I’m 76 and drive almost every day, drive to the speed limits and regard myself as a safe driver. Go and park up in Belgrave Road Gorseinon and watch the young drivers who have come out of Gorseinon College. I’ll wager that you won’t see any over 75 year old driver being as reckless as these students. |

More compulsory training should and extra restriction should be made in the first year after passing the driving test.
Suggestions by road safety experts include
Compulsory P plates for a year
Compulsory " black box" being fitted by insurance companies
Compulsory lessons for night time driving
Compulsory attendance at speed awareness course including graphic crash scenes photos
Restriction on carrying passengers in first year.
Some of these could be funded by Welsh government if it is really concerned in reducing road deaths. |
To be fair, the Welsh Government subsidise the cost of the Pass Plus Course in Wales for drivers aged between 17 and 25 who’ve passed their driving test in the last 12 months. Instead of the normal price which is around £120 maybe more, but in Wales it costs £20. Attendance isn’t compulsory though.
I wouldn’t argue with most of the other points, but the black boxes are hit and miss as I know people who’ve had issues with the wrong info on the black box data bases. | | | |

I will hold my hand up and say I was a stupid driver when young, something I am not proud of. I would say monitoring by a "black box" for the first three years after you pass your test would be excellent and I am going to put this out there for all over 75s as well. No rear passengers for the first 12 months also. These would prevent more deaths and serious injuries than the 20 mph law. |
I too admit to being a stupid driver when young.
I'm all for these suggestions too. In fact I think the restricted BHP should be national as well as restricting the size of the vehicle itself. Too many people get into big, powerful vehicles that they just cannot handle.
I also think restrictions should apply until you are 25.
Mind you, I also think that anyone breaking the law by getting into a car when drunk or on illegal drugs, or on drugs that affect their driving, should face higher sentences if they have an accident and if they kill someone they should be carged with murder. Basically if you break the law and that leads to another crime, double the punishment. | | | |

In all seriousness, I now renew my driving licence every three years, I would be quite willing to have a medical check up every year to assess my driving suitability. The pressure the NHS is under I doubt that would be practicable. |  | | |

The whole driving test and period thereafter needs to be pulled apart. I agree with others about a black box, possibly engine size limits, harsher punishment for traffic offences, no passengers under 25 for until 25 themselves, curfews for under 25s.
I’m a great believer that road safety should be part of the school curriculum with shock photos and videos as part of the syllabus.
For over 75s there should be a test maybe every three years. Not the same as your first test but one that identifies whether there are lapses in concentration, response times, eyesight etc. I’m sure there are a plethora of psychological tests that can be adapted to be able to ascertain a drivers’ ability.
Let’s not forget that going too slow on roads can be as dangerous as going too fast so older people need to demonstrate they can keep up with the limits of the road. A bit easier now of course😉. |  |

My youngest is 20 and drives a small compact car (Aygo,C1, Pug 107) insurance policy in their own name (as part of our multi policy ) 3 years no claims discount and it now costs over £1100 a year without the black box.
If the car was fitted with a black box it would cost about £150 less. Having listened to a couple of people in work who have cars fitted with telematics for insurance purposes , it’s a nightmare. The smallest of errors can result in demerits and a couple have had huge problems with IT systems having the incorrect speed limits on roads. That said, I totally get there’s an issue with boy and girl racers so to get around that I’d put restrictions on the type of car drivers could drive.
