Moneyball (see previous thread) has been proven to show that statistics do help teams in their pursuit of success as it did with Northants in this years T20.
If you look at Moneyball, it doesn't say it's the be-all and end-all but that it helps. To me, anything that can give us a slight edge is a help and not to be sniffed at. |  | | |

I think it would help teams like us more than the big boys. If you are thinking of signing someone like Pogba or Toure, everyone knows their strengths and weaknesses.
If it's a less well known player, it's probably useful to see that his pass completion or tackles won, etc. is good when compared to the rest of his team or the league he's playing in. Obviously, it's just part of the decision making process. I expect it's easier in a sport like baseball or even cricket where you might want to select a player on a single attribute. |  | | |

Statistical analysis is a useful tool when looking at areas which can be improved or when buying players, but it is just one tool and needs to be used in the context of experience and broader knowledge of the game. | |

Baseball it works because each pitch is an individual event in it's own right, independent of other pitches.
Football is completely different from that, hell, moneyball doesn't work in American Football either. | |

I agree with you to a point but it's not all about the pitch itself, it's about RBI's and stolen bases.
Cricket looks at breaking games down into parts of matches, particularly T20, which has worked so well for a small club like Northants.
I don't think we should just dismiss the idea because it's American, which I guess would be the thing to do in the current situation we find ourselves in. | | | |
