When you consider that democratic socialism is an ideal that brought the people together when the Labour party grew so rapidly to get workers rights - there is very little thought that 100 years later that would include "illegals" squeezing the communities that were built by those workers. |  |

It seems to me that path dependency is relevant here - i.e. how we got to that situation. Elements in the story include a government preference for importing skills over training our own people, the attraction of cheap labour, and a willingness to expand social welfare spending to smooth those policies. Then there are socially liberal "equity" policies that do not give White working class boys the same degree of priority as ethnic minorities. Without mass immigration (the 15 to 18 million arrivals since 2000) I don't think we would be in the same situation with disadvantaged White kids. The FCDO currently maintains a list of countries where it recommends British people do not travel at all due to the dangers. This list includes Afghanistan, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Libya.
