Looks like he is a jack.

I’m going to add provisional because there is another medical being sorted for Tuesday, maybe there’s a two for one offer 🤭

Excellent news, Keith, and superb reporting as usual.

Downes is a great fit for the club and would pair superbly as the pit bull destroyer next to Walsh’s more refined playmaker extraordinaire. Downes adds technical ability, energy and tenacity, combined with the awareness and willingness to make runs into the box.

Intelligent footballer, he sees the angles and positions himself between the lines, doesn’t switch off and reacts quickly, both in defense and attack. Always makes himself an outlet for his teammates, likes to move the ball on quickly and then move into space - toque, toque, and is an excellent quick passer and over short distances. He has the touch and vision necessary to play in a holding role but he would be best suited as the shuttler in a two-man midfield, preferably next to Walsh, or as one of the No 8s in a midfield three given freedom to roam on offense and charged with breaking up play out of possession.

Downes excels as the heat-seeking missile on defence, crunching into tackles, harrying attackers all over the pitch and never allowing the opposition a relaxed moment on the ball. He covers a lot of ground during matches, but he is not aimlessly running around. He presses intelligently and aggressively and closes down on the ball quickly, then he drops back and cuts off passing lanes. He’s not as active in attack as in defence but when he gets forward he is an efficient and effective progressive passer, makes good runs into open space down the channels and manages to put himself in dangerous positions in the final third where he gets off good shots.

His technical ability and passing range would stand out more with better, more skillful teammates and playing in a system that places more emphasis on possession play and ball retention, which Martin is implementing with us. Brighter days ahead for the club and for all of us as fans with Martin at the helm and bringing in players of such quality, talent and potential.

Cheers, I’m hopeful this happens within the next day or so, it’s likely, the indication that there will be two medicals tells me that Laird could be the other one.👍

High praise. Is this from watching or a report?
Got to be honest I only have any sense of the player from stats and online reports and can't for the life of me see how this player is reportedly costing £1.5 million (rising to £2 million).
The report mentions his attacking credentials but 2 goals and 2 assists in 2 seasons doesn't scream impact!
His knee injury is also a worry - 26 games missed last season in three sets of absences all reportedly a knee injury. Transfermarkt is also listing him as an injured player. Averaged 66 minutes a game.
I'm sure my cup will be half full at some point.

SSN reporting it now.

SWANS SWOOP FOR DOWNES

Swansea have signed midfielder Flynn Downes from Ipswich, the Championship club have announced.

The 22-year-old has signed a four-year deal at the Swansea.com Stadium.

The deal comes too late for Downes to be eligible for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup tie at Reading but he could make his Swans debut in Saturday’s Championship clash against Sheffield United.

Downes, an Ipswich youth product, is the Welsh club’s fifth signing of the summer after Kyle Joseph, Liam Walsh, Joel Piroe and Jamie Paterson.

He made his first-team debut on the opening day of the 2017-18 campaign and became a regular the following season after a loan spell at Luton. He made 25 appearances for the League One side last term after missing part of the season with a knee injury.

I just watched a video of him on the other site. Not only tackles but robs the ball. Exactly what we’ve been needing. Captained Ipswich at 20 and looks a natural leader by example. So what if he’s got an edge? I love the sound of his competitiveness. Good Video, have a gander at it.

Good to see us signing players rather than all loans. I guess Ayew moving on is a huge weight off the finances.
