It’s time to shop a bit more local Russell Martin ‘The Swansea Way’ is right in front of you 29th Nov 2021 09:38
The news of Brandon Cooper signing a new deal at Swansea City was excellent to hear on the weekend. A defender who has impressed both the manager and Swansea City fans this season. With that agreement signed and sealed we think it’s time to look a bit more local if this season is to be one of transisition for the swans. 1

I agree, but since losing it's status the academy will struggle to produce the required level of players.

Thinking back to earlier games Cooper, in a favoured central role, had a very good game followed by a decent one and a couple of poor ones. Bennett and Cabango and light years ahead in the central CB position (currently owned by Naughton) and dare I say Rhys Williams, Manning and Late are better playing the fullback/centreback position Martin has persevered with despite not having the player to really nail the job.
The calle for Cooper to play IMO is similar to that of support for Cullen ... it would nice if it worked but probably won't.

Poll: Should the summer transfer window close before the season starts?

Fully expect at least one of Congreve, Lloyd and Cotterill to go beyond us as Rodon and Roberts have. The players didn't disappear when our status dropped from Cat 1 to Cat 2, and it's not like Cat 2 academies in the Championship don't routinely produce very good players (Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Sheff Utd have all been Cat 2 while bringing through big talents). There's a couple of good goalkeepers and one or two in midfield that could surprise in the next few years as well, even before we get to those recruited at u17s and 18+ professional level.

Dan Williams needs a loan, should have let him go in the summer. Not sure what offers were there, the lad was keen to go play. Ollie Cooper looks too good for League Two but should be left where he is this season, even though he'd fit Martin's system perfectly as one of the players behind the striker. Brandon needs games, also too good for League Two and did well for us in the early weeks despite having no preseason. Real shame he's been sidelined given the glowing reviews Martin was giving him in press conferences.

Was impressed with Congreve last time I watched U23 via stream.

Weird giving Cooper new deal when he doesn't seem anywhere near in Martin's plans at present. Not that I'm at all against giving him one btw, just weird timing.

I assume after that Williams performance Martin realised what he had at his disposal.

Big fan of Cooper, definitely see him as the future face of our defence like Rodon and Cabango are/were. Given the amount of time he’s had to train to understand the system let’s hope he’s ready to step up when called upon (which I can imagine is relatively soon)

Tend to agree, personally I’d like to see more of both Cooper & Williams - we are not going up this season & have enough to avoid relegation so unless we intend to offer Nauts, Bidders, Smith & Hamer new contracts it’s time we starting planning beyond next June.

Not really planning for the future if we’re starting other clubs’ players, is it?

EDIT: Disregard this, was thinking of Rhys instead of Dan.

I'm already on record for saying I'd rather see Cooper than Williams (and send Williams back) and I've also said a few times I'm not keen on loaning too many players because we should be giving our own a chance and not developing talent for EPL teams.

If we have talent in our U23's and academy we should give them a go, this is a transition season, seems like the perfect time to see what talent we have available before next season and before we buy any new players.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

.

Great thread, a proper test for the fickle with blind, uninformed faith.

- Williams ahead of Downes 'n Out (£1.5m+ ???), a no-brainer
- Cooper ahead of Williams, CB
- Cooper ahead of Downes 'n Out in the sweeper keeper role - far more solidly defensive without stupidly diving in, last grasp panic defending; more visionary with a proper out-ball lens

AC genuinely can't see that Downes is going to be a very good player. Definitely something personal as he tries to shoehorn him into every thread. He then wonders why no-one takes him seriously because he obviously has an agenda, even if he won't admit it, it's so obvious. But we are the dull ones apparently.
