Trumps argument is that the USA is paying for every thing and he wants to cut back in illegal immigrants NATO Ukraine support and supporting global institutions like the UN and WHO.
He only assessed the money OUT not the money IN. Tariiffs area way of taxing Americans at a time of horrendous balance if payment data. Effectively it is a tax on the wealthy which European Governments cannot pull off.

Meloni is in a fortunate position in that she has the collective strength of the EU behind her and if Trump wants to “punish” her he’ll have the fallout from all the others to contend with. Whereas, we’re on our win - if Starmer pushes back we’ve got nothing behind us to fight back with. Any pushback is likely to cause trade difficulties and potentially cost a lot of jobs and cause a lot of pain.
TBF to Starmer he did push back when the US initially asked to use the U.K. in their Gulf conflict and he pushed back about being dragged in, that’s ,ore than we saw from Farage or Badenoch until they saw which way public opinion was blowing. | | | |

Meloni has made the point that her promoting Trump is not good for her or Italy and Italians dislike Trump greatly.
