| January transfer window management master class. 15:37 - Apr 21 with 1742 views | ReslovenSwan1 | The January transfer window was cited as being a bit of a disaster. Called a "fiasco" and "showing the US owners in their true light". "Letting down Martin with no backing". This is the media and forum narrative. I propose a different perspective. In fact the January window was the making of Russel Martin (football manager) There was always something not quite there about Martin and his "brave young men" in season one. Patchy form, internal disputes, issues of discipline both on and off the field. At least one bad egg has been removed. They were fragile and still might be. Remember all those draws and losses from winning positions due to a weak football mentality. 3-0 up against AFC Bournemouth not much different to the team in the Premier league who beat Spurs last week. I put it to you fellow forumers that Levien and co told Martin to up his game and concentrate on matters football, his coaching, tactics and the physicality of his team to be able to compete here and now in the Championship. Transfer windows are irrelevant. No new signings meant a) Walsh returning. He has been great. A surprise to many. b) Patterson getting time on the pitch with his "issues" sorted once and for all c) Opportunities for Cullen and Cooper. d) Potential opportunities for Whittaker to either play or get onside with the club ethos. e) Lightweight loan signings ditched. f) Added height and strength to the defence in Darling at full back. Martin had to be forced to improvise within a tight d budget and stop winging about not spending the owners money unnecessarily. They have been right royally 'soaked' by the club recruitment people in the past. Clucas anyone?. even Potter signed Barry McKay. Fisher was looking another dud too but even he has shaped up by force of necessity. Levien in his kitchen in District of Columbia does not do whinging. "Where is my Swansea top honey I have to do a pod cast with Jake and the Limeys". Key and Ogbene worth £2-3m in January are still not nabbed for ziltch. The forum owner of this site stated he believed the Grant business was a bit of deflection. All part of the excellent work of Levien. I am not expecting a massive summer like Russell. It is not required. A new deal for Piroe Wood and 3-4 new players will for do the job. Benda is coming back Walsh can hopefully stay fit. Rushesha Congreve and Abdullai to step. Key to come in with 2 or 3 prospects. Manning Whittaker? , Ogbeta out and pruning of the u21 squad that could not beat Barnsley last week. Grimes, Allen, Fulton Cabango Darling two new fullbacks with Cooper Cullen will be the core of a good solid side. "Keep up the good work and concentrate of coaching not transfer windows". This is what Brendan did. He eased out Beattie and Kuqi ("great people") and f brought in quality in Sinclair and Borini who were surgical finishers. No one thought Tate, Monk, Rangel, Gower and Taylor were Premier league footballers back in 2010. Now after 5 wins and a draw Silverstein and Levien can reflect on a job well done. They also know they will get no credit for it as non Hollywood "Yanks". [Post edited 21 Apr 2023 16:17]

| January transfer window management master class. on 16:00 - Apr 21 with 1654 views | Dr_Parnassus | Not by me. I said January was a blessing in disguise, even in January. The players being chased by the management team were poor and bad fits which only looked to solidify (in terms of implementation not execution) an already failing system. This was epitomised by Grant who would have been a disaster signing and clubs highest paid player. I still shudder to think of Ogbene being forced to play wing back without being allowed to take anyone on. Had we brought in the players named, I doubt we would have finished the season strongly and actually think we would be bang in trouble. Grant was a very real target sourced and arranged through one of the staff, it was all but done but scuppered because Chelsea pulled out of the Omari Hutchinson deal to WBA, so they put the block on it in the 11th hour (actually more like the 12th). Russell had to realise that his methods were madness and January did that, and we didn’t waste more money in the process either which is key to a club like us. He was forced to stop his nonsense with Pato and bring him back who is a key player for us regardless of what some may think. Russ was addicted to his ideas despite them harming the club. January would have been akin to giving an addict more drugs, he may have felt comforted in the short term but it would only have fuelled his addiction to that way of playing. He’s been forced to go cold turkey and look for solutions. | |

For me and from the people I spoke to as that deal collapsed (Grant) he was highly unlikely to sign, that’s why we remained interested. Two agents advising on both sides of the negotiations knew as well.

