This is unprecedented. The BBC panel is talking about the sheer absurdity of being able to dissect the budget before the speech is made. The OBR report was somehow released online early. You couldn't make this up....

Edit. OBR acknowledges that it made a mistake by releasing its online report of the impact of the budget before Reeves has made her statement in the HoC .

It's just an omnishambles really isn't it? As bad as things were under Johnson and Sunak they never sank to this level of basic incompetence.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

I noticed that she had a bollocking from the speaker before the budget for all the leaks and press briefings.

What a performance from Badenoch. First class savagery 👏

As for the increase tax on landlords, have they not thought this out. I am a landlord and I do it for income not for the fun of it, believe me there is NO fun in it. Therefore my rents will increase next year to take account of this. As will other landlords hence driving the market price upwards.

The real danger is that landlords will say “Sod this” and get out. I’m thinking about it but I have to weigh up a load of things. If I could get income from investment even slightly less than I do now from rental incomeI’d take it because the hassle of being a landlord is no fun.

It’s been populist as well. Everyone hates landlords, let’s tax them and get public approval!

I pondered the idea of renting my house out when eventually Mrs Winston and I get a place together, but the hassle that goes with potentially a 7-8% return compared to a hassle free 4-5% return via an investment account is a no brainer.

Public perception of landlords is of the old Rachmann type of the 50s and 60s.

It’s no roller coaster, easy money scheme. But people think otherwise so we are easy targets. However, people leaving the rental ‘profession’ will cause the government and society a whole load of problems.

I believe in Rngland that they are introducing legislation preventing landlords evicting tenants in order to sell their property. What incentive is there to go into it if it’s forever making the job more onerous?

I'm a landlord too. Income tax, insurance and a landlords licence every 5 years. 20% tax relier on any repairs id not exactly a hardship.it can be hassle doing your self assessment, but hardly the bad deal many describe. Better than working for a living

I think you can evict a tenant to sell the property in England, you can't re let the property after such an eviction. The new legislation does not help landlords with a bad tenant, I think a number of rentals will be disposed of early next year in England.

It was something I misheard possibly. If I am right it will prevent many becoming Landlords and with the dearth in rental property across the UK that will cause issues.

My dads family had a building business and my grandad had several properties when it wasn’t “ fashionable”
My dad too was a landlord for a short time
I’m
The first sibling to not although twenty yrs ago I was very close to buying a house at auction for cash and “ doing it up”
I prevaricated and spoke to a fella on our squash team who took me by the throat and told me it was too much of a pain unless you do the work yourself
I have no building skills as ( get this)I was seen as the “ clever one” of the family and going on the tools was beaten out of me whilst at school
I’ve always wished I had

I’m not direct would fancy it now due to the shits that wreck properties like my sons chums did on Headingley whilst “studying”for a degree

It’s fine when everything is going ok. It’s seldom like that though.

Re the security aspect, I was disturbed by the transcript of Steve Witkoff's telephone call in which he coached a Putin aide about how best to talk to Trump about the peace deal (leaked to Bloomberg). It seems clear that Witkoff's sympathies are entirely with Russia. Can we assume that Five Eyes intelligence sharing that Witkoff sees will not be passed on?

I too am a landlord albeit accidentally. I totally get that some landlords are unscrupulous and that they let out substandard properties that aren’t fit for habitation and there are some pretty poor tenants who have no regard for other peoples property. On the other hand, there are good landlords and good tenants, so striking an effective balance is important.

I personally would have allowed the continuation of Section 21 notices, but ensured that tenants had a long notice period so they could make alternative arrangements. In cases where a Section 8 notices is enquired ( including rent arrears, damage to the property, breach of contract, or anti-social behaviour) these matters should be expedited, however the lack of time at the County Court can result in lengthy delays which can cost the landlord a fortune.

If landlords continue to bail out in large numbers, it’s going to mean less rental opportunities, higher costs and an adverse impact on social mobility for jobs etc.
