Jesus That comment by Shankly is arguably the most stupid quote of all sporting time

They constantly remind us that they’re not football people. |
If he’d have played for the Swans then his new club (assuming that wasn’t Plymouth) wouldn’t have been able to play him until due to the 2 club rule.

Decision was made way above his pay grade However you keep blaming Martin for all the football sins of the world. IMHO Martin is proving his ability now at Southampton. Some will never acknowledge it though |
martin has a better squad at Southampton than he had here. As long as he has the players he can get a tune but when the players aren't capable he doesn't get that tune, that's poor management in my book, you play to your squads strengths. You wouldn't enter a stock car into an F1 race. You use what you've got appropriately and when he did we won games. he cost us a shot at promotion in my book. Now we have weaker team and had to sack another manager which cost the club more money.

Hence the reason Martin was told not to play him.

It is part of the manager job to get disaffected players performing. No one is suggesting MW hated the fans or the club. The owners possibly for bringing him back. it is probable his issue was with Martin not Duff. If MW thinks his place is in the Premier league then there was no need to go to PAFC. Most players come round when faced with logic and their circumstances. Duff did not like him sufficiently to go out of his way and persuade the player to knuckle down at Swansea and earn a move. Duff was happy enough to replace MW with Yates. 'Damage was done' with Patterson but he is now back in the groove.

If his issue was just with Martin, there would be no reason to demand to leave on Duffs first day. The owners that forced him to come back from a loan spell, where he was doing really well, to a manager who had sent him there in the first place and didn’t want him back were still here however… Going to Plymouth looks like it is may well get him to the PL. I’ve criticised Duff as much as anyone, but we all know where the blame lies here. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