A good bit of PR work perhaps?. It is a field where the US people have been well and truly mugged on forums by people in the shadows of the foggy streets of the lower Tawe valley. Things are clearer in the Nedd Valley due to the cleaner air presence of trees an higher altitude. A simpler lifestyle is often mistakenly classified as backward by the misguided. It is good to see the club cash benefactors taking care of these things having handed the narrative to dim number crunchers and school teachers. They have been characterised as "voracious money grabbing hedge funding Yankees". It was a fake.

I back the club, the owners , the chairman the backroom staff the players and the tea person. I back Martin for his honesty and hard graft since January since when he has gone "all in" after a reported period of reflection. His only other alternative was to quit like Cooper did. Martin still has some way to go by backing the ownership 100% who pay his wages and forget about keeping the fans happy. The fans will be happy with wins goals and clean sheets. Being called a 'Yankee poodle' is not so bad. The US owners parked a tank on his lawn and he has been forced to adapt and improvise and is a lot better manager for the experience. The results are clear to be seen. Martin has moved. He should thank Winter and Levien for their insight. I am opinionated that is true. It is free speech and good in a democratic society. I will get called a "jerk" of course. It is just the way crowds behave.

You're quite happy to call others whatever you like, yet get very sensitive when you here the banter chant that gets chanted though. "I back the club, the owners , the chairman the backroom staff the players and the tea person. I've no issue at all with that, the issue I got is you posting your opinion of fans because their views differ to your's.

Ethnic slurs / racism. I am zero tolerance. Talk the talk and walk the walk. The club claims zero tolerance but doe not enforce it. I noticed the other day the "zero tolerance" line had been dropped. Watch this space.

| January transfer window management master class. on 21:44 - Apr 21 with 1320 views | Dr_Winston | The January transfer window is being blamed for a run of mostly awful performances that began almost two months before it opened. It's absurd how many people are defending Russy from things that are almost entirely his fault because they hate other people more. Like someone else said earlier, it's a hell of a coincidence that the players are now "getting the process" since we moved to a back four with actual attacking intent in midfield rather than in previous months where we did neither. | |

| January transfer window management master class. on 07:46 - Apr 22 with 1170 views | RichardO | The transfer market in January seems to be a bit of a last resort looking like a quick fix, bit like relying on loan players to build a team around. If the team continues to keeps up the good run and at the very least look competitive at this level for rest of this season we may be a more desirable destination for quality players and maybe encourage players to extend or renew their contracts. Careful planning for the summer transfer window and acting early getting new signing or intergrating developed returning loanees back into the squad were we need it, so we can hit the ground running. The better shape we are in at the start of the season may well dictate who will leave and if any more quality players arrive before the window closes. Call me cynical but is the upturn of performances the result of players upping their game to raise their profile and strengthen their contract positions and not just solely down the change in formation or setup. With respect to Cundle as a loaned player he has worked hard and played well this season and should be applauded for his contribution and I would be happy if he was signed or returned for a second year as we would know what we would be getting as he has been an able squad member at this level given his young age, the return of Walsh has increased the strength of the squad but we would need to cover him within the squad as he returns to full fitness so Cundle may be a good choice especially if he also can press on with him development and we can get him at a reasonable price. Not looking to splash cash that we don't have but looking to bring in players who have skill sets that we need, experienced or younger players who fit the teams requirement. | | | |
| January transfer window management master class. on 08:40 - Apr 22 with 1109 views | Dr_Winston | Cundle hasn't been much use at all if we're being honest. One goal and two assists all season from an attacking position. His current absence from the side certainly isn't hurting our performances. | |

Not in the formation and setup he has been used in very much like a lot of players in the squad and in the team recently, when used correctly he was part of the team that went on a mini good run early in the season. Opinions differ about players he young maybe a bit too similar to a number of players we already have at the moment.

He works hard, I'll give him that, but there's not an awful lot of quality there. At least nothing that he's shown us this season. He may kick on at some point in his career but he's not a player I'd be rushing to bring back for next year.

Could do with Walshy back, been a breath of fresh air in the middle of the park since he been fit, just a massive shame that he's suffered yet another knock back, I feel for him he must been frustrated as hell, but fair play it doesn't show when he does get on the pitch.

Unfortunately some players are just fragile. As easy as it is for the blowhards to blame the players themselves for getting injured regularly as if it's something that they enjoy doing, it's just a reality that some are just not as robust as others. On the flip side you've got people like Ashley Williams or Matt Grimes who are effectively unbreakable.

Got to learn to protect yourself but you can't account some injuries.
