| Stadium Expansion - again 18:14 - Apr 11 with 4144 views | johnlangy | On the day that the Swans are promoted back to the PL at the end of next season two things should happen. Russell Martin should begin recruiting for the PL season and the diggers should move in to start the stadium expansion. The need for the expansion is simply explained by the numbers. When we got to the PL the stadium capacity was 20,520. The max number of ST's we could sell was 16,400 because 10% of capacity had to be allowed for the visiting teams supporters and 10% had to be available for walk up purchase. It's a statement of the obvious that if the max number of ST's you can sell do sell then there's potential to sell more. But the Club were constrained by the stadium size. And although the capacity was increased slightly to about 20,900 by the end, every home game was a sell out in the home ends. That's 133 consecutive games. This season the average attendance so far is around 17,200. This in a season that's been a let down in terms of table position. If we were in the play offs or challenging for the autos that average would be probably 20,000. Which would mean virtually no ability to accommodate the extra supporters that would want to watch PL football. And the only way more people will become regular supporters is if they are able to get tickets. Which in turn would mean there'd be better support when we get relegated again because a number of them would have become supporters. Note the optimism at the start. No harm in that imo. | | | | |

| Stadium Expansion - again on 18:45 - Apr 11 with 3096 views | Whiterockin | The season ticket uptake this season is distorted because many like myself paid £79 (I think) because we left our money in during covid and our age. The gate numbers every game include season ticket holders who fail to turn up, the true attendance is far less. Personally I think the season ticket uptake next season will be far less, as people are struggling financially. Would we sell out in the Premier League, yes the first season or two, any longer and we would struggle with the less attractive teams and midweek. | | | |
| Stadium Expansion - again on 18:48 - Apr 11 with 3093 views | STID2017 | The beginning optimism I agree with. However I dont think we will ever expand the stadium. An interesting perspective but entirely wrong in my view. The anti US agenda promoted by Trust loyalist supporters has distorted the view of the fans. The Trust supporters sold the members a pup in the legal case issue. The last lot sold up after telling everyone including the Trust they could do no more and the club needed fresh capital. The Chairman announced this after selling Shelvey around 2014 or so. This much needed cash injection included expanding the stadium The last lot did not have the cash or inclination to borrow and invest. The Trust loyalists seemingly wanted to hand cuff the cash strapped former owners stating thing could carry on as before (2015) around the time of the Moore's interest. The US people has done the research and bought the land (McDonalds remember?) and got the permissions and had stadium sponsor lined up. DC United are sponsored by Audi. Levein did a very good job their and the value of DC United has rocketed. This is his expertise. The US rationale for buying the club was to increase the valuation by expanding the stadium for £20m and getting the likes of Audi to pay for it over a long term naming rights. All good stuff. All this achieved while Huw Jenkins kept the football side sweet. as he had done for 14 years. In the discussions with the Trust 2017 leaks suggested the US people would pay the Trust £5m for 5% of their shares and eventually reduce the Trusts holding to 10%. The Trust would then be asked to reinvest £2m back in as 10% of £20m which is £2m. (only those in the know can confirm if this is true). The Trust leadership reportedly rejected this offer. Consequently Huw and Clement signed three crocks Bony Sanches and Clucass for about £32m and that was that. The US people might still want to expand the stadium if Martin is as good as Martin tells them he is. The longer he stays the better Swansea will be will be his argument. Back to the future. On the other hand having notionally had their fingers burnt they may want out and sell up in the PL before any expansion. (Get you bingo ticket ready). The US owners like me, people, with interests in finance and investments (does not include the old Trust leadership) have seen with some element of pleasant surprise the whopping £200m price tag on Burnley FC. (capacity 22,000). Burnley do not even sell out as a Martin team would do. Average attendances 12,000 to 15,000 according to Transfmkt. Perhaps the US people think they could get that sort of figure (£200m) without expansion. Critics of the Burnley analogy (and there are many) point out that Burnley own their own ground whereas Swansea have 30 year commercial lease type ownership. The Swansea. com stadium sponsorship is "in house" for 10 years. No awkward sponsor to "buy out". Do you see how this makes sense folks? The US owners are 'cool dudes' in my view. With the persuasive Silverstein on board the sky is the limit. I am a rare fan of them. They are exactly what Swansea city need. They learned that player recruitment is key to their aspirations having given the old chairman an his recruitment guru too much faith . Cheques and balances are to the fore. If Martin can do what Brendan did Uncle Sam. Jenkins, Morgan, the Trust and if he has any sense Mr Martin will be quids in big time. Call me a blind optimist basking on the 0-4 at CCS. There are worse things to be. [Post edited 11 Apr 2022 21:17]

| Stadium Expansion - again on 23:50 - Apr 11 with 2714 views | Lorax | Oh please don't let Resloven hijack another thread! Expansion should have happened when we survived that second season in the EPL. We didn't need to go berserk but put another tier over the famiky stand first with about 4000 seats, then wait and see. If that filled up then put another tier on the away end but give it to home fans and give away fans more seats in the lower tier. 28000 would probably be enough. I'm failry confident if we put prices low enough the crowds would be higher, it's just dong the maths then to make sure we still make more money. The chance was wasted though and unless we get our own Abramovich I don't see us expanding in my lifetime. | | | |
| Stadium Expansion - again on 01:19 - Apr 12 with 2697 views | Badlands | Any expansion would be difficult as the club doesn't own the stadium. Would there be a shared % ownership or an attempt to buy a long lease? Permission might be given to expand but is pointless outside the PL. The Americans had sought to sell naming rights to Audi but the firm wanted it to be VW Stadium. Then we got relegated and the sums didn't add up. What really needs to happen is for us to get fans in now. Fill the stadium and make the case for expansion. It would also add revenue that could be used for strengthening team and club. Another trick missed, I think, was not to have photo id on STs. There's a seat near me that is taken by a ST holder but shared amongst half a dozen family and friends. Money is tight but if we want to improve the team we have to be prepared to pay for it. | |

