We grew up with not much money, I found a wallet with about £10 in when I was a kid, (lot of money in the 80s to a 8 year old boy) there was a drivers licence in it, took it home and my mam drove me to the chaps address. Wasn’t mine | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I've done that sort of thing all my life, but a find like that you would have to make a decision. I don't think you could definitely say what you do unless you are in the position. Circumstances for many would dictate.

Very fair response. If I was desperate and my family needed it, but how do you take what you need and not want you want ? Crosses a line doesn’t it ? If you are need, do you ‘need’ £130k ?

True. But I can imagine situations where it would be difficult to make a rational decision. Just say you had a business with cash flow issues due to the pandemic and the cash would secure your employees work and hopefully see you through the problems. Do you stick or twist. Guess the answer is turn that round. You’re struggling as you’re the person that lost it.

| What would you do .? on 23:08 - Apr 29 with 1080 views | Lorax | Hmmm. Now I think of myself as basically honest but this would be a real conundrum. 130k is a lot of dosh and it would pay off ALL of our bills, would pay for the work we want doing on the house and still leave us with 20k. it's a life changing sum of money. It might depend where it came from, if I could find out. If it was from a couple of "ripped off" OAP's then it would go straight back. If it was from a rich person who could afford to lose it or even proceeds of crime it'd be much easier to keep it and say nothing. Even honest people can be sorely tempted! | | | |

Bollocks. When the police and authorities stop fining someone who does 34 mph in a 30 zone. When the courts stop fining and potentially jailing someone for refusing to pay a fine for not having a TV license, then and only then would I start to cooperate on issues like handing in found money. Fortunately I’m not skint, so if I found that money I’d give it away to people who I believe need it.

Yes. It’s theft by finding. He bought the cabinet, the money wasn’t included. What would happen eg if someone’s bank card and a note of the PIN number was inside ? Or a wallet suffer with cash or a passport ? Would you keep the wallet ? Spend all the money and not let them know ? Would you use the debit card saying ‘it’s mine now ?’ It’s no different. It’s not your money, clearly a mistake. No difference to seeing someone drop a wallet in front of you, picking it up and keeping it. 100% illegal.

Legally I obviously cannot argue with you but most people would argue there is a big difference between finding money with no idea of the origin and finding bank cards/wallets or anything that can be traced. The £100 in the Tesco cashpoint scenario, I'd hand it in too, there's every chance it belongs to someone who cannot afford to lose it. County Jim's scenario, likewise, very much the right thing to do. I'd feel guilty as sin if I kept a pensioners purse. However, I wouldn't feel guilty if I found 130k and it was a drug dealers cash or something a Premier league footballer had stashed away and forgot about, or any other very rich person for that matter. I'll go with being sort of like Robin Hood, I'd share a bit with friends who are broke, maybe even give some to charity but put the rest to good use for my family's security...after I'd kept it stashed in my attic for 6 months to make sure nobody came looking for it. If the people who make our laws can lie, cheat and steal then what do they expect the rest of us to do?

That’s the crux of theft by finding. In the case mentioned, they did know where it came from. Question is did you do what’s reasonable ? Drug deal eg, dealers aren’t t going up let that amount of money lie, they don’t let a £30 debt go, so that much ? They’d find you. Does it matter if the owner can afford it ? Of course problem is, how do you know who the owner is ? How much ok to keep ? It’s either right or wrong. Fair point re law makers but we need to be better else how can we criticise them ? Society would break down . I know the stuff I’ve got I’ve paid for and earnt
