Looks highly likely your suspicions are justified, and we will all find out why once the inquest is concluded.

| Shocking news this Morning on 19:28 - Dec 25 with 2363 views | Wingstandwood | Sad news! I have not been on this stretch of road and I am unfamiliar with it.... Did the car veer off on a straight stretch of road at a very sharp angle in a way like a car would for example with a tyre blow out etc, or did it fail to negotiate a bend at speed and end up in the water? Is that road section totally open and free of any barrier protection and unfenced? | |

As the DM picture shows there are fences but not strong enough to stop a car. They were probably going too fast and/or lost control, for whatever reason. There are tragedies at all times of the year but they always seem worse at Christmas.

Aye, and there are other possibilities to add to that e.g. the driver having a sudden medical emergency like a fit, or stroke, or aneurism, or heart condition etc. And yes Christmas is truly the worst possible time of year for a tragedy like that.

Must have been going some lick if that is the case? Just going from memory it's a fair old distance from the road to the river But if the fencing was not good enough, it needs to be addressed asap.

The fence is on the bridge next to the road its primary purpose is to stop pedestrians falling into the river doubt it was ever designed to stop a car let alone a HGV from going into the river from what looked liked a head on collision. From the photos on some sites looked liked the car was travelling from Sainsburys to cross the second bridge but failed to turn at all once past the traffic lights Drove past the site on Christmas morning when all the road were closed. Tragic for the families and we will have to wait for the inquest and police accident investigation for the full story.

| Shocking news this Morning on 20:03 - Dec 26 with 1569 views | Scotia | It's very sad. Two 36 year olds involved. I ran passed there this morning, I can't imagine how it happened really, its tragic. | | | |
| Shocking news this Morning on 19:51 - Dec 29 with 1273 views | britferry | They've named the 2 that passed away. The lady was driving the mini, she lived in Bonymaen, so I presume this stretch of road was well known to her, which makes it even more confusing how she could have crossed 3 lanes of the road, a pavement and then gone thru the fence. RIP to them both https://www.walesonline.co.uk/ https://www.walesonline.co.uk/ | |

| Shocking news this Morning on 08:16 - Dec 30 with 1106 views | Scotia | It's very sad. What a waste of life. I ran passed there yesterday, it seems that they must have got up a lot of speed passed Sainsburys and missed the right turn as there are no skid marks on the road. I think the road bridge by Sainsburys has crash barriers, but the upstream one doesn't. Totally tragic. RIP. | | | |

You are right the original bridge had motorway style crash barriers as well as pedestrian barriers. The second bridge only has pedestrian barriers. Not sure who was responsible for that the Welsh Government, West Glamorgan county Council or Swansea City. Doubt even the shortly to be introduced 20 mph speed limit what have prevented the accident .

That's a good post, regarding the crash barriers. I think what's happened here is, when they changed the traffic layout, they did not do that. What I am saying is, from memory the original design for that bridge, you could not have had such an accident. The traffic was flowing entirely different. It was away from it, rather than towards it.

| Shocking news this Morning on 09:59 - Dec 31 with 807 views | majorraglan | I’d have thought they wouldn’t have put the more substantial heavy duty barriers because the bridge is in a 30 mph zone, there a pavement in front of the drop creating an additional barrier and nobody would have expected an accident like this to happen. This is the first accident of its type I can remember at that location although there may have been others. It may be the initial installation of the original railings was appropriate and proportionate. We’ll have to wait and see what the inquest discloses. What’s happened is tragic. | | | |
