Key issues to address ahead of next season 12:03 - Mar 23 with 5184 viewsstreetlyjack

With the season now looking like its going to finish with a whimper I wonder and hope if Matos and the coaching team are carrying out a full autopsy on how we can move forward next season as a competitive team both home and away to avoid another stale campaign.

For me the following key points are critical to address if we are to challenge up at the top or even reach the new extended format of the play offs (this should be our minimum aim).

1) Our Playing style - now seems to be outdated even in the championship, far too slow, easy to work out and vulnerable to a counter attack as well as set pieces.

2) Shape & Balance - a midfield core based around Ronald, Eom and Franco just doesn't work - no physical strength, little creativity and no end product. I struggle to work out what our approach is as we are neither solid in defending or creative enough in attack...the quality unfortunately just isn't there so this dynamic has to change next season. This team needs a serious injection of pace or we will continue to be stuck in our 'sideways and backwards' cycle. To have opposition managers comment that they are 'happy to let you have the ball as you never do anything with it' is damning.

3) Loan Strategy - Our loan strategy just hasn't delivered this season with very little contribution coming from our loan players when you think about it. I do appreciate a change of manager will not have helped here as these were not Matos picks. If you look at other teams at the top this season you can see their loan players are contributing to their success. Bringing players in on loan as back up is fine only if your starting 11 has good quality - unfortunately we dont have this luxury so need a rethink on who we loan in next season as they really need to be adding value to the starting 11 and not just as back up.

4) Recruitment - I wont name anyone in particular but its clear to everyone that we need to ship a few out this summer who are just not good enough to take us forward - better to take a loss now rather than keep them on the books, they have had long enough to prove themselves so lets just call it quits and move on. If we are to sell our key assets for £25m+ then this gives us a great opportunity to reset and build a more functional team for next season.

5) Leadership - Cabango is not the answer and does not come across as a leader of men or someone that can drag his team up by the scruff of the shirt when things get tough, he in fact tends to be one of the main culprits for making poor decisions which cant fill his teammates with much confidence.

Matos should now have seen everything he needs to see from this squad to give him absolute clarity on what and where the improvements can be made for next season. We cant afford to let another season drift like this one especially now with the introduction of the new play offs format.

I am definitely keeping the faith but Matos and the board need to rectify some of the mistakes we have made this season which wont be easy but MUST be addressed.

Excellent synopsis of the issues needing addressing. I’m sure we all know the names you have in mind.

And Cabango just does not lead full stop never mind by example. How you demote someone without crushing them I don’t know but maybe he should be one of the names in your point 4? He’d be in mine sad to say.

I would suggest the majority feel absolutely as you do
We have and are recruiting pkayersxshonarexsompmy not physical enough for this league
That is not to suggest hoofball but fact
EOM Ronald ate pitifully weak with added issue of the ladders diving and acting like a clown
Quite why he starts should bother us all
EOM flatters but his end result is zero
He looks lost in every game

We have the worst defending full backs in the league and have for a while
Keys less putrid games has seen him almost deified when he should have been offloaded two seasons ago

With a few exceptions our recruitment has been woeful and we have accumulated dead wood yet we offer a player an extended deal just to sit on the bench for two more years

Madness

Our style is to create chances then screw up unless VIP gets the ball
We then give simple goals away by not doing the basics
We do not have an inspirational captain
A great lad but not a leader

Our loans are bizarre Get them in then not play them Why? It’s pointless playing them
Now as they’ll be going back to their clubs this summer

I thought Matos would go on to be a great coach but not sure as of now but at least we are free of Sheehan and Williams whose “ style” was painful and fan losing

We can do so much better

I'd start Walta and Widdel in every game if fit now to get them accustomed ready to hit the ground running next season, give some minutes to a few U21's who are on the brink of first team squad. Experiment a bit with shape, try 3 atb, try a diamond mid with Idah and Vip up top together.

Widdell has real talent but possibly tries too hard
Walta …we hope

A midfield of Stamenic Galbraith Franco should be effective

I would go one further and employ Widell ahead of them in what people call a ten role. He has the energy to last ninety minutes at full pace and would create for Vipotnik. Those three behind him in a midfield three, one winger and the usual at the back.

A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.

Great post by Streetly Jack. I think we have flattered to deceive at the back this season . I have never been really confident in our centre backs ' ability on the ball and passing accuracy. To me in the championship this is a must . Good defences are built on a solid foundation of a good partnership and understanding between the centre backs. As the season has gone on I thought things would improve but sadly Iam afraid they have stayed the same . Good athletic ball playing centre halves are at a premium but they must be out there somewhere it's up to us to find them.
All the great successful teams had a solid base from which to build and inspire confidence in their team whether that be Adams and Keown at Arsenal or Hansen and Lawrenson at Liverpool. Without that solid base Iam afraid we will be wasting our time in even thinking about the top 6 next season.
Lincoln have averaged 0.38 goals against in their last 8 matches !! That's just over 1 goal conceded every 3 games !!

