Britain got it wrong with covid: long lockdown did more harm than good 08:28 - Jan 4 with 1517 views73__73

Says scientist Mark Woodhouse.
We did serious harm to our children and young adults who were robbed of their education, jobs and normal existence, as well as suffering damage to their future prospects.

You don’t have to be an epidemiologist to realise that lockdowns are a huge mistake.

Lockdowns were vital to keep deaths down until the vaccinations came along . Now despite record cases deaths are very low and lockdowns are not needed.

And what figures do you have for the collateral damage ie deaths that the lockdowns caused ?

We were in a no win situation, whatever we did it would have caused problems somewhere. Even the most ardent supporter of lockdowns on here has (I believe) criticised things the governments have done at some point. We were facing a situation not seen in 100 years and hopefully the "experts" will have learned a lot from this going forward.

As an afterthhought, I think my sons development has been harmed just as much and maybe more by Xbox/Playstation and the Internet than by lockdowns.

He and his friends rarely go outside besides school and that was true before covid. Speaking to other parents this seems pretty much the norm for teenagers today. Much more time is spent cooped up in their bedrooms than my generation ever did and there's only the "internet" to blame because without online gaming/contact they would be so bored they do like we did, take a ball out, get their cycles out, go and do something less boring instead OR...WDYJTOTTAGADSLBI! Who remembers "Why don't you"?

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Lockdowns were important very early on and arguably last autumn. They were kept in place far, far too long last summer and are largely pointless now.

I personally agree and empathise with your words.

My son has pretty much returned to his shell and while we had hope for his university broadening his horizons, the lockdown has knocked his confidence for six. Online lectures are something he has struggled and did quite badly in his second year and has he faces his last big term, I worry for him.

He decided not to live in halls and the lockdown started at the worst time.

I do, however think they were necessary as our hospitals were screeching to a halt. Things have got awful again.

Lots of good points and as a parent of a teenager and a twenty something year old I totally get whether Catullus and Jack Lord are coming from, it’s very similar here.

Lockdowns were necessary because our infrastructure, medical services, public health have been run down for many years and weren't ready for a pandemic, look at the fiasco that is/was track and trace. We also have a country which seems to have disproportionate number retins amongst its population, people who think the rules didn’t apply to them.

I agree. They were both called too late which prolonged them needlessly. If we had a Delta virulence with Omicron transmission we would have to think again. Hopefully the level of immunity will now lead towards fewer restrictions this year.

Of course lockdowns worked. Cases were markedly down when they were in place and increased when they were lifted. They worked in 1918 when there was no vaccine and they have worked now

They worked in 2020 when there wasn't a vaccine as well.

Governmental choices, in Wales particularly, also prolonged them needlessly.

We can argue back and fore about whether the initial lockdown was too late. Personally I don't think it made an awful lot of difference in the long run as successive variants made it through (and a NZ style quarantine was unworkable in the UK), but no doubt a strong case can be made against that belief.

I won't be swayed from the belief that Drakeford dithered far too long over releasing restrictions in Wales though, nor the utterly idiotic nature of some of them. For example, I will probably go to my grave not understanding how the hell someone in power decided that the best way to combat a virus known to be much more spreadable indoors was to limit the time people spent outside.

That last sentence, 100% agree. They shut our local park and made us walk on pavements which inevitably meant having to get closer to people or walk on the roads. Drakers should have insisted on parks staying open.
Even now, without the restrictions, I walk my dog and ty to keep 3-4 feet away from other dog walkers, even my friends.
Like I said, many of us disagreed with the handling at some point.

Correct some of Drakeford's dictaks defy common sense.

Some of his masterpieces during the pandemic

Allowing pubs to stay open but not sell alcohol.

Stores were ordered to cordon off non essential goods
This meant in the winter floods and snow it was illegal to buy wellies and coats for children but could buy cheese and bananas.

He also banned travel to work without reasonable justification but allowed trips to pubs and supermarkets.

He banned people from park runs or attending outdoor sports but allowed everyone to rush to indoor sales in shops in supermarkets even those without vaccine passports.

You could play bowls or golf but not tennis.

He didn't want to rush the vaccine because vaccinators would be standing around with nothing to do.

Allowing non-essential items to be sold in super markets days before non-essential items could be sold in specilaity stores, which completely negated his reasons for introducing the ban in the first place.

Opening society back up completely after a firebreak lockdown even though infection rates were higher than when the firebreak was needed.

You can watch live sport from inside a bar with 139 other people as there were already 50 people watching around the pitch. 51 people outside is too dangerous. He claimed this was the clubs fault.

Apart from the last one he was re-elected after introducing those rules.

Anybody that thinks lockdown's do or did work are absolutely barking mad, as dull as the idiot in charge Bumbling Boris.
Thousands and thousands of lives lost to suicide, undiagnosed illness. illness brought on as a result of lockdown. mental illness has gone through the roof and the future for our kids have taken a massive knock for a multitude of reasons.
In years to come you will realise what absolute abhorrent mess this shambles of the last 2 years will turn out to be and how wrong a lot of people on this thread are.

No I didn't.

Besides which, Scotia's comment doesn't say the lockdown doesn't work, it criticises for not making it longer, basically. he opened things back up when he should have extended the lockdown

The situation is different now, with the vaccines. We don't need the harsh restrictions though we still need people to be careful, and get jabbed/boosted.

Sorry cat, wrong poster.
A firebreak is still a lockdown and the cases rose, they didn't even stay the same, let alone go down.
Where is the evidence that Welsh and Scots longer lockdown periods produced lower rates than England?
