Proper folk, the sort this country is proud of and why ?

I will steal a bit of glamour with Aneurin Bevan.
Not in my lifetime, he died in 1960.
Why ?

Butchers runner at 13, Miner, head of the Miners in Tredegar at 19, there’s obviously more.
Never lived his life without fault, but lived it when working people were just that.

David Lloyd George.

David Lloyd George was one of the 20th century's most famous radicals. He was the first and only Welshman to hold the office of Prime Minister. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

1908 — Lloyd George’s Old Age Pension Act was passed and formed part of the Social Welfare System. Half a million eligible people over the age of 70 and earning less than 12 shillings per week, received a weekly income of 5s per week or 7s 6d for married couples.

As was Plaid Cymru founder Saunders Lewis, funnily enough.

King Arthur 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

‘The Welsh are the direct descendants of the Romano-Britons of England and Wales, who were pushed back towards the west of Britain by the Anglo-Saxons in the 5th and 6th centuries. Arthur is considered by many to have been a Romano-British leader fighting the Anglo-Saxon invaders.

The legend of Arthur and his knights also appears in The Mabinogion, a collection of eleven stories collated from early medieval Welsh manuscripts, intertwining pre-Christian Celtic mythology, folklore, tradition and history’.

Yes he was real.

The real Arthur would have been from the area around what is now Edinburgh, if Aneirin is correct, and I suspect he is.

Henry VII. (Henry Tudor)

Born in Pembrokeshire castle.
His family were the Tudors of Penmynydd, Anglesey.
Descendent of Cadwaladr (the last ancient British King).
Grandfather was Owen Tudor (one of the heroes of the Battle of Agincourt).
Winner of the 'Wars of the Roses', defeating Richard III at the battle of Bosworth...Henry landed in West Wales with troops and marched through Wales gathering Welshmen to the cause (he made a diversion to Cefn Bryn to kiss 'Arthur's Stone' on his way to the battle).
After winning he governed sensibly finally provided these Isles with stability, ending the civil war between the nobility, revolutionising tax collecting and restoring the country's finances.
The father of Henry VIII (who broke Britain off from mainland European politics and control from Rome).
Grandfather of Elizabeth I who is possibly our most successful monarch ever, laying the groundwork for the future global British Empire.

All round ledge'

King Arthur has a welsh language name, and he would have spoken (a form of) welsh.

De facto .... King Arthur was a Cymro 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

John Graham Chambers, creator of Boxing's Queensberry Rules. The big fight this coming weekend between Canelo and Billy Joe Saunders will be fought under rules drawn up by a bloke from Llanelli over 150 years ago.

He was also primarily responsible for introducing competitive track and field athletics and the founding of the AAA. He was instrumental in the creation of the FA Cup and was support to Captain Matthew Webb, rowing beside him when he swam the channel.

In his own sporting career, he rowed twice in the Boat Race and coached four winning crews and became champion of England in the popular Victorian sport of pedestrianism (race walking).

His fingerprints are all over major British and world sporting events today, yet he remains largely unknown.

He achieved all of this before dying at the age of 40.
