The first time I saw him on telly he played a creepy poisoner named Doctor Bickley and he was really very good in it. I've certainly never forgotten it and it has to be about 40 years ago.

Sorry to hear that. A very underrrated actor. Up there with the very best imho. I remember him turning up as an gangster in Eastenders once. Played a nasty, creepy character that outshone all the other regulars on there.

My old flatmate was from Ammanford and friendly with Hywel's brother (Alun Lewis - also an actor). Went out on the piss with them a few times - Hywel was the proverbial "hell of a boy"....
