| Yates seems a lost man up front on 07:32 - Oct 25 with 2181 views | jack247 | He’s not a target man, he’s always going to be ineffective with balls into his chest a long way from goal. We had this problem playing that way to him and Cullen in wider positions earlier in the season. We need him facing goal in and around the penalty area. Ok, he was injured yesterday, but surely we need Kukharevych if we’re going to play like that. Better still, Patino in midfield and try to play through teams. | | | |
| Yates seems a lost man up front on 08:09 - Oct 25 with 2147 views | Dr_Winston | Yates is not a Bony, who can hold the ball up on his own for 5-10 seconds until support arrives. Nor is he a Piroe, who will drop deep and create his own chances if needs be. He's a penalty area striker. He needs service from out wide and the centre and got absolutely none of it last night. What the hell is he supposed to do? He worked and chased everything with little in return except people blaming him for it. Big Mick would have fared little better. If we'd had Ginelly available instead of the utterly out of position Cullen then maybe he might have fared a little better, but the lack of a midfield would still have hurt us. | |

He runs around a lot ,angry and tries. Trouble is we paid 2 million for this player and we deserve better ,ie more effectiveness . It’s not down to effort but talent Bony should not be mentioned in the same sentence

I disagree that he chased everything. IMO he goes missing in games last night was no different, he chases and closes down at times and other times he won't go five yards to close. I agree that he is a box player and last night he was feeding off scraps, but if he wasn't effective and we could not get the ball to him he should have been pulled. Bringing Patino on would have given us a better chance of getting the ball to him, but when Patterson went off there was no chance. As for Cullen out of position I can understand the reason, with Ashby starting I imagine Duff wanted cover in front of him hence Cullen out wide, it doesn't happen when Key plays.

My Black Lab is powerful ,has an eye for a ball and destroys anyone that gets in the way . Come to think of it, she could play up front and run around . Loads of stamina too and never complain. She loves support though and positive play and her tummy tickled . Maybe Jerry should have his tummy tickled too or given a treat .

"He worked and chased everything with little in return except people blaming him for it." What are you doing when matches are being played? In a lifetime of playing and watching football I have never seen a striker who goes out of his way not to get involved - he makes no effort to make space, no effort to receive a ball. here's a clue - watch him every time we get a throw-in - he will always stand at least ten meters out of reach to the thrower. Watch him every time we get a free kick in the opposing half and how he makes no effort to make himself available. Watch him when we have a goal kick and how he hides out of distance for anything Rushworth can send his way. he's another Obafemi - a "camera shot" player who runs enough to be seen but totally ineffective at affecting the situation. Chased everything - my aunt fanny!

And the response to that critique ,or lack of it,is unsurprising . Yates is turning out to be a dud, albeit an expensive one . We want him to succeed but he looks lost for a reason . Key was @ good acquisition but the rest are not what we expected or hoped although with Ashby I’m not sure a PL club of the size of Newcastle would have him on their books .

I think this is a fair post with valid criticisms. A little exaggerated maybe, but I can see where you’re coming from. He does seem to share some attributes with Fulton. Great at hassling opponents and making nuisances of themselves, not so good at giving team mates options when we’re looking to play out of defence (Fulton) or construct an attack (Yates). Unfortunately, it’s the type of post some of our more negative fans are incapable of making, so they resort to schoolyard insults or slagging off Kyle Naughton. Noticeable how the front three and to an extent Paterson chopped and changed during our 4 game winning run, but kept to Yates in the middle, Lowe and Cullen on their sides last night. I

NB. Questioning an extended contract for Naughton is not slagging off ,for many . Naughton had an extra contract, from what I read, because he has been a good player,is experienced and a good trainer. That this is seen worthy says it all. Why is he not being picked when we are so threadbare ? He was signed as back up and is isn’t being deployed as Duff obviously doesn’t rate him .

Interesting post. I recall watching a Cardiff u21 v Swansea U21 and assessing 20 year old Jaden Forrester as a centre forward. It was during Covid. Big fellow 6 ft 3 in. He had a knack for not being where the ball was. Long balls allows the player time to assess the flight and get in a challenge. Jaden at 1.86 m did not really use his bulk and got no where near any long ball. The Cardiff defence had an easy day. Jaden was on a good goal scoring run but seemed not to want to get involved. Always 10 m -15m away from any long pass out of defence. He would go left and the ball would go right. In fact he had going the wrong way down to an art form. Swansea got a penalty. He did a weak side foot the Cardiff keeper saved. He slammed the ball into the hoardings ferociously in frustration. If he had hit the ball that hard for the penalty Swansea would have won. He plays for the Old Wulfunians these days. (me neither)

Totally agree with you. Every centre half he plays against has an armchair ride, he has no presence, and looks sh*t scared to head a ball when it’s kicked anywhere near him, half the time he doesn’t even make an attempt to jump for it. Like any No9 he needs the service, but he can’t engineer anything for himself, or his team mates. Needs to be rested, but especially now with all the injuries, that isn’t going to happen. Are the manager and his coaching staff not seeing the same thing as we are? ie. Headless chicken syndrome. At this moment in time, Yates and Cullen are a waste of a shirt. The sign of a good manager is when he improves players, by using his coaching skills. It’s not happening with these two, that’s for sure.

He hasn’t improved Cullen, he was better under Martin and will never be a winger. Paterson has come on leaps and bounds under him in fairness. This is a criticism of Duff though, if he plays Yates down the middle on his own, especially if we are playing long balls to his chest nowhere near the box, it isn’t going to work. He’s not big or physical enough. Play him behind Kukharevych or get the front three tighter and allow them to interchange, there’s obviously a player there. 15 goals last season. That’s 75% of what Piroe got and in the top 10 goal scorers in a relegated team.

His score rate is one in three this season this is similar to his time with Blackpool. I think this could be improved if he played in a two up front possibly with Cullen while Kukharevych is injured. When fit play him alongside the big man.
| Yates seems a lost man up front on 12:30 - Oct 26 with 1477 views | Dr_Winston | The thing is we've seen this before with plenty of strikers, going as far back at least as Jason Scotland. Players like Tammy Abraham, Bafe Gomis, Viktor Gyokeres and others. All criticised, no doubt labelled as "League one at best innit", all of whom thrived elsewhere when given decent service. It's obvious why Yates is having a tough time at present (although it bears repeating that he's scored the same number of goals as Vardy has, and only one fewer than Piroe, Whittaker, Iheanacho and Dewsbury-Hall), but we've got far too many people whose first instinct is to slag a player off rather than consider, even for a brief moment, whether there might be reasons for it. | |
