Possibly he has told the club, but there is no way the club would match what is available elsewhere or should we. The £1M signing on fee we paid Vipotnik to sign a new contract is dwafed by what Galbraith will get elsewhere as a signingon fee. Remember we instigated new contract talks when there were over 3 years left on the deal, not Galbraith asking for more money. The simple fact is it was poor management on our part to put in such a small buyout. I don't buy we wouldn't have known how he would turn out, he is an ex Manchester United product who had a good loan at Salford and was signed by Orient and last season was League One player of the season, we should have covered ourselves. |
Does a club have to put in a buyout clause? I know it's fairly commonplace but if it's not required then maybe not putting one in a contract would be a better choice. I thought I read somewhere that a buyout clause may be required now but I could be wrong.
Maybe a sliding scale would work well. If you play a minimum of "x" number of minutes, then your buyout clause amount increases to "y" amount. Obviously, the more minutes you play, the more valuable you are to the club.
I don't want to provide an excuse for the club not putting a higher amount in for him, but how does a team really know what value a recruit will eventually pan out to be? Also, it makes sense if management offers a relatively low wage, for example £5000/wk and a lower buyout clause amount since if the buyout amount was higher, then as a player I would say that my wage should be higher. | | | |

It could be that Galbraiths negotiation team were more highly skilled and experienced than the clubs and the reason he wanted to sign for us was the low buyout in the contract. Who knows, but there is a reason he wanted to sign for us against all the competition. With hindsight it wasn't because he bought into the dream. |  | | |
