A lot of people haven't realised or ignored that covid is affecting younger people a lot more.

I see people saying why should the young obey the rules when the average age for a covid death is above 80, well maybe if we see young kids suffering they'll change their minds.

Teenagers have been on ventilators regularly in the last few months and now a 19 month old. Some people need to wake up to reality.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Interesting middle paragraph.

It’s almost as if someone has said “ we’ll make those pesky kids think again”.

Since the vaccines have come in all they’ve seemed to do is push the increased morbidity/mortality age down as the age groups above have been vaccinated.

Maybe that is the awful reality ?

I'm so sorry. I hadn't realised a 19 month old being seriously ill with covid was all part of the conspiracy.

PS, I also apologise for the blatant sarcasm.

Im glad you apologise for it - there’s no need for it. Im not saying there’s a conspiracy- I'm saying the serious effects are dropping down the age groups as the vaccine has moved down the age groups. That’s an observation. No more no less.

Ok. I'm not trying to be sarcastic now but, if kids are actually ending up in hospital and teenagers are going on ventilators, that suggests to me that maybe the newer variant is just doing what new viruses always do, trying to survive any way it can. Covid had hardly touched younger people, maybe it was inevitable.

Reflect on how young people act when out on the town or simply on the lash

I thought it was supposed to be inevitable that the more variants we got the more infectious and less dangerous they became.
COVID appears to be turning the old knowledge on it's head.

The was predicted. The risk was deemed worth it.

Either that or the so called experts knew less than they thought. I have always said that vaccines haven't eradicated diseases or improved mortality rates, improved living conditions over the years have done that. Common sense and discipline will do far more. Unfortunately, that's lacking in this country at the moment

Unfortunately better living conditions had nothing to do with it.

Even the rich and well of use to die of smallpox and polio.
Thankfully due vaccines these have been eliminated in all but two countries for polio. Living conditions in most third world countries have not improved but vaccines have reduced their deaths rates.

Biggest myth spouted by the antivaxers that it is not the vaccines that that have protected people

It's a combination of everything that made the improvements. Even the rich and well off can catch a virus. Improved conditions have undoubtedly saved lives. Try living in a slum house that's damp and mouldy, cold and draughty, you'll soon be ill.

Death rates in third world countries are higher than in Europe, they have a lot of kids and a lot die of hunger and disease, drinking tainted water causes many problems but we take clean drinking water for granted.

It's not either medical advances OR improved living conditions, it's both together.

You're last line is right though. Our mortality rates have improved since the vaccines but more importantly for most of us, the number of serious illnesses and hospitalisations has dropped a lot.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

You think, cleaner water, better sanitation, better diet, cleaner air had nothing to do with eradicating many diseases?

It can be seen clearly now, that vaccinations do not prevent the spread of diseases

Do not prevent 100% no but they do restrict the spread. Slow it down AND ensure most people are far less seriously ill when they do catch it.

It has led to some improvements of course but a lot of diseases are not water Bourne. Most virus are passed through the air .
Cholera and dysentery are water borne and were eradicated by improvements in the Victorian sewage and water systems.

Meanwhile smallpox, diphtheria, polio, mumps, Rubella, and measles were eradicated or reduced by vaccines and cervical cancer has also been virtually in the vaccinated young.

Eradicated. So not in any way similar to the Covid vaccines . I’m glad we can see eye to eye on something straw chewer.

You are both right.

Certainly up until the 1930s reductions in infant mortality in the UK were due to provision of clean water and sanitation. This is the simplest and single biggest intervention in reducing infection-related mortality by preventing waterborne diseases and those from faecal contamination. This has been greatly improved around the world in the last 30-40 years but diseases like typhoid, cholera and both bacterial and amoeba dysentry remain big problems in the developing world -more so in urban areas.

From WW2 improvements were more down to vaccines (whooping cough, diphtheria, measles etc) and there availability of antibiotics to treat bacterial infections. Others like TB are a combination of vaccines and pasteurisation of milk.

What is true is that modern pandemics and major emerging diseases are mainly viral and respiratory or vector borne. To an extent we are lucky this pandemic is just a coronavirus largely causing disease in more vulnerable groups (though far from exclusively) which is relatively invariant meaning rapid and successful vaccination, albeit with short term protection. Next time we may not be so lucky and we may see high mortality regardless of health status.

That's before we think about antimicrobial resistance and re-emergence of bacterial infections as a major cause of death.

And to add-it does not really look like SARS CoV2 has become more pathogenic in kids. Its more it becomes more clear when they are most susceptible (not vaccinated)and in an environment where transmission is easy (school).
