When you’re old the old Hampstead’s need a bit of care, rather than go to Turkey for the full set I booked a hygienist for a half hour clean up, only £70 but she had a patch on her eye & a cutlass. Thanks NHS
I recently managed to get a NHS dentist, having not been in like 15 years. I was expecting terrible news, but got away lightly. A few fillings, which were all preventative rather than immeditaely necessary and I paid extra for this stain removing sandblast for the plaque at the bottom of my teeth.
As I left he asked about my brushing and recommended I get an electric one (oral b series 3, facts fans). Feeling like I'd gotten away with one, I took him up on it and my god. My teeth feel incredible, best they've been in years. Heartily recommend
I have my teeth cleaned three times a year, someone mentioned 'sandblasting' whatever as a fuller procedure, that's standard around here and I'd highly recommend. Yes to electric Oral B's btw, but change the heads every 2/3 months. I've also had my them deep cleaned twice, it's uncomfortable, hygienist really digs into the gums
I avoided the dentist for over 30 years because of a bad experience when I was a kid. I will share it depending on the number of upvotes this get - not for the squeamish.
Recently went after more than 15 years of not going as I just get far too nervous. Had an unavoidable repair for a chipped front tooth. Had to have some procedure where they clean inside your gums then a couple of processes to repair the teeth. But they're much better now and it ended up being more painful for my bank account than for me. Just saying for anyone really nervous, don't leave it, get it done. Modern dentists are far nicer and more modern than the ones I went to as a kid and its really nothing once you get there.
Sore point for me. Due to extended amphetamine abuse as a youngster, my hampsteads became a source of entertainment for all and sundry. I elected not to go down the Turkish route, and as a result, I've ended up spending nearly 25k over the last 6/7 years. You eventually pay dearly for those fun years kids - don't do drugs!!

despite (or because of) my mum being a dental nurse I have a huge phobia of dentists. Not great with anything medical to be fair as hospitals give me a cold sweat too.
only go when something is broken and invested in good electric toothbrushes for the past 30 years. so far the damage isn't too bad and apart from a couple of big caps ive got away with some filling replacements.
avoid popcorn, pork scratchings and bon bon sweets as all 3 have led to bills in the hundreds over the years.
to quote possibly the most most famous film dentist of all.......... 'is it safe?'

It was 1978 and I was 9 or 10. We'd moved and I went to a new dentist in Shepherds Bush. It used to be up some stairs where The Green pub is now.
My previous dentist was great; really smiley, mindful of young kids, etc. The new one wasn't. He was in his 60s and obviously resented having to do NHS kids appointments after a lifetime of private practice. I'd gone there for a check up and hadn't been keen afterwards but my Mum thought I was just acting up. At the check up he highlighted a baby tooth at the back which hadn't come out and was preventing the next tooth. He said to keep an eye on it and go back in a few months.
The tooth started hurting - the one underneath not being able to push through, so had to go back. He was a bit peeved we came back so quick but said it would be a simple extraction. He got ready to inject the gum and as he pushed the needle in he must have been distracted or something. Next thing I hear is a crack and the needle he has used has snapped and I can taste the anaesthetic on my tongue. The needle is in my gum with a little bit poking out.
'Oh dear' he says and asks the nurse for a tool to get it out. As he proceeds to pull the end out it slips and goes into the gum completely. I have a numb tongue and can't speak now and see the nurse's eyes roll in her head. She asks my Mum to wait in the waiting room since it'll be a couple of minutes.
He gets another syringe ready and approaches my mouth again - I'm really uncomfortable and not expecting to enjoy this. As he pierces the skin, in the same place the embedded needle is, I scream. 'OK' he says, let's do this another way. He washes the area with anaesthetic telling me 'it'll not hurt' and then gets a scalpel and cuts the gum to remove the needle. I feel everything and moan with pain - he looks at me and says (this is completely true) 'calm down, it doesn't hurt that much'.
He stiches the gum - 2 stiches - and I'm in tears. He tries to inject me again to do the removal but I'm not having any of it. The nurse looks terrified. He gets a freezing spray out and asks the nurse to call my Mum back in. She sees me with blood over my chin and wonders what's happened - is it safe indeed. He says the re has been a problem with needles (quite) and asks permission to use this spray to numb the tooth since it isn't ordinarily used with kids. She agrees, seeing my pleading eyes.
He sprays my mouth and it goes numb for a few seconds. In that time he whips out the tooth and tells my mum the stiches will dissolve in a few days.
I leave and it takes a couple of hours to get feeling back in my tongue. My mouth ached for days and when the stiches dissolve, they leave a scar on my gum which I still have.
I brush my teeth religiously from that point on because I never want to go to a dentist and managed to make it until early 2010 when I break a tooth.
Always remember my parents' false teeth in the glasses and Steradent. My dad only had one tooth when he was younger than I am now - it was a bit sad when that single tooth was aching and had to be removed.
I'm mid 70s and have a couple of molars missing, but otherwise all in good shape thanks probably to never having been a smoker, Mrs Hants' choice of healthy food and fluoride. I actually don't mind visits to my friendly NHS dentist where she takes good care of me.
My previous NHS dentist (in Hampshire) was a QPR fan, not the greatest practicioner, and conversation was a bit limited with him poking around inside my mouth, but my teeth seemed to survive under his care.

Man, she had the touch of Tony Scully and the bloodlust of Lady Bathory. I was traumatised enough to phone my wife from outside to get it all out of my system before driving. When booking my next appointment I specifically asked them to have it with anyone but her. She's not been there since so I assume she's in prison now for crimes against gob.

Yeah I once went to a see a tyrannical hygienist at my regular surgery who fairly assaulted the inside of my mouth. Dreaded going to see her again but thankfully not long after was an apologetic blanket email to all patients from the dentist saying that she had been relieved of her duties!

About fifteen years ago wifey and I went over to Poland to see a dentist. We knew that we both had a fair bit of work to be done so she researched it and found a very good dentist in Szczecin. Ryan Air flights 99p each way and a hotel suite in the town centre costing forty pounds a night.
We ended up having more done than expected but the first thing he did was to take us to a guy that did nothing but head x-rays. When this was done the dentist went through our x-rays with us at his surgery and made his recommendations.
We ended up paying about a third of UK prices and the work he did was superb, when I get examined over here now every dentist asks where I got the work done. He would drive over the border in to Germany to get all of his supplies.
Unfortunately he only wants Euros these days making him more expensive than before but if you do some thorough research beforehand I would recommend a dental holiday.

Yep in hindsight i should've done similar. Had a couple of implants over the the past few years...ruinously expensive but just about worth it to avoid gnashers resembling Stonehenge.
