Sewage spills 18:08 - May 18 with 2186 viewsbritferry

Its time we re-nationalised these water firms, they are a disgrace

They reckon there were 800 spills a day last year

But hey, they've now said sowwy

a firm reckons, to pay for the clean-up, £1.75 a week will be added to their customers bills, just as long as their shareholders dividends aren't affected

Poll: Which kid would you give money to?

When they were Nationalised they dumped all Sewage straight into the sea particularly in Swansea with several sewage outfalls in Mumbles and Swansea Bay. They were all diverted to the new sewage works in Port Tennant after privatisation.

Poll: Sholud Wales rollout vaccination at full speed.

It’s not much better now!

Most of the water companies are owned by overseas investors including sovereign wealth funds and governments. Thames Water are the biggest of the English water companies and have a revenue of around £2.1bn and a profit of around ££350m to £500m - but they are £14bn in debt - that’s mental. If they go under or walk away, we’ll probably pick up a huge chunk of debt. There are real concerns about the debts levels of some of the Water companies, some are partially owned by shell companies and there are concerns huge amounts of cash have been transferred out and been replaced by debt.

He can afford to he "earned" (loose term} £332,000 in 2022 . Data from April this year sewage was dumped in Welsh rivers 83,000 times in 2022, lasting 600,000 hours. As Nick Ferrari on a recent Question Time edition suggested as a solution a few years in prison for the CEO of each Company may focus their attention rather than making us pay for their incompetence , I wish .

£4.3 billion of that debt has been invested in the new Thames Tidal Tunnel designed to take excess sewage from London to a new Sewage works in East London which will be the largest in Europe. This will result in the sewage bring treated and not overflowing into the Thames when it is opened in 2025.

Yes but prices started to rise and now we pay a lot more for what is basically the same level of service.

The difference here is they are supposedly apologising for whats been happening but it's a fake apology because it's followed up with things will improve but the people we've let down will have to ay more for it.

I wonder, out of all these water companies that have clearly failed, how many CEO's got wage rises and big bonuses during all this "dumping"?

The DWr Cymri fella gets over 700k per year AND this year he got a nice bonus that took his wages over the 1 million mark.

How many new reservoirs have been built since privatisation , just one , although a contentious issue for some it has to be a prerequisite to ensuring security of supply yo an ever growing population from 67 million to 75 million by 2050, the threat that England for example will run out of water in 25 years has to be seen as a concern and yet despite billions in profits being made each year since 1989 the country's water supply is facing a very uncertain future ,due to a focus divis being paid than reinvestment

Chicken sheds - Over 350 now in Powys with 12 million birds.
When they spread the chicken muck it stinks for a week.
It can’t be good. The rivers turn green.

Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

Could do with nationalising a lot of things. The for profit element reduces any incentive to improve services to close to zero.
Water firms continuously dump sewage they should be treating and then pay the small fine for doing so. Maybe build sufficient infrastructure or would that impact on shareholder profits too much.

As you know,I like wild swimming but it’s becoming a real issue of debate now between me and wifey as we have been in rivers that have proven polluted.
It’s very upsetting.
We have a lovely land and we fail to look after it .
Lakes probably better

That is the nub of it.

All our utilities should be nationalised and run for the good of the country. Any profits should be reinvested, any excess used to keep prices down or go to the exchequer to help keep taxes down.

For too long our politicians have run the country for the benefit of themselves and their rich friends.

These water comanies with massive debts, let them go under then take them back into national ownership for peanuts. I mean, come on, how does a company making 350 to 500 million profit that hasn't been investing in infrastructure or giving massive pay rses to everyone get so much in debt? it's obviously dodgy and what are the odds that very soon the government ends up bailing these debts out and WE have to pay for it while the rich thieves rake off ever more billions.

Some bottom of the barrel Tory MP came out yesterday stating that he was fine with swimming in sewage as a child. Says it all really. That was the defence for raw sewage being dumped all round the UK.

Nationalisation never works. There is no incentive for a Nationalised company to be innovative and efficient. Nationalised companies are usually heavily overstaffed and unionised and are run for the benefit of the staff. The unions are never willing to change working practices and of course the sick/absenteeism rate is twice that in private industry.

I'm not saying you are wrong, but privatisation has also proven not to be a good model for public service type institutions.

Water, energy, telecomms, rail, mail- not many success stores there.

In education in England we’ve seen the rise of academy CEOs, which in some areas has seen people with salaries of £130k+ rise to about 12 x against comparable LA workers.

That was how nationalised industry worked in the past. Lets not live in the past. Unions don't have the same powers today. Union membership is vastly lower than it was 40 years ago.

Things could be run so much better today and besides, in the capiltalist system we all know the rich have gotten increasingly richer whilst the majority are being left behind. Living standards are dropping, the NHS, police and schools are all getting worse. Meanwhile our privatised utilities charge us a fortune for increasingly poor service and tell us we'll have to ay even mre whilst the priviliged few cream off millions.

We need a better way.
