It's probably not a popular position, but the rising cost of energy might do some good. The amount of waste must be immense.
Turn things off if you're not using them. Shut a window if the central heating is on. Does your telly really need to be on standby?
The Western World has had a pretty good ride recently with the availability of both cheap energy and cheap credit. Won't hurt them to have a bit of a reality check on both. Mortgage rates of 2% have played a major role in houses becoming unaffordable for a lot of people. A rebalancing is overdue. |  |

That Includes workplaces too. Does every electrical item need to be on permanently? No.
Offices being cleaned at night, they switch all the lights on and do a few rooms at a time.

Leaving it on Standby would use a lot less, than just leaving it on!
Best to pull the plug completely though, because it's very surprising how many objects left on standby over the space of a year, will cost.
My pet hate at the moment, the wife puts the tv on without fail, to the early morning ITV programme, yet she doesn't watch it, I'm like why the hell don't you just listen to the radio, the kwh per hour is a lot less. | |

About 20 years ago I read an article about stuff like this. Apparently in America at the time, the equivalent of one Nuclear Power station needed to be online just to cover IT equipment left on overnight rather than powered down, and this was then. Now it's probably three or four times that. | |
