lady who was a sharp cookie, Tutimulu wanted the deal and tried to get Michu to change allegience, but Michu stuck with his long term agent, the only way that Michu came to Swansea was because Tutimulu backed down, he still got a finders fee, I think De Guzman was similar.

Better than Gylfi, Shelvey, Routledge, Leon, Ki, Ashley ? I don't think so. Or are we talking about post American ownership when the wheels came off?

Lets have a look at the squad for the cup final

G Tremmel, not Bayram
A Rangel, not Bayram
A Williams (c), not Bayram
S Ki, not Bayram
B Davies, not Bayram
N Dyer, not Bayram
L Britton, not Bayram
J de Guzmán, not Bayram but he tried to muscle in on the deal
W Routledge, not Bayram
P Hernández, Bayram
Michu, not Bayram but he tried to muscle in on the deal

M Vorm, not Bayram
R Lamah ? not sure
G Monk, not Bayram
I Shechter ? not sure
L Moore, not Bayram
D Tiendalli ? not sure
K Agustien ? not sure

OK, Chico was out injured who became pivotal but others were bit part
