New version for new season as Sheff Wed enter transfer embargo...

Old thread here...

Rest of the Championship thread by Hunterhoop 10 Aug 2024 11:07
Toyed with this idea last season. Shall we have a thread to discuss, comment on, cover the rest of the league? A place to discuss other teams’ results, performances, financial implosions, etc?

For example, last night, anyone catch either of the first two games? I didn’t. But somewhat surprised/worried Blackburn scored 4 given how they are meant to struggle. Was it Derby being utter sh*te?

Sounds like Preston are continuing in the same vein of being incredibly dull.

Clive, what do you think? Worth making a sticky? Might reduce the number of threads to manage.

The ninth time this season Charlton have kept a clean sheet when winning a game.

They took their time about it, but Stoke being sht again is very reassuring.

Why do you think Bennie is picked ahead of Kolli, for example? Kolli is clearly the better player.

I think HunterHoop post above yours says it all.

Good result for us tonight in the never-ending battle to accidentally finish sixth.

Charlton will keep grinding points out and be well clear of trouble.

I guess that means we’ll have to go back again next season then?I bet they’ll reduce our allocation rather than deal with their access problems.

Is he though ?
hes now 21 been in and around the first team for what 3 seasons now and still hasnt cemented a starting place unless we are desperate for strikers . soon as they come back even half fit hes back to the bench , cant always be the coahs fualt why hes not a reg starter , hes got skill no doubt , he hasnt got work rate though , which these days in most teams is more important to some coaches.

bennie offers more in the air for his lack of skill he works harder as well. id be amazed is kollie is still here next season to be honest .

These calls to play Smyth on the right wing are just weird. Before, a lot of people on here were banging on about how his goals at Leyton Orient came about due to him playing on the left.
Maybe L1 was his level?

I would, though, get Kolli in and start on the left against Blackburn.

smyths more effective to the team on the right , yeah prob for goalscoring league one was his level but at championship level as a right winger , supply line he the best we have, would you fancy being a left back and having him go at you ?

If we’re playing Edwards at RB and Norrington-D at LB it makes even more sense to have Smyth on the right IMO. Edwards is happier not getting involved in the attacks as much and RND overlaps so my uneducated brain tells me it makes more sense to have your inverted winger on the left and your kick n rush, beat the full-back, chalk on his boots, get it in the mixer winger on the right.

Even if Mbengue comes back in this still seems logical to me given Mbengue’s crossing is generally horrendous. But what do I know?

If you're saying that Kolli is deficient defensively by referencing the WBA game from the start of 24/25 season, in which he provided an assist for Andersen, which I disagree with, you have to acknowledge the inability of Bennie to stick to his basic assignment of marking Eccles. He wasn't even blocked or impeded by any Coventry player. His peripheral and general awareness of the basic run made Eccles was awful. That's alongside the panicked clearance v Wrexham.

He was the one against Charlton who miscontrolled a poor cross-field pass by a Charlton player, so badly, it ended going back to a Charlton player. I'm personally not sure what he does as he hardly shows for the ball, yet he has played far more minutes than Kolli since Stoke City. The same team at Loftus Road when Kolli came on in the second-half and played on the right and was diligent in his defensive duties.

It wouldn't surprise me if Kolli in the paltry 13 minutes' playing time he had in that game, touched the ball on more occasions than Bennie who would have been on the pitch for over 30 minutes, as Kolli demanded that the ball be passed to him and always showed for the ball with real conviction.

That first paragraph is a really fair point! Maybe my perception of their relative defensive strengths is unfounded.

I think I'd stand by my argument that Bennie is a more natural like for like when it is a winger being subbed off and I'd guess that is the biggest factor in the decision over anything else. If it was Vale being subbed off - I'm sure Kolli would be coming on.

There's also the, much discussed on here, factor that the inconsistency of our attacking players makes it tricky for the management team. Bennie has a good second half (Coventry goal side) at home, so probably logical sub next match for Saito but then follows it up with an anonymous half hour against Charlton. Kolli plays really well against West Ham, then poor for 90 mins against Stoke.

Michael O’Neil to Blackburn it seems doing the job alongside the Northern Ireland job. For tomorrow I’d rather they had the bloke covering but I’d not be happy in their position getting a guy in who for the first few games at least can’t be entirely focussed on the job.

I read somewhere that Kolli's goal involvement stats are more impressive than Eze's were at similar ages. I don't really understand why we're so shy in deploying him more often for his further development. After all, it rarely happens that we have a player with his potential coming through the ranks.

Can't help feeling it's due to internal politics with him/his dad and Williams/Nourry...

Kolli should definitely be getting more minutes ahead of Bennie.

I got 4 downvotes for suggesting just that

I think Bennie offers far more and he will score eventually and be a regular starter soon

Looked far more potent against Charlton once he came on. Ditto when he came on against Sheffield Wednesday. There's clearly something going on behind the scenes as he should be getting more minutes when we have so many players out.

July ‘21 makes him joint-sixth. Harrogate’s manager has been there since 2009 and I doubt 1% of football fans could name him. I couldn’t until I just looked it up. Saying that, they’re crap.

Surely no manager or coach will ever beat Guy Roux. Three spells in charge of Auxerre, including - wait for it - a second term which lasted 36 years .

A trifling 1747 games with Auxerre in all, with a win rate of over 46%. Wowsers!

It should be. Feel like what he’s being asked to do is over-complicated. Stick him on the right. Tell him to run forwards with the ball when he has it and run backwards when we don’t have it. Simple but effective when he’s asked to do a couple of jobs well rather than lots of things that aren’t his forte.

I agree.

The normal logic for playing inverted wingers is that they're closer to central midfield so they can help out when we lose the ball.

I can only guess that we do the same so the two inverted wingers can help out our two, not because they're actually better inverting?

Defeat today means Sheffield Wednesday can now be relegated away against Sheffield United.

Would be a cruel end to a very cruel season for them.
