To be fair to Nathan Jones he thought the ref showed common sense not sending Vale off as there was no intent.
I would be interested to see how many away London derbies we have won since 2000. They say life is short and 19 years without an away win at Charlton is a significant proportion of my life. We have an excuse struggling at established Premiership London clubs like Arsenal and those who have risen like Palace, Brentford and Fulham but to not win at Charlton who have struggled is not a good look. You realise how quickly life passes when you analyse the last time your team won at a certain ground... |  | | |

Great report but seems like a wasted chance to continue our momentum after Coventry.Why would JS and his staff put together that so called game plan when this same 11 players completly outplayed Wrexham and Coventry in the last 2 games.
Just start like its a home game and see if we can pull ahead and win .

My own feeling, watching back the highlights, and even though we had two or three decent late chances, is we were a bit fortunate not to lose. Walsh - and, by default, 'Lyndon the Bruce' - earned us that 0. It was the best of three goalless draws on the road, sure, but you wouldn't be writing home about any of them. |  |

Minor, minor, minor point…the 1987 away win was at Selhurst Park when Charlton were in exile, so our record at The Valley is even worse. I only remember because I was there and Dean Coney scored. whooosh.
Lennie Lawrence had got them promoted playing in front of crowds of 3,500. He was the unlikeliest looking miracle worker, but what he achieved was phenomenal. [Post edited 8 Feb 23:23]

After a quick check of results since 2000-01 we have won a grand total of 8 London derby away games in almost 26 seasons.That total jumps to 12 if you count Watford as a derby.
Palace and Millwall twice,Brentford,Charlton,chelshite and Fulham once each.

They thought that the plan was to get behind them quickly on the break, and that it could work.
Except....
Saito is awful at the moment, totally bereft of confidence. When was the last time he went wide and fronted his man? But he'll be back.
Smyth had the beating of his man,but it's what he did after that. Vale was anonymous. The only mark he left on the game was on coady's head.
The support didn't get up quickly enough.
We struggle against physical teams.
But we finished a match looking the fitter team, which was a first. | |

Shame about Saito - not sure what's going on with him but feels like another classic QPR, great loan signing who turns crap when signed permanently.

Thanks for doing this research at least it proves I am not getting senile yet as it confirms my worst suspicions that we are spineless in away London derbies.
I think the away win at Chelsea was the only away derby success in three Premier League seasons which included 6-0 and 6-1 derby hidings when we allegedly had better players than we have now.
The problem for us doing badly at Brentford and Fulham was that Brentford were on the rise and Fulham kept going up and down with parachute payments while we were in decline.
It is difficult to fathom why we have not managed a win at Charlton in the last 7 attempts as they have been stuck in the mud rather like us. Didn't they knock us out of the League cup as a league 1 side in a penalty shoot out following on from us losing there in the season they were relegated from the Championship? I try to forget about nightmares like this so memory a bit sketchy.
Perhaps it is just as well we are not in the Premiership. Fourteen derbies would be enough to relegate us as we won't pick up many points in those fixtures. | | | |
