Swansea City : It isn’t just the players, there’s learning to be done 19th Apr 2026 13:52
Swansea City again fell to second half tactics which are now becoming a little for than frustrating due to their continual use by head coach, Vitor Matos. This of course wasn’t the only reason why the Swans let a lead slip yesterday against Southampton. 0

Deep breath taken, click above.

Pretty much as I see it
Vitor was a breath of fresh air and he got us , or me, rather excited about the future but now I have reservations
Sideways backwards slowly are things that have killed is with other coaches
We can attack and finish but too often bottle it and go into a shell
Our loan signings have been appalling , let’s be honest and Casey returning was significant
I just hope Vitor isn’t another just full of words meant for media consumption

Poll: Christmas. Enjoyable or not

Sometimes you have to credit the opposition. Charles for Downes completely changed the midfield impetus for Southampton and the match. Yes we sat deep but we were pushed there in my opinion.

Apparently Downes was shouting obsceneties in the tunnel as the players went off at half time. Any manager worth their salt would have hooked him. Went against us though.

Boscombe Downes ?

Here we go.
Flynn Downes made 2,460 passes for Swansea with a near 93% success rate.

Who else would you have as the manager, for me players have improved, some like Eom have regained that spark he had just before he got injured last season and add to that he is physically stronger, does Eom have his weaknesses yes but we are not seeing them as often, Widell is coming along leaps and bounds Stamenic while not quite the player we want him to be is also coming along nicely, loan players like Casey , Nunes, Yalcouye and Casey are young and likely to make mistakes, would be more than happy to have Casey back as a loanee or even as a permenant signing.
The inexperience of young players in our squad including those loans was significant at the start of the season as we come close to the end a few additions and return of injured players should be something to look forward to, Matos has got a number of players playing to their potential able to work well with the movement of the players on and on the ball to create space.

Matos is fine, he will get ten games next season and be judged on that for me.

We did however take Widell off who was doing a stellar job of pushing forward.

I don't so much think it was a tactical choice to sit deep and defend for 45 minutes, but some of Matos's decisions, especially around team selection and substitutions are fair game for debate given the result of them was Southampton gaining even more possession/territory.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

"Cameron Burgess placed his defence in a number of perilous moments yesterday"

So did Cabango, yet he seems to be skating free of criticism again.

They have so much strength in depth though. They made 6 changes from mid-week and took their time to adapt in the first half. Their bench makes the team better.
More puzzling were the Swansea substitutions. It seems we took off our best players in Parker and Widdell. Then Nunes for Cullen added nothing. Maybe just Yalcouye for Cullen would have done the job.

Spot on it wasn't a case of us dropping deeper we were forced back by a good side and that was a stonewall penalty we were denied

Indeed, it seems most of the criticism is just a fashion statement. It became fashionable to knock Vipi last season as Cullen was top scorer. It became fashionable to knock Josh Key, even though we look lost without him. Both Southampton goals were crosses from their left flank. Nothing is said about our reserve right-back.
We actually commented in the game about Cabango just after he gave the ball away cheaply to Stewart. Maybe if he had scored rather than ballooning it high, wide and not very handsome, we may have got a reality check on Cabango. However it is always Burgess who gets stick.
Add in a stopper who needlessly gives away a corner for their first goal, as well as passes out to defenders under pressure. Otherwise, it's a long kick to touch. Again, it's fashionable to say how well he's playing, when he's not. He's another above criticism.

We’ve looked through the full game (or should I say Liam has) Cabango made one error in passing, Burgess gave the ball away four times leading to opportunities for the opposition to score. Huge difference. Burgess has had some very positive feedback over the last three games on this website at least.

In no way have we ever singled out any Swans player, Burgess is pretty poor with the ball at his feet and four times yesterday he put in the opposition to gain two corners and two wing attacks. I’ve had a look I don’t see Cabango playing in any way as poor as that.

I can point you to nine matches where he has been ranked 6 or below all with criticism of Cabango.
And a number applauding Burgess. Our view is based on one game.

They started the second half for the first ten minutes knobbing around with the ball in their usual incompetent way. Thats the frame of mind they went out with for the second half. Somebody changed it.

I think I’m more than in a position to state very clearly that this website provides a service that isn’t based on everyone else’s opinion. There is no other Swansea website out there that applies hours of work to bring a free product whilst in the same time supporting a charity.

We don’t do fashionable football writing, and it’s an insult to insinuate it. Your opinion is merely generic without any specific evidence to back up what you say. If a player gets it then they get it. Me nor our team bow down to anyone. Names included too. It’s how we see it. I think it’s about time a few on here started to see the positives instead of seeing constant negatives.

BTW I agreed totally with your Vigouroux assessment. Many didn’t but we stopped a pile on before it started. I have a great memory 😉

Swansea websites are about to become a premium, including this one. Trust me, the future isn’t rosey.

Directly gave the ball away? I can believe he only did it once. Dithered and got caught in possession? Failed to clear when clearing was the better option and instead played a stupid ball that put us under pressure? He did both of those at least once too.

Neither of them are any good on the ball. Both limit us, both offer opposing teams opportunities. One of them gets lambasted for it. The other rarely does. That's within the fanbase in general rather than just here mind.

Read our last six reports, you will see plenty given out. And yes I totally agree the pair of them are not matching up, and if we retain them as stated in the report we won’t see much success next season.

Trust me I agree with you on Cabango, but he is being overshadowed by Burgess who really isn’t doing this Swansea team any favours.

Maybe if we push the Adam Worth narrative that he brought in Matos (he did) then possibly the head coach will start getting stick too ?

Maybe I'm reading the wrong book or wrong forum. My assessment of this team is simple

- Burgess (Poor With Passing) and needs replacing

- Matos (Needs a Pre Season) - He has practically changed the way we play mid season with a team with lowest shots on goal and a whole lot of stats. I think he has been handicapped by poor wingers and RB.

Does he go a bit defensive instead of killer instinct. Maybe. But it was clear Franco and Co was wiped out. I'm sure Key would of come on for Parker than Ward if he was available. And Matos was looking to add experience in that period of the game.

Excuses aside, I just don't think we can go through another let's see where we are 10 games next season and review (though the club will of course) I won't be unless we are dire. This needs to be a longer appointment.

He's had almost a full season, and results haven't matched expectations. Very inconsistent, I see no real improvement
