Interesting stuff.

Walsh is unfortunately a bit of a joke these days.

I see the stance on Robert's contract has been scaled back from "Roberts was offered a contract" to now: "Discussions were had with his agent".

Nice write up.

To a certain degree Winter is p*ssing into the wind. No matter what he says or does there will be plenty who won't believe a word of it. Unfortunately there are a lot of people like Ian Walsh out there who simply cannot or will not see what is right in front of them.

The support now seems split between the realists and the fantasists.

Agree Dr, the current UK based club team (Winter, Allen etc) plus potentially Silverstein are focused on the club & want the team to be successful but only on a sustainable basis - I suspect further convertible loan funds will be appearing later this season to continue funding cash flow & to support RM in the Jan window, that said I accept that a percentage of our fan base will continually harp back to the ‘take us to the next level’ early post sale line & cannot get past that.

Ian Walsh is a fan friendly 'lightweight'. He played football for a few years probably invested quite well and has done nothing of note since. (30 years) No coaching no managing not even refereeing. A full time pundit. He is welcome to enlighten me on off the ball running, the benefits of playing wing backs or the need for a big man up front of course.

However if he ventures into the corporate governance of the club he is outside his comfort zone judging by his CV. Budgets investments ownership strategy into the club etc.

I would imagine the outline of a contract was discussed. It would be on the lines of.

Winter.
"We want to keep Connor but he needs to sign a new deal in the next few weeks as we need to finalise our 2021-2022 roster. We are prepared to offer £x,000 per week for a new 3 year contract".

"What to the you think?.

Agent " Connor was looking for £y,000 per week and a two year deal, There is some interest from Premier leagues teams he wants to explore".

Winter "Have a chat with Connor. we cannot pay £y,000 per week but we could find a bit more" We need something sorted by the end of the month. Give me Connor's bottom line figure"

An offer was made but not formalised which is the way it works.

Well, no.

To question stuff initially is fine, and as you say vital. To keep doing it well past the point that the question has been answered is not.

We still have people demanding to know "where the money has gone", when the published and audited accounts are freely available. To keep doing so despite that information being publi knowledge isn't vital, it's tedious and idiotic.

The next level stuff is for the fairies. It is designed for losers to be able to play the 'betrayal ' card. There was no next level after Monk got the team to 8th in the Premier league. Did fans anticipate Champions league every season and £300,000 a week footballers? The "next level" was not about 'outcomes'. "You promised me premier leagues not the championship" Nothing is guaranteed it a competition.

The next level actually means what we have here and now. The sellers pointed out that in the event of relegation they could not sort the club out financially with extra investment of hard cash. The 'next level' is the 'Convertible loan note'. This is, whether you like or not an injection of US cash into the accounts. Morgan / Jenkins etc could not do this.

Stoke city owe their owners £186m +. Swansea owe as far as I have read only the CLN (£5-10m?). They may not actually ask for this money back and instead buy newly issued shares which would be better for the club.

There is big money to be made if the club returns to the Premier league. Swansea was valued at £100m in 2016. Burnley was sold for double that in 2021 (£200m reported). Covid has happened and Premier league football carried on regardless. Some trimming here and there, but a real robust investment. Swansea playing dull Cooperball with a dodgey keeper? got to 90 minutes of the promised land.

It is all about the next level.
They can’t do it.
It is all very well to be sustainable but don’t bull fans into thinking there is any chance of playing at the top table. We will simply plod along with this crew.
We need to be sold and to whom is what it is all about.
I do not believe they have lost a cent with us and they have to have made money.

Our club can and should get back to the Prem
If someone doesn’t want that they I fail to see much in the way of fandome .Every fan wants success and it really is all about the glory.

Cooper had an £80,000 a week footballer at his disposal. Cooper did a great job but left as he felt he could not take the club forward with a reduced budget presumably.

Huw Jenkins explained the reasoning behind the sale and it has been proven accurate. The US owners had deeper pockets that the assorted previous owners than included Venture capitalists. The venture capitalists were always going to sell. Their initial investment was designed to profit from rapid growth and profit through sale. By 2015 growth had effectively stopped. It was then about consolidation. Profit by income was limited due to very high salaries that had to be paid to star players like Bony Llorente Sigurdson and Gomis.