We need two fullbacks who can mark and defend properly , we need at least one more but probably two centre halves ,who are comfortable with the ball at their feet to play alongside and provide backup for the ones we have ,who can win Ariel balls ,also a dog in the middle of the park to provide a bit of steel and win the ball ,and a right winger who can beat a man and cross the ball ,oh ,and a keeper who commands his box and is good in the air and good at cutting out crosses in the six yard box would be nice too

I think we ok for the rest …….as long as we stop faffing about at the back and start playing the ball forwards with pace and purpose more often

That should do it 🤷‍♂️

We have too many “schoolboy” footballers.
Weak, pushovers.
You can have maybe one or two, but not half a team of them.

Starting from the back.
Vig is a great shot stopper. But doesn’t leave his goal line on crosses or corners..
why isn’t Margetsson coaching him to step a few yards out to catch or punch?

I think one of the biggest underlying issues we have s a club at the moment is trying to play the 'Swansea way', it feels like a noose that we are using to strangle ourselves. We have had a succession of managers attempting to put their own spin on things which has manifested itself in years of this stale football (this IMO has been the key driver in our attendances dropping).

The 'Swansea Way' was a thing of beauty when in full flow and had many admirers throughout the game, all things come to an end however and I feel we have to move on and build a balanced team that can graft, compete, create and defend for their lives when needed. This is what success looks like in today's championship, keeping possession, playing from the back and inviting the press is not the way forward and I hope Matos and the coaching team can see this as it's clear as day.

Time to develop a new shape & system if we are ever to get out of this league, this requires a new spine down the middle and a few strong characters.

We need to lay the ghost of the 'Swansea Way' to rest and build a clear plan focussed only on the future with no reference to the past.

Vigouroux has two main faults, coming for crosses and distribution. Possibly Margetson tries to coach him in these area's but its not in Vigouroux to improve. Any manager worth their salt know to cross the ball in the channel between the defence and keeper and we are in trouble. IMO its the reason we look like conceding so many own goals the defence have to play the ball facing the goal because Vigouroux didn't come, how often do we concede at the back post. His distribution is also very poor its never s quick long throw, its either a safe short pass or a long boot up the middle, when he kicks to the wide players more often than not it goes into touch. Im sure if Vigouroux had it in him to improve in these areas Margetson would have done it. Its the reason Vigouroux is in the Championship not the Premier League, saying all that he probably is the best shot stopper in the Championship, he didn't miss Coventrys penalty by much.

Agree the Swansea way was of a time and is not relevant now. At times we play quick passing football and a very high press, this needs to be the next Swansea way, but we need skilful athletes to carry it off.

It all just feels a bit like - 'The king is dead, long live the King'

The people who built the framework for the Swansea Way are now long gone but we still seem to be trying to replicate it using possession as the foundation, add in a dose of Pep Guardiola style tactics and the end result is a one dimensional style that in the main is quite boring to watch IMO.

The ashes from the Swansea Way should be ceremoniously thanked for their service and scattered across Swansea bay for all to enjoy and remember.

It's time to move on and adapt more to the modern game, we can still create a new identity but it has to be something different to this.

Football develops as the years go on, and old fashion single centre half was used to counter the old fashion centre forward, sweepers were deployed when teams went to two up top, tactics cannot be set in stone they have to be adaptable to each game and changed to suit the situations we find ourselves in, be it ahead or behind and with five subs we have to be more adaptable than ever.
We have seen that variations of one style can stand us in good stead typical seen at home which does not work away from home.
How many of us like to see us keep players up the park at our defensive corners it might actually leave space for our Goalie to come and claim the high balls more often killing any threat and make the break away a more viable options especially if we are behind in games.
We need to play to our strengths not the oppositions it does seem as if we make it easy for opposition teams. Football has always been about moving the ball quickly to catch the opposition out while ensuring good defensive structure. Is there such a thing as the Swansea way or just the realisation that getting the ball quickly under control and on the floor results in better options to players on the ball to take advantage of our strength and realise other teams weaknesses.

This is now a great thread
It shows people care and are not stupid
Playing as we are is stupidity
We end to end this crap and Matos should do it
I agree with Vig positioning but his defenders are often putrid
No excuse for putting foot on ball though before booting it straight into touch

I'd be happy to see a quick throw in or two down the line into space before the defence gets settled we often resort to backward ball that either relieve pressure on teams or a long aimless ball forward that is easier defended against.

It is almost as if players learnt different ideas from Matos and are still learning but does Matos have to reinforce the original outlines to the style of play both in the press and defensive structure, all very well creating more chances but not at the expense of a weaker defence, loss of players to injury hasn't helped, certain players have improved but some have slipped back into old habits.

Agree with all those points and the old habits seem to be far more evident in away games where we seem to be far more cautious and revert back to our default position of sideways and backwards.

Derby, Preston, Wrexham & Ipswich away are prime examples of the old approach of hogging possession without any purpose. The first half away at Portsmouth however we were far more pro active and got our rewards. I cant honestly think that Matos would send out a team to invite pressure and be so conservative away from home so can only assume some players are just programmed that way and find it difficult to adapt?

I think we could do with a couple or three seasoned championship players, who have championship qualities if that makes sense, yes we have players here who are seasoned championship players, but there's difference as I think its clear that they haven't the quality that's needed, Tymon, Galbraith, Vipotnik and probably Vigouroux and a few with promise, but I think we're still a little short in area's, at the back especially at 6 and probably 10.
