There's a few images floating around , not something you want to see .How sad that something which brings pleasure to many has a tragic outcome RIP

Heard this on the news today. Absolutely awful. Hate to see players of any sport badly injured or worse. I really think out of respect for the player who lost his life, his family and friends any graphic images should never be displayed in any form of media. So sad for this young man family and the poor other player involved.

Played Ice hockey all over the UK in the lower British leagues and Rec for over 20 years and it's sickening to read of this terrible tragedy.

Normally a players skate would only be anywhere near another players head or neck if the affected player was falling or the other player had been checked causing his legs and body to be raised up to a much higher than normal height.

The skate blades which have two sharp edges on either boot are often sharpened before the game by the better players whilst poorer skating strappers such as myself wouldn't have them sharpened for weeks as sharper edges would be more likely to catch on the ice than duller edges although they'd still be fairly damaging if catching someone anywhere on the body I suppose.

You could certainly nick your finger if you ran it along a skate blade that had been sharpened in the last couple of weeks.

Whilst hockey players do wear a fair bit of protection there are plenty of fairly exposed areas on the body not covered.

Most of the protection consists of fairly minimal padding and thin plastic strips or cups to protect vulnerable chest, shins, elbows, knees or shoulder points against the puck or getting smashed into the boards or ice rather than thick michelin man type padding that many people think is the case.

I'm too sickened to watch the incident on the various sites online that apparently are showing it, I still remember seeing the Buffalo Sabres net minder who almost died a few years ago after being caught in the neck by a skate blade it was pretty horrific and he only survived because a top surgeon was watching in the crowd and dashed to help.

I seem to recall that one of the medics assisting at the game was ex forces with battlefield experience of similar horrendous injuries as well which helped.

I still can't believe that the netminders didn't even use face masks until well into the 1960's.

I started wearing one after seeing a guys eye socket just about explode after being hit by a puck in the warm up before a game ( pucks can travel 100mph plus ) but it didn't occur to me to use a neck guard, in fact I'd never even heard or seen such a piece of equipment for outfield players and can't remember ever seeing anyone wearing such a thing when I was playing.

What a terrible terrible accident.

My sincere condolences to his family and friends

K
Interesting and salutary post which shows how tough this sport is .
We were lucky to catch a game at the centre Bell a few years ago .
Beyond belief really but a Quebecois spoke to us and helped us with the rules .
Amazing really for such “ difficult” denizens

I’ve unfortunately seen the incident and although I know nothing about ice hockey, it looked like a very unfortunate accident. I won’t be looking at it again to confirm my thoughts though.

Maybe, as I said I won’t look at it again but it happened so fast, the guy arrested seemed to be catapulted into the air.

Of course if CPS allow them to press charges they’ll believe there is enough evidence from the clip to get a result. I wonder if there is some history between the two that has been brought to light?

Not seen it don't want to see it. . Manslaughter that's a big call...could create a precedent in the sporting world. Many sports are potentially dangerous, it's easy sometimes to slow a clash down but in real time it can be very different.

The following day on American television a coach said, he obviously didn't set out to kill him, but he did intend to foul him

I’m certain the manslaughter isn’t corporate, so their will be some evidence and the police state they have spoken to what they describe as ‘specialists’ obviously even though this isn’t sub judicata just yet, but if people wish to comment please be mindful.

If a charge of manslaughter goes ahead, one wonders what might happen in sports such as rugby. Although it is rare I believe there have been fatalities. Also culpability for life-changing injuries could become an issue.

P.S. The question of what happens in rugby prompted me to do a quick search and I see there was a 1994 case, where a defendant was found not guilty of manslaughter.
