Well done to the people of Carmarthen

Monument to Waterloo hero will STAND: Memorial to slaver Thomas Picton who died in 1815 battle will not be removed or renamed after majority of locals vote to keep it amid BLM row

I didn't realise that he is the only Welshman buried in St Paul's Cathedral

More guts than those wishy-washy yellow bellied scummers

Language Timothy.

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

Seems to me that the majority of the upper classes, senior officers and Royalty were in that boat back then.

There really was white privilige! The people voted on it so it should stand but if it were me, I'd go with putting an accurate plaque on there telling what he was really like, warts and all. Fairs fair.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

I suspect with all this recent kerfuffle regarding blm those who are interested in the history of a specific monument/statue would have done their research and those that think its irrelevant to todays society will just shrug their shoulders and carry on with their lives.

The statue should be pulled down and thrown away.

Plenty of great welsh men and women to celebrate.

What about all those statues to your IRA scum who killed more people and did far more harm to more people than Picton ever did. A man who gave his life to defeat Europe biggest tyrant.

Sad news today lady Tebbit passed away today an innocent victim of the IRA bombing in Brighton which left her in a wheelchair for the rest of her life.

Poll: Sholud Wales rollout vaccination at full speed.

Yep,I remember that and old Norm being crest fallen. They might just a well have finished her off then.

This outrage was seen as a spectacular and a coup for the cause -the cause being a United Ireland by any means.

It was certainly an own goal for the IRA . The World woke up to terrorism especially the USA. All of which led to the IRA being defeated by the British Army and having to go to the peace table .

The only problem with the Picton Memorial is it’s nowhere near big enough.

April 1812, Badajoz.

Wellington: “My engineers are expressing grave doubts whether the task can be accomplished at all.”

Picton: “I can accomplish it.”

Always leading from the front, always exposed to the greatest danger. Fearless.

An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

Oh he was very brave, possibly to the point of stupidity but, was he a criminal? It's the same argument over again Loh. Do we get to judge 200 year old people by modern standards?

The answer should probably be no because modern standards lack the context to make good choices.
If Picton were born today he might be just as brave (or foolhardy) but he most wouldn't behave like the Picton of Badajoz, Waterloo or the "New World" because he'd be brought up by todays rules.

I wonder what people will make of us in 200 years? Assuming we haven't gone extinct by our own stupidity of course.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?
