| Bercow - Banned from Parliament for Life on 11:50 - Mar 8 with 2052 views | Lohengrin | ” He also argued he had been "targeted by three disgruntled former staffers because he had set out to be a reforming figure prepared to set aside custom and practice in the pursuit of a more radical agenda intended to make the Commons more inclusive and diverse". Anybody who remembers Bercow from his time with The FCS and the Monday Club wouldn’t stop laughing for a week after reading that. | |

| Bercow - Banned from Parliament for Life on 11:50 - Mar 8 with 2051 views | Catullus | I wonder what the poisonous widgets response will be to this, "A report published by the Independent Expert Panel into the former Commons speaker's conduct states Mr Bercow "has been a serial liar" and "a serial bully". It adds that his behaviour "fell very far below that which public has a right to expect from any member of parliament" and that were he still a sitting MP, it would have been recommended that "he should be expelled by resolution of the House". "As it is, we recommend that he should never be permitted a pass to the parliamentary estate," the report concludes." Serial LIAR and serial BULLY, a conclusion that many people had already come to. | |

Trouble is the position of the Speaker is to be totally neutral he is not supposed to show bias to one party over another. He is also not allowed to express his own political views or oppose legislation he disagrees with.

He was always a nasty arrogant little man. He seemed more interested in playing up to his American fans on Twitter that doing his job. He turned the place into even more of a farce than it usually is. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Minimum age of 35. Minimum of ten years actual work experience, preferably including some private sector but ex-NHS, Emergency Services or Armed Forces could be given special dispensation. Must actually have spent several years living in the constituency you wish to represent. No more Special Advisers, researchers or loyal party workers parachuted into safe seats. It's not going to be popular but I'd also increase the wage significantly. Anyone with the ability to be a good MP these days will either want to work on the side or won't go near the job in the first place as the money is far less than they can earn elsewhere. Maybe we could reduce the number of them to make up for it.

And I'd add that to be Health Secretary, you need a medical background, same with law, defence etc. PMQs and any other questions, the person MUST answer the question put. No jeering, no drowning out. Proper debate, room for consensus and cross party agreement. Get rid of the whips. Need proper adult debate

Not sure about that first bit as you'd be limiting the potential pool of candidates. Would a Chancellor of the Exchequer have to be an economist or an accountant? Would be a big advantage, but not essential IMO.

Maybe that's not a bad thing ? When you see people like Ben Wallace speaking, he really knows his brief. This morning he was really on point, properly conceded what he was asked about the VISA programme and gave educated answers re the No Fly Zone.

If you need a Defence Secretary and you don't have a suitably qualified candidate you can't keep the job open. If you've got someone like Wallace who fits the bill then fair enough, but you won't always. Unless of course you have career quotas for MP's. A certain percentage have to be lawyers, another engineers etc, but then you run the risk of picking someone substandard just to meet the quota. [Post edited 8 Mar 2022 15:10]

Fair point. Another option is to have non MPs in these specialist roles, not influenced by politics. Won't happen though

I agree with all of that and I'd put the wages high enough but change the expenses scam to everything you need being supplied through a central stores and (how often have I said this) don't let them buy houses in London if they are MP's outside London but build blocks of flats with each constituency assigned one, all flats to be identical. If they want adornments they can buy themselves, not charge us.

Absolutely get rid of the whips and have free votes on everything. get rid of lobbying too,, don't allow them in, any lobbying to be done through official channels and anybody caught speaking to lobbyists about official business outside those channels should face deselection and criminal investigation, there's far too much corruption. PMQ's, totally agree, they behave like a bunch of children at playtime. Watching parliament live is an embarrassment to the country, if they are not shouting down or snoring it seems. Oh, the Lords to become an elected upper chamber, no more peerages. It can be fixed but the people who can fix it won't end their gravy train. This discussion has become groundhog day! We kkep saying these things.

Nothing ever gets down against the Senedd 's inefficient members. Fortunately Westminster has robust procedures against a Speaker who crossed the lines of impartiality and misconduct in offence. Bercow did everything he could to block the democratic will of the UK by trying to block Brexit and supporting Labour's attempts to defy the will of the people. It is telling that once he stepped down as speaker he crossed sides and offered to stand as a Labour candidate.

He has claimed to have never backed Putin, even though under his chairmanship the Stop The West coalition regularly backed Putin. The usual thing with Jezza. Spends his life surrounded by anti West, anti Semitic people. Claims not to be one.

Well no, Kilky isn't going to criticise the Senedd but I have to agree with him about Bojo, he says this about Bercow but he himself bent, broke and tried to change the rules to protect his allies, it's rank hypocrisy regardless of the Senedd who are irrelevant to this thread, which is about Bercow.