Fans have been talking about a US holding "quick sale" for over 5 years. The "quick flip narrative". It was nonsense. The US people talk of being in the club for "the long term". The Welsh owners can speak for themselves but do not appear committed for the long term.

That's possibly how it happened.

But the club did state they offered him a contract. A claim denied by his girlfriend and now backed up by Winter's admission.

What question? Surely new questions constantly arise that need answering?

You're just talking about specific question there, one which I know some still ask (which I don't mind personally, keeps people on their toes). I was talking more in general.

What we are told by the owners/staff should always be scrutinized. Never get complacent.

Wow that's some spin.

We were told by the outgoing sellers and the incoming buyers after the sale went through (while we were a Premier League club and had a premier league squad) that it would take us to the next level& that the buyers had the resources to make us competitive.

Now you're trying to say what the next level actually meant is relegation & spending 3 seasons in the championship (with a squad of championship players and a downgraded academy).

As I explained the 'next level' referred to 'investment capability' not "outcomes".

Huw was quite honest and explained the selling shareholders did not have the capacity to keep the club in the Premier league indefinitely (like Everton for example) nor could they stop the club sinking down the leagues in the event of relegation. The US owners have injected apparently £10m of their own cash to stabilise the club in the championship.

The collapse of the transfer market for non elite players is another 'headwind' they have to deal with. Rodon was a very good piece of business in my view. From the outside the academy does not seem to be suffering too much from the downgrade.

Agreed, Doc, and excellent article, Keith.

I would have to agree with the article, when the owners came in and made some promises and grandiose statements it basically set them up for failure. They did a really poor job initially of handling the communications aspect, and I think much of that can be laid at the feet of Jenkins at this point. There have been legitimate questions about their commitment to the club and what their motives are since day one, but as time has passed they have seemingly answered a lot of them.

Maybe if we had stayed in the PL and moved into the top half of the table consistently they would have sold up by now, who knows. But we didn’t, they haven’t, and they have continuously spent significant sums of money, relative to our income, while bringing in knowledgeable and talented hands to lead the club. Potter was a master stroke, Cooper talked the talk and got the job and did okay with it in some ways, and Martin is another that I envision will be looked upon like Potter is. Martin is younger and less experienced, so will need more time and patience than Potter did, but he’s one of the true emerging managers in the game, and someone who fits our club to a tee.

Birch was never my favourite for a few reasons, but he did what he set out to do, stabilise the club financially at a sensitive moment in our history, and hindsight shows he did a more than capable job given the circumstances. Winter is another capable hand, someone who knows the EFL well, and he did a good job with Huddersfield, especially with his managerial hires of Wagner and Corberán. Levien and Kaplan have made long-term investments in the other teams they own, and have mostly done a pretty good job from what I have read.

Certainly can’t fault them for what happened this summer, they spent money, brought good players in on permanent deals and got us a really good manager that can take us through this transitional period and re-establish the possession and passing style of play that brought us our greatest successes. Hopefully, they have learned from their early mistakes and will continue to do right by our club.

The loan is convertible into shares within a 5 year window as I understand it. Mr Silverstein has told us that he is an "investor" not a supplier of credit. He said he is also in it for the long term and not a speculator looking for a quick buck. Based on this understanding he has been given a place on the board.

I therefore fully expect him to honour his word and not ask for the money and interest back and but buy new shares. This would clearly a good result for the club if it happens.

Having owners that could provide a contingency loan in a global crisis is very different to claiming we're going to the level. All the while in reality we're already a level lower from where they started.

Taken from the Guardian report in 2016.

""Levien has been assuring people they have substantial money and are not financing the deal with debt.""

""In meetings with the shareholders in Swansea last week, Levien is understood to have emphasised their plan is to develop the club but has not made firm promises that the consortium will invest new money of their own for signing players or expanding the stadium.""

In fact they do appear to be investing. £10m is not an insignificant amount in a time of crisis .

Strange quotes to bring up.

Because although they didn't necessarily borrow money to buy their shares, they have now ladened the club with debt from an outsider who's charging interest.

Well are they are certainly loaning at zero risk. It's a certainly a no risk investment for them.

But in my view this in no way represents the club being at a higher level than what it was prior to their share purchase.
