'Ukraine is a red line for us, we will not accept them joining NATO or the EU...two organisations that have declared we can't join, have frozen us out and therefore (we have concluded) means us harm'
On the other side of the table (with the exception of Trump) we have had people, in essence, responding;
'F*ck you we will do what we want'
Now those same people act surprised when it has come to this.
Putin doesn't want to invade and occupy the Ukraine, it will cost him a fortune and probably see the end of his reign. Russia is poor.
At any point we could have ended this by reassuring Russia about their concerns...the fact that we haven't indicate that people on our side wanted this war.
These people are reckless, there is no telling what Putin will do if he gets sucked into a confrontation with NATO, he has a lot of nuclear weapons.
....and this high stakes game we have been playing, that risks destruction here and across Europe, is for what?

Ukraine joining the EU.
The ramping up of pressure on Putin.
