A great actor, but for me, the only weak link in this otherwise superb crime drama. Episode three has to be the most emotionally gripping 50 minutes of TV I've watched in a very long time.

Curse you, spelling prompt!! I’ve just seen episode 3, you’re right, it was excellent. I thought it had all been a bit cut and paste Gomorrah/Animal Kingdom-on-the-Liffey up to then, but this was another level.
It is amazing how many Irish actors were in Game of Thrones. I was watching an Irish language film set in the Famine called Arracht (Monster), very dark in every sense. Just seen Maestro on Netflix. All the attention has been on Bradley Cooper and his rubber nose, but Carey Mulligan is fantastic, very reminiscent of Juliet Stevenson. Nice chunk of Mahler’s 2nd too.

The Gold a tv drama series about the Brink's-Mat robbery is superb Its on BBC i player and stars Hugh Bonneville.I know it was mentioned on this thread a while back but its worth another plug in case anyone has missed it like i nearly did.

Post Emmys - Mrs Chef decided we should watch The Bear. Watched the first episode last night; I wouldn't exactly say it's a comedy (maybe it gets funnier?) but caught the attention and I like its gritty style. Also playing Animal by Pearl Jam over the end credits was a winner.
Anyone else watched it? Worth sticking with? |  |

I enjoyed it, highly improbable but with a nice twist at the end. Though I had to look online and as it turns out I wasn't the only confused one.

Lots of characters grow in front of your eyes, issues get resolved, the story gathers momentum. Some episodes concentrate on just one character or one event. It really works. There have been several recommendations for the excellent Kin on BBC but I don’t know if anyone has so far mentioned another Irish gangster series called Love/Hate which was on about ten years ago in Ireland and is available on ITVX.
I would imagine our Irish contributors will probably have seen it but I hadn’t so far and we went through all 5 series in double quick time over Christmas and New Year. It’s like a Dublin set version of the Sopranos or Gomorrah, with elements of The Wire thrown in for the last 2 series. Absolutely gripping and some of the acting, especially by Tom Vaughn-Lawlor as Nidge and Charlie Murphy as Siobhan is very good indeed. | | | |

They’ve managed to keep it going with 2 seasons to follow of Bosch Legacy - no plot spoilers other than standards are maintained.
Think latest iteration of True Detective with Jodie Foster looks good and if want couple of hours of outback Aussie true crime with very odd cast of characters check out Last Stop Larrimah on Netflix |  | | |

I got about half way through episode 2 last night, but I found it irritating and improbable. Not sure I'll go back.
On the latter subject, I was watching The Deuce which is back on Sky and which I missed first time round. It's only about five years old but it looks like it came from another age, I can't believe it would be made the same way now. I get it's about the skin trade, but, vicar. Just finished season 5 of Fargo on Amazon prime.
The Fargo franchise is quite unique in TV drama, in that each series works as a standalone and they don't have to be watched in sequence. But they all share that weird Coen brothers stamp that elevates them to an art form.
I thought the first two series were very good, didn't like the third, and the fourth, whilst featuring typically weird and wonderful characters (the stand-out being Jessie Buckley as the crazy nurse), was good, but lacked something for me. Perhaps the trademark darkly comic Fargo morality wasn't so well-defined.
But Series 5 is simply superb. The production values are off the scale: it looks and sounds sumptuous. The depths they've gone to to create the weird, hyperreal, modern take on a kind of Grimm's fairy-tale reality are incredible.
As usual, everything is set in an amorphous Minnesota of vast and bleak landscapes, with scenes of breathtaking visual beauty.
Episode 3, which takes place on Halloween 2019 is an extraordinary homage to the horror genre, with a multi-layered symbolism that had me glued to the screen, enthralled. I actually applauded at one point. This is deep stuff. And throughout, the humour is pitch-black.
And all the characters are superb; but the three leads are incredible: Jon Hamm as the sheriff, Juno Temple as the protagonist, and, best of all, Jennifer Jason Leigh as her 'Ayn Rand on steroids' mother-in-law. Just jaw-droppingly good drama.
EDIT: I should also add that this is the most political of all the series, with a fairly obvious anti-Trump/MAGA agenda - libertarian v socialism, perhaps, as sub-theme, as well as what could be construed as polemic on the white male. I found it just a little intrusive, but it didn't spoil the drama.

I'd seen clips of it on social media and as finally arrived on Netflix I've given it a watch. Pretty good and some very funny characters The main guy is played by Ron Livingston who played Captain Nixon in Band of Brothers - who was always drinking Vat 69. |  | | |
