Sadly, as was highlighted in the West Ham thread a few weeks ago, supporters are their own worst enemy with drugs being so openly used at games. If more people called it out as inappropriate there would not be the requirement to do these needless searches.
TBF, many years ago we didnt need the searches then, its only been higher in more recent times.
And to be clear Cate, I am aware it may be the minority but the majority need to report it so as it ceases to be an issue. |
I’ve never been a drug user,but I can’t imagine that a small amount of any drug could be found by stewards conducting a search in the dark with hundreds of people trying to rush past them to get to see some football taking place.My brother walked in with his rucksack on his back without them even noticing it,let alone searching it.
The only time I did dabble in partaking in cannabis,I ended up in hospital sleeping it off after waving at people in corridors.Whenever I see a certain episode of the Inbetweeners it takes me right back to the day I was taken away by ambulance.

We were quite lucky getting in as just after we got there they put up a cordon blocking everyone getting up to the entrance for some reason. I was searched by a steward before the turnstiles who then insisted on going through all the compartments in my wallet. I told him I thought it was a bit ott and that I’ve been to loads of away games and never had that done before. He said I could talk to the police if I wanted and that people were taking drugs. I said lucky them! Got past him and another one tried to search me! Seemed to me like they were all under a lot of pressure, police and stewards. [Post edited 7 Feb 10:51]

Train delays/cancellations didn't help, but being stopped in a narrow entranceway with no explanation before being funneled through 50% manned turnstiles felt completely irresponsible. Once I got through a bloke searched me and made me pull out my card wallet and went through it looking for 'contraband'. I told him I'd feel more compliant if I hadn't just gone through shit just to try and get in...
(Also not for nothing, but if they were serious about contraband they'd just pop into the gents at half time rather than adding to the aggravation of me trying to make kick off)
To top it off I got a £27 TFL charge for not being able to tap in or out of Charlton station. Not a strong recommend for a Friday night that one. |  |

What was it like getting out of there ? Stomached 10 mins outside Charlton station then decided to walk to North Greenwich ! Long fking walk !!!
Navigate to London Bridge then onto Euston and delayed again cos our transport system is in place but fking useless!!
Not home yet and still on the train now, would be easier to get home from Sheffield or somewhere!! |
Walking to North Greenwich is pretty much the only option if you don't want to wait for a train or bus from Charlton. It's estimated at about 40 minutes walk in Google maps.
You can save yourself about half the walk if you walk to IKEA Greenwich on the Millennium Leisure Park, off Bugsby's Way/Partree Way. Some of the buses for North Greenwich that stop there come from Greenwich so shouldn't be packed with fans coming from Charlton. |  |

That was what I did last night,although my train wasn’t until 23.37 from Stratford so I had plenty of time for a stroll.
I saw an earlier post that said that the 11pm was ok to catch.Imagine waiting for over an hour to get a train back to civilisation?We have similar crowds to theirs last night,but you have a choice of 4 tube stations close to our ground that we can use.
Maybe if they had a local pub for away fans it might make the travel to their ground easier than having to drink miles away and rely on the trains to get fans there? | | | |

If for example you were arrested for whatever and being signed In at a Police station then they would have the right to go through your wallet, but a Steward at a football match, no way surely unless I'm completely wrong, I've been 'frisked' a few times at away games but never been asked to hand over my wallet. |  |

Searching is limited to external clothing, pat-downs, xray electronic wands, etc. They are not allowed to search a wallet, and it is likely illegal under the Theft Act | |

We left London Bridge at half six, was utter chaos, a crush at the gate, only 3 turnstiles open and we missed the first 10 minutes oif the game. Never had that much trouble getting into a ground before, it was dangerous with no help from stewards or police who just stood laughing.
Going home was just as bad, got to the station and they shut the gates due to overcrowding on platform, which is understandable, then watched a train pull in with 3 empty carriages and when we all suggested maybe open the gates and fill this train we were again laughed at by staff and police and watched that train leave before we were herded onto the platform and squashed onto the next train 15 mins later. Absolutely brain dead from all involved. |  | | |

The tickets for collection office was mid-queue so you had a massive queue being partly funnelled around it.
I love any ground that isn’t a cheaply built bowl next to a Harvester but they must have had these issues countless times in the Prem days and plenty of sold out away ends since. There’s no way they haven’t purposely had so few turnstiles operating. Hardly beyond the wit of man to send someone down to one of the closed ones for half an hour to help the flow especially when the stands either side were so sparse. | | | |
