My son spoke to a recruitment consultant yesterday who works for one of the big UK consultancies. She said that the number of vacancies she is being asked to source for has plummeted to the levels seen in COVID.
A couple of conversations I've had with someone looking for a job and a guy that employs around 80 people back this up, finding a graduate job in the North East of England is very difficult. People are sticking with their jobs in South Wales, the employer has seem staff turnover almost stop in the last three months, he is using overtime a lot more to cover additional demand rather than take people on. The staff profile in his business means his NI bill has doubled in the last year.
With higher employment taxes, increases in business rates, increases in IHT for family businesses, the tightening of employee rights and the possible use of of AI, employers are going to think very carefully about hiring.

If they want to do a job sitting behind a computer then most of those jobs are going to go in the near future a lot of people think because of AI, AI might even take teachers and doctors jobs down the line.

Its just confirming what anyone with an ounce if business sense could see. Squeeze employers and what would you expect to happen, the government has to look at the bigger picture and plan long term. But I think they have accepted that they only have this term and don't care long term as long as their fingers don't get caught in the till. | | | |

Not only are our youngsters being squeezed out of employment by higher costs, but also by migrant workers willing to do the part time/lower paid work that was traditionally a way to earn a bit of coin or make a start in a career. All this has been very obviously coming for a long, long time.
You've also got cratering birthrates amongst UK citizens because they can barely afford to keep themselves. Can't afford to buy a house, rent is rocketing, yet still more people pour in through the door driving up demand. |  |

I caught some of the interview on breakfast to this morning. I don’t know much about Alan Milburn, but he came across well.
One of the points he made was that this was an issue which had been building for a long time, over numerous decades and encompasses things like housing costs, education, training costs to employers etc.
We need a complete rethink. The benefits system needs to change, it should only provide time limited support which allows for people to retrain, re-skill, get educated etc so that they can find work. If they can’t find work after day 18 months then their benefits end. Those who are very unwell and can’t work get supported, those who can work should work.
We have migrants coming in to the country (both legally and illegally) and quite a few manage to earn some decent coin doing deliveries and just eats, why aren’t our youngsters doing it? Around where I live there are lots of old people and they’re all looking for people to cut their lawns etc etc. We’re also crying out for carers, plenty of work there.
I know of a large company who employ north of a thousand employees and most of them are from abroad - they can’t attract enough British workers so have to look overseas. The jobs are full time including shifts and there’s piles of OT available, but Brits don’t want to work there!

The difficulty with the whole "find work within x amount of time or the benefits stop" thing, which I like aspects of, is that some people through no fault of their own are unemployable. The weird. The stupid. The just not up to it. These people exist, and in large numbers.
Plenty of people have made themselves unemployable over the years and they should be targeted by measures like this, but differentiating between the two types will be tricky.
Personally I'd prefer some sort of Workfare arrangement. Do some menial task in return for benefits. The former group will happily go along with the idea, the latter will do their level best to avoid it. | |
