We should be debating how we go forward not pining about bygone days because times likes these make us sentimental . Laudrup lost interest then went on to achieve not that much .
Just what happened in that final season under Laudrup still isn't clear to me, and I would have been fascinated to hear ML's version of events in the interview. My recollection is that somebody on the inside was sniping against ML with negative news leaks. Then were was tension between the agent and HJ, something brewing with that small group of senior professionals who weren't getting playing time, and most of all (I suspect) an unwillingness or inability of the board to support ML with a couple of key transfers that he wanted to take us to the next level. I don't think "lost interest" really captures what happened, because as far as I can see the Laudrup family liked our city and ML would have stayed under the right conditions. My guess is that ML gradually became disillusioned, but the more immediate cause of the sacking was the micro-politics within Swansea City AFC.

Swansea city recruitment team was in charge of player trading. SCFC signed Bony for example. He was probably not a Laudrup pick. Laudrup had his own recruitment team the Turkish man who reportedly had secured DeGuzman, Hernandez, Michu and Chico. Impressive work.
This is how Swansea have always worked. Some club picks and some manager picks. Swansea under Brendan chose Neil Taylor from memory and Brendan went for SInclair and Borini. Swansea have had problem when the manager did not reject their picks. For example Monk fresh out of playing could have rejected Tabanou and Eder. Clement would have done a good job if he had blocked Bony returning and Clucas. The club could have blocked Sanches. Guidolin did not block Borja but chose Llorente and admitted he did not know Fer. Mr G brought in Paloschi to add legs and energy.
I recall Laudrup reading on forums (speculation not fact) wanted complete control over all transfers and communication failures lead to friction such that Laudrup's transfer man was banned from the club after he was rumoured to be touting to sell Ashley Williams. The credibility of this is under question. This was possibly the main cause added to a string of bad results and flat performances.
The 1-0 defeat at Cardiff in November 2013 was the start of the downward turn. Which is incredible to think as 5 weeks earlier we had hammered Valencia 3-0 away.

That season we finished 12th. The season after 8th.
In the premier league.
A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.
Cardiff City lost in the FA cup final to Portsmouth in 2008 and lost to Liverpool 2-2 (3-2 on penalties. They are Welsh and to lose on penalties is pretty close to be fair to them.
Nothing for second place. They like to tell anyone who'll listen that they beat Real Madrid but for some reason don't mention the 2nd leg! It'll be the 100 year anniversary of their only cup win soon, we can look forward to a 3 part mini series on BBC Wales probably .

A while back I’d read about the Real Madrid game so I thought I’d have a look at the Spanish league table and Real finished, if I remember right, fourth or fifth. So obviously they were a good team but no Galacticos whatever those up the road suggest. Beating what was the champions league winners over two legs in a semi final was a far greater achievement and that’ll do for me.
Laudrups reign will always be viewed by some as a time of a Spanish influence generated in the dressing room , take Michu back tomorrow , debate again , the best since Latchford in a Swans strikers shirt , sorry LT10 .
Monk was the bees knees according to some as a good manager , that went pear shaped .
Martinez , Laudrup , Tosh and Brendon Rogers brought a new and original style to play . It was great to be different from the rest .
Now it mainly is a tried and tested bore fest , do not lose attitude taken by managers . Many Clubs realising they are on a lost cause next match , easier game next week follows .
Three promotions. And then our best ever league finish.
It’ll never be beaten and that therefore ranks Toshack as our greatest ever manager.
We did then get relegated when the club ran out of money in a season where attendances also plummeted.
Our season under Laudrup of course was memorable. Winning the league cup was undoubtedly a high point in the club history.
Getting a team relegated is a major stain on any managers resume there is nothing worse so then that has to cast serious doubts as to Toshack being our greatest manager.

It’s not a major stain on anything
The club couldn’t compete at that level any longer. Financially it simply wasn’t in that league.
Managers can be blamed partly or wholly for a team getting relegated but Tosh didn’t have the tools to work with. And the club couldn’t afford to go out and buy them. Coupled with the sudden drop off in local interest reflected in reduced attendances it was curtains.

I agree Tosh the greatest but we did have a fractured dressing room, which he would have been responsible for ? Had we stayed up though, we might have grown. There again, that could apply to the last relegation from the top flight .
Toshack has personal charisma ,Laudrup didn’t ,as a manager. Truly great player though

We would never have maintained the level under Tosh, lets just say the clubs finances were not in the right place and leave it there.
£45m for Sigurdson and £12m for Llorente. Lets assume a potential £50m budget for replacements. Neither would sign new deals.
I praise the former owners but the recruitment was geared to one or two players a season not 4 or 5. It was more successful with young prospects like James and McBurnie who were not ready. This was because the club had a core of top class professionals in their prime.
If the £50m was spent more carefully the Premier league era would have lasted longer. Gomis could clearly have been kept for a new manager to get the best out of. 1 in 4 is pretty good in the Premier league. 17 goals in 71. Maybe enough to keep the club in the top 17.
Monk is seen as the reason for the decline. I am tempted to think it was actually Clement who rubber stamped too many mistakes and spending that proved fatal. Would a manager Brendan brought have Bony back and signed Borja, Clucas Roque Mesa and Sanches?.

The last para is spot on. Football madness right there.

Stop the ifs and buts and stop making excuses, plenty of clubs with little resources can compete at a decent level especially with a class manager at the helm we got relegated with him at the helm end of.

Tosh already has a few shakey players but was obliged by finance to blood the kids. He was up for this and played them. Dudley Lewis Darren Gale, Jimmy Loveridge. Dudley built a career in the lower leagues but the other ended up in local football.
This was similar in some ways to Potter. But Potter was given £7m which he wasted but used Roberts, James McBurney and Byers from the academy. Three would be internationals bringing millions. Byers is still a Championship player just about.