| Stadium Expansion - again on 05:15 - Apr 12 with 2644 views | Dr_Parnassus | I don’t understand why people still want to expand the stadium. The novelty wore off the Premier League within a few seasons and we were not selling out towards the end. Sure we could get some floating fans for the big couple of games a season against Man City, Man Utd and Liverpool but probably not sufficient enough to justify the cost. We are going to spend most of our life outside the PL, we have to be realistic and understand that. In which case we have thousands upon thousands of empty seats ruining the atmosphere yet still needing maintenance costs. Even if we only expanded to 5000 extra seats, and they were taken up by season tickets - it probably only works out at £1m a year after various taxes and would cost around £8m to expand. So we would have to stay there for 8 seasons just to break even on ticket sales. Extra food and merch purchased would probably service extra staff, upkeep costs and facilities needed to house another 5000 people. If we spent another 8 years in the EPL out of the next 50, I’d be stunned. So for me, a pointless and expensive white elephant. | |

Yep. We should have struck whilst the iron was hot, but true to form Jenkins dithered and the opportunity was missed. The whole "pro vs anti" Owners thing is boring now though. After making a shedload of early mistakes (Leaving Jenkins in full control, Bradley, overspending as a result of the first one) they are now running the club exactly the way I want the club to be run, so everything else is just white noise to me. We could go the way the spoiled brats want us to and demand a wealthy owner who would "invest" our way back into the Premier League, but eventually we'd end up back in the Championship, in all likelihood in a much worse state than we are now. No ta. I'll stick with sustainable.

If EFL go with EUFA fair funding rules the wealthy owner route will be harder to pull off. Not impossible but harder. So, IMO, having a solvent well run club far more important now than ever. As I have always said, Swans fans should turn up and support the club whoever we are playing and in whatever league we are in.

The problem is that the Uefa "Fair funding" rules are anything but. What they are is an attempt to pull the ladder up behind the established giants. The likes of Man Utd, Real Madrid, Juventus etc do not want upstarts like Man City and PSG taking their places at the top table so via Uefa rules were brought in to try and prevent them doing just that, rules that they've tried every trick in the book to circumvent. What football needed to do is stop the likes of Ridsdale, or the myriad other shysters taking control of clubs, promising the Earth, spending madly then doing a runner leaving the club with the bill. There are better ways of doing that than FFP which only intrenches existing power. I'm against the "Rich owner" model because we're about a hundred times more likely to find a Ridsdale than a Mansour. A risk I'd rather not take. [Post edited 12 Apr 2022 12:09]

Not sure why you have listed all that drivel as a reply to my post. The subject is stadium expansion. There is only one reason why Levein has not flipped & that is we have spent 4 of his 5-6 seasons in the second tier … thanks primarily due to the ineptitude of the owners & trusting the previous ownership with the director of football role
| Stadium Expansion - again on 18:35 - Apr 12 with 2313 views | johnlangy | Lots to comment on. Whiterockin - You're right, gates have held up because of the very reasonable prices for a couple of seasons and with money having been left in the Club during Covid. It will be very interesting to see what the ST sales are for next season. Dr P said we weren't selling out toward the end of being in the PL. I didn't remember it that way so I checked wikipedia. In the last PL season (17/18) there was one crowd vs West Brom that was 19,580. I knew there had been one anomaly but with a particular reason for it which escapes me now. There were a couple of lowish crowds (20176 and 20228 vs Burnley and Bournemouth. But most of the empty seats against them would have been in their end), Most of the others were from 20700 to 20900. So sellouts as far as i'm concerned. It may seem like over the top going with this detail but Dr P's comment made me question my memory. Another Dr (W) said we should have struck while the iron was hot. In other words we should have done it the last time. So what's the difference in doing it this time ? If it made sense to you then it still makes sense now. Here's a memory that has always stuck with me. In one season while we were in the PL Burnley were one of the real strugglers who ended up relegated. Instead of throwing money at trying to avoid relegation they signed Chris Woods for £12 million (wages maybe £2 million ?). They were still relegated but because they hadn't spent a fortune they were able to keep the vast bulk of their PL team and ended up getting promoted back the next season or the one after. What did we do ? We bought Bony and Ayew for a combined £30 million. On combined wages of £9 million a year. The result was we had to sell everything that moved to stay afloat when relegated. If we get promoted to the PL again would it not make sense to commit a certain amount of the SKY money to have something tangible to show for it rather than spend it all on expensive players on outlandish wages ? There'd still be a hell of a lot left over for new players. Remember this. Stadium expansion would be the cost of one Sam Clucas. Which would you prefer ? | | | |

There is only one reason why Levein has not flipped & that is we have spent 4 of his 5-6 seasons in the second tier … thanks primarily due to the ineptitude of the owners & trusting the previous ownership with the director of football role |
You used the word 'flip'. It is misleading. You are making big claims about things you do not appear to understand. "There is only one reason why Levien has not flipped" Oh really?. Well can give you many reasons. a) The required buying price b) Finding a buyer c) Wanting to keep it longer to benefit from football inflation d) Enjoying watching the games as owner e) Complete trust in Mr Martin and Mr Allen f) Getting greater value from expanding the stadium g) Getting naming rights. h) Diluting the lazy Welsh shareholders while in the championship. i) Possible future receipt of dividends k) Enjoyment of building a business improving reputation. To sell the cub at premium price the club would need tp prove it was not a Yo yo club. This rules out a quick "flip". Burnley and Palace have done this.
