Swansea City : It isn’t just the players, there’s learning to be done 19th Apr 2026 13:52
Swansea City again fell to second half tactics which are now becoming a little for than frustrating due to their continual use by head coach, Vitor Matos. This of course wasn’t the only reason why the Swans let a lead slip yesterday against Southampton. 0

Maybe I'm reading the wrong book or wrong forum. My assessment of this team is simple

- Burgess (Poor With Passing) and needs replacing

- Matos (Needs a Pre Season) - He has practically changed the way we play mid season with a team with lowest shots on goal and a whole lot of stats. I think he has been handicapped by poor wingers and RB.

Does he go a bit defensive instead of killer instinct. Maybe. But it was clear Franco and Co was wiped out. I'm sure Key would of come on for Parker than Ward if he was available. And Matos was looking to add experience in that period of the game.

Excuses aside, I just don't think we can go through another let's see where we are 10 games next season and review (though the club will of course) I won't be unless we are dire. This needs to be a longer appointment.

I would like to see Matos stay with us for the long term ( by our standards).
He has a lot to offer in my opinion but he is still on a steep learning curve.
The first half against Southampton was streets ahead of our Middlesborough performance as we went on the front foot.
The 2nd half against Southampton and 1 nil up we reverted very quickly to going on to the back foot.
Negative substitutions and trying to defend a slim lead against very good opposition was only going to end up one way.
We have a free hit on Tuesday against QPR.
I would like to see Matos throw caution to the wind and play all the players who could figure in his plans next season and play with positivity from start to finish.

Burgess was brought in for the fact we needed a centre half and we needed experience, when Burgess does the things he can great, his delivery out to the left hand side is good because he is a left footer and the ball is delivered quickly and precisely much better than Darling or Cabango trying to get the ball out to the left hand side and better than both defensively on the left but get him playing balls into the middle or across to the right and defending on the right he has the same problems that Cabango and Darling have or had on the left, bad passing and own goals, top centre halves can play on both sides of the defence and they should be taught to improve themselves very early on in their careers it is a bit late for Burgess and maybe even Cabango it was why Casey looked good his assurance on the ball to make the right decisions defensively, did he make youthful mistakes of course he did that was why he was loaned out.

Matos came here not knowing what the squad of players could do and more or less reverted back to the team Sheehan had at the end of last season as far as possible, Sheehan tired or was expected to integrate the new players into the team and basically we fell apart. Sheehan tried to getting our full backs forward too soon leaving our wing exposed. Matos made those fullbacks sit deeper letting them do their defensive job first and foremost but allowing them to get forward as we press higher as a team.

Vipotnik even under Sheehan this year had improved.

Under Matos with the tighter defence positve results came but we have struggled when teams look to attack us usually seen away from home or against better teams we either sit too deep at times when we attack leaving space in the middle of the park instead of the defence stepping up with the attack.
Frightened of the break away? If midfielders cover for our fullback runs forward we shouldn't be, Cabango and Burgess both can get a good speed up and it is a long run for forwards with the ball at their feet from the half way line and the goalie should cover a long ball but midfielders need to be aware defensive cover is need and not commit to the attack on mass.

I think Matos has done well especially hamperd by the injuries to players but maybe in the long run those injuries have helped or allowed Matos to get a better picture of the squad players capabilities so show in what areas or the squad will need strengthening the most.

Hopefully Matos can gain the experience and pass it onto the players in a positive way before he goes and doesn't feel the need to jump ship for whatever reason like Potter or Cooper and even Martin, with the belief in his abilities and methods to build a successful team with the Swans. .

Maybe it’s a Portuguese thing
Sousa used to play the same way ,score first and try and shut the game down , we won many games that way by the odd goal
Matos has to learn, the best form of defence is attacking , plus we look a much better side when we go forward, this deep defending just creates stress in the crowd and panic in our box
Here’s hoping he can learn

I am enjoying the football under Matos more than I have for a while, the football under Sousa bored me senseless.

It was a Russell Martin & Luke Williams thing too. Maybe it's just a modern tactical thought thing?

Either way I hate it.

It's an odd one certainly; Matos was part of Klopp's team and I never saw Liverpool playing negatively.

Is it a club diktat? Made in the mistaken belief that it's somehow what we fans want to see?

Who else would you have as the manager, for me players have improved, some like Eom have regained that spark he had just before he got injured last season and add to that he is physically stronger, does Eom have his weaknesses yes but we are not seeing them as often, Widell is coming along leaps and bounds Stamenic while not quite the player we want him to be is also coming along nicely, loan players like Casey , Nunes, Yalcouye and Casey are young and likely to make mistakes, would be more than happy to have Casey back as a loanee or even as a permenant signing.
The inexperience of young players in our squad including those loans was significant at the start of the season as we come close to the end a few additions and return of injured players should be something to look forward to, Matos has got a number of players playing to their potential able to work well with the movement of the players on and on the ball to create space.

Matos appointment has 100% been a positive one and IMO he has provided stability whilst achieving improvements in results with a bang average squad (with the exception of a few).

The real challenge comes next season when he has to find a way forward and build a more competitive and balanced team which requires IMO:

* An experienced no nonsense defender who can dominate our box and add value at set pieces the other end too, the dynamic of 2 ball playing CB's does not work for us in the current system. Either change the system or players, something clearly needs to change.
* Creativity in midfield - we are crying out for someone who can take the ball forward and break the lines, for me we have 3/4 players who are all exactly the same currently in the centre of the pitch which is why we go backwards and sideways.
* Pace - We have to find players who have real pace to cause problems on the counter more often, we are a one dimensional team at the moment and easy to set up against.
* Loan Strategy - Only bring in players that can add value to the first X1, you can bring players up from the academy to support squad strength so use the loan market more effectively.
* Tactics - The teams finding success this year are playing a far more direct game and have players with pace across key positions. Unless Matos can evolve the current style of play to make us a more copetitive team then the reality is his future will be based on who he brings in, the board have to back him in this respect or we will have another season of mediocrity.

For me, Matos on the evidence of what I have seen so far whilst not perfect is worth backing. The phrase 'you cant polish a turd' comes to mind for a few of our current players so best to wave these goodbye and rebuild.

A lot of teams now employ it.
Martinez too.

It’s all well and good doing so, it’s being good at it and quick to make it work that most teams don’t do.

There’s a few people out there who don’t seem to be able to read and understand the positivity there is with regards to Matos but then can’t decipher the breakdown of what we see on the pitch currently.

Nor have they the gonads to come on here and have a discussion about it.

Thick as.

Interesting comments today from Capello about England's tendency to go ahead in games and then switch off and play with fear.

I think there's been a lot of that in recent years with ourselves and maybe it's psychological rather than tactical.

I really like Matos and trust him to iron out these flaws and frailties over time and I think it's easy to forget he's only been here a little under 5 months
