| Andre Ayew on 12:58 - Apr 28 with 1436 views | Ajack_Kerouac | He runs out of gas after an hour, the problem is that he continues to play as if he hasn't ran out of gas (a massive heart). Start with Whittaker, let him run the arses off the defence for an hour, then bring Ayew on, full of gas, against a tiring defence...magic will then happen. | |

The thing is, there's more chance of a goal coming from an 'out of gas' Ayew than most of our team combined.

I know what you're saying, but I think that chance reduces as the game goes on. I reckon we would get the most out of him in that last half an hour and possibly extra time. As long as Lowe is on the field, and Hourihane, and Roberts, and Fulton (increasingly) I feel we have a chance of getting on the score sheet. My point is about game management. I feel we are still a good team at this level, solid at the back (although Woodman has a mistake in him), dominating midfield, some pace and power up front...but what I find is that when we start with Lowe and Ayew, and the game is not going how we want it to, we don't have that impact player on the bench...I like Whittaker, I'd start him, but he is far less likely to get on the score sheet than Ayew....but it's late in games where we either have to get the winner or the equalizer when we need to be bringing somebody on who is likely to score against a tiring defence. I'd keep Ayew and Routs back for the last half an hour.

We do now, we have Cullen. I’d be starting Ayew, Lowe and Routledge. Having three should be less taxing on Ayew and Lowe anyway, less chasing lost causes and battling to hold balls up, more useful possession. Routledge will likely tire after an hour or so. Cullen on. Less build up and swapping positions, but more goal threat.
| Andre Ayew on 14:44 - Apr 28 with 1338 views | Joe_bradshaw | I you’re a defender from Brentford, Bournemouth or Barnsley would rather be facing Ayew, Cullen or Whittaker at the start? Always try to do what your opponent doesn’t want you to do. | |

An interesting suggestion & might have had legs a good few weeks back when Ayew was clearly tired but didn’t want to rest - if we’d have tried it then might have been an option but way too risky at this point. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
| Andre Ayew on 16:49 - May 20 with 745 views | onehunglow | Can't we rest Routledge. This is a game where energy levels need to be 100% . We need players who will not "tire" not come on to give the ball away to the opposition. | |

It’s not as if he slouches about for an hour is it? This is exactly what substitutions are for. Barnsley regularly change two, sometimes three of their front men after 60/70 minutes to keep the high energy pressing game going.

That’s the notion people have struggled with all season. A fresh player who is worse, is unlikely to be better than a tired player who is far better. They are professional sport men with huge fitness levels capable of playing far more games than they actually do. Basketball players play 3 or 4 times a week, tennis players play on average similar to that in an 11 month season, with no noticeable dip in performance, this with international travel added. It’s simply down to injury prevention. [Post edited 20 May 2021 23:34]

Having played every minuite of every game he was fit for outside cup games, this is very unlikely. His injury brreak was probably a blessing. A forced break. If Swansea get to 2-0 he could be brought off to protect him but I do not think that would happen either.
