Even so, there are a lot of parents struggling so this has to be better than doing nothing.

Problem is that administration for means testing outweighs the cost of universal provision in many cases.

Couldn't agree more, should be mean tested. Like this £400 and the price cap on energy, millions being given to people who don't need it.

I really don't get that? They have all the information they need at the HMRC. They can check people tax returns/incomes so shouldn't it be easy enough? If we are talking sseveral hundreds and maybe over a thousand pounds, which it will be over the school year if there's more than one child, how much does it cost to check a families income?

Right, I see where you’re going wrong. You think government departments share information with eachother😂

Well no, I think they should share information so that they can work effectively. I accept that in reality that doesn't happen because such a system would have the Sir Humphreys ina right old tizzy! We have companies such as Amazon, Microsoft and Google who run global businesses and do so pretty seamlessly, they deal with billions of people in hundreds of countries but a government can't even do that seamless work in one country of less than 70 million. It's farcical.

I don't think it needs to in this case. It's Welsh Government taking the easy way out. Take "flying start" as an example, it grants pre-nursery places based on the prosperity of a postcode. My daughters school has a flying start nursery but my daughter wasn't allowed to attend. Exactly the same criteria could be used - it already exists. Granting those in Mayals primary the same free meals as those somehwere like Clase seems like a waste of money to me.

Government departments are getting a lot better at talking to each other. Systems are in place that link HMRC, DWP and the Home Office, and they do it quite well.
| Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back. |

But there were free school meals before for those on benefits.

Which is a bit odd seeing it was the Conservative Party whi introduced free school meals for children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 in England in 2014.

Nope. And I’d have no issue in pointing it out either but with different ent parties ruling for the last dozen years it’s tricky (for me anyway) to think of a comparable example.
