If it were up to me I’d say it’s only racist if there’s malice behind it. Used to work with two blokes who were best friends (one was of Indian descent) and called each other all the racist names under the sun, but because there was genuine love between them it was just funny. Whereas if a stranger had walked up to them and used the same words it would be horrible.

Some words will always be racist, when white people say them anyway. Black people call each other the N word.

I played 3rd eleven cricket with a guy called Aftab. He and his brother owned a curry restaurant and take away called Curry King. We used to call Aftab the Curry King as he used to bring some cracking food along for tea. We had a few near incidents when people in the field used to shout " Great Bowling Curry King ".
Aftab's kids were in the same school as mine, we'd look after them for an hour or so after school and he'd bring us a takeaway to say thanks...magic! |  |

Banter between friends and colleagues can sound quite harsh to outsiders. If one person thinks it's banter but the target does not then the target has to speak up, or complain through official channels if too afraid or worried to speak up.
Banter can go too far, it can become bullying. Again, perception is all. I might think I'm saying something harmless but if it causes offence then I owe an apology. | |

In the case of FTONY it is homophobic and misogynist lyrics. Though I don't believe there was much outcry to change either 'f*gG*t'' or 'slut'. Shane Macgowan's lyrics are often gritty and written in a third person perspective. Homophobe or misogynist don't spring to mind. | | | |

I haven't called anyone a f@ggot either but I do like a f@ggot with mash and mushy peas, lots of gravy too.
