Not even in the same ball park compared to this obviously but I've been in the Alps a couple of times when the warning klaxon/siren has gone off to warn of a dam being released further upstream.
The point I'm making is in a narrow valley the speed at which an Alpine river can rise from a trickle to a raging torrent is astounding. That is a controlled managed gradual release - this was a sudden displacement of a glacier into a river effectively creating a tsunami effect with almost no time to get to higher ground. | |
