Imperial weights and measures have never gone away. Personally speaking, and this may well be an age thing, but I’ve only ever thought in terms of feet and inches, pounds and ounces, miles, pints gallons etc.. When presented with their metric equivalents I have real trouble visualising them and I suspect I’m far from alone in that on this site? Is this really news though? Call me an old cynic if you like but when this is coming from Westminster, clearly intended to generate headlines and column inches, I often assume it to be an attempt to bury other ‘real’ news.

No it's hand waving distraction. Conversely metric is easier for me-especially weight and volume. And particularly at the micro and nano levels we work at. I can visualise 10 or 100ml better than fluid ounces and can judge a kilogram better than pounds. But then they are also the SI units. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

He older generation have trouble with anything that isn’t old money. The kids are fine, and will continue to be fine so long as the older generation don’t keep effing things up for them.

Why don’t we just stay as we are. For the last 30 to 40 years our kids have been educated in metric, they are now used to those units and we propose to turn things back so us older folk can go back to what we used. Metric is the international measure, have both by all means but we shouldn’t throw out metric and revert to imperial.

Good post, even at my age I am used to metric now, there is no need to chuck a spanner in the works.
