| Cardiff Riots on 08:32 - May 31 by felixstowe_jack | Not sure what the met have to do with Cardiff but as you brought it up perhaps our bone idle civil servants, aka social services who paid to look after these people, could do their job properly and be on call 24 hours a day not 9 to 5 or working from home. |
There is always a Social Worker on duty or on call every local authority has to provide that service, but you are right lots of areas need to move to providing a greater service outside the hours of 9/5.

A while ago, Mrs CJ and I talked a guy down from jumping off the Llangyfelach bridge -0 we were just passing and stopped. While we were doing this, we phoned 999, the police eventually came and took him safely into their custody. The point is 999 was my only point of reference in an emergency. I wouldn't know how to contact social services or anyone else. At one point, I thought i may have had to physically restrain him from jumping and i wanted the police to come as backup. They may not be trained, but at least they are a first response

Between 2010 and 2021 social worker numbers were decimated by austerity while the population rose. It has become a hell of a hard job without being 24 7 Social workers have no option than work from home as cuts to local authorities have seen many offices sold off. WFH is cheaper.

You absolutely did the right thing in calling the police, my son encountered an identical situation last year and did the same thing as you. The police have said they’ll still attend threat to life calls, but not the other mental health calls they get saddled with, welfare checks, concern for safety when there’s not an apparent immediate risk to life etc. Many years ago there were large institutions where people who were unwell could be hospitalised, most of them have now closed or had their bed numbers slashed and replaced by care in the community which is the right thing, the problem is care in the community has never been funded properly. Previously, police cells were deemed to be a place of safety and officers exercise powers under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act, police cells are no longer considered appropriate places of safety and police use of S136 powers has been severely curtailed by legislation as people were languishing in police cells for days whilst MH services were trying to sort things out. Whatever people say, NHS funding is under massive pressure and the system is crumbling.

When I met my wife over 16 years ago, she used to be in HR for the NHS and she had to deal with a man, Dr Hassan, who was high up in the CAMHS at the time, he was saying back then that it was crumbling.

Clearly you did not read the coroners report nowhere did he mention they were running away from the law, being chased or even being followed. In fact the were found by members of the public minutes after they crashed their bike no sign of police until they responded to 999 call.

No, it was a statement and I forgot an apostrophe, some gaffe's get through. You should learn how to finish a sentence, period. See what I did there?

It looked like a question to me. It's a full stop not a period. That's an American term, you are not American. [Post edited 2 Jun 2023 9:49]

Helmets aren’t cool though. Imagine being 16 on a sink Cardiff estate wearing a crash helmet on a scooter . These kids ,like all, thought they were immortal. They and we are not Actions have consequences

Not only did you negotiate gaffe and the dreaded Grammar Police but you avoided the word gaff with which it is often confused . Apostrophes have it hard . It’ s not their fault .

A bit like you using the American word sulfur instead of sulphur the English word in a previous post.

I did work for an American chemical company. They have different terminology, so old habits I guess. I should have said H2S. For example, they would say Methyl Chloride and we would say Chloro Methane, or maybe the other way round. It’s been a few years since I retired, but it’s the same material
