Whilst it doesn't carry any weight as a reaction to the punishment for Barton, the completely SEPERATE issue of betting and it's affiliation with football does need to be addressed. It's creating a generation of kids that bet all through the week and getting some twát in marketing to call it a 'cheeky acca' doesn't mean it won't have a big effect on those susceptible to addiction.

Taking bets out of the mans world of a bookies and into a phone app makes it a big problem...

Yeah, lads who sit in front of me at games spend most of it watching their cash out amount change. I know Rangers aren't amazing, but stone me

I liked this bit, good explanation for the length of ban

As for his age, and the fact he is coming towards the end of his career, the
Commission makes these points. He has enjoyed a full career. He has been
breaching the betting Rules for a substantial part of that career. Had he been
apprehended and charged earlier, the result - almost certainly — would have been an
immediate playing suspension (and all the consequences) . He has avoided that and
enjoyed the fruits. He cannot now pray in aid chronology to avoid a meaningful
sanction. Further, a younger player charged earlier in their career might well have a
legitimate sense of grievance if s/he loses part of their career to suspension, but an
older player (by virtue of that fact alone) does not. In the Commission’s judgement,
the suspension must lie where it falls.

So the length of the ban was because of his age. Interesting

no the length of ban was based on 2011 guidelines which he agreed to

If you place a bet on a football match your not involved in, sanction is 0-12 month ban.
If you bet on a game you are involved in a 6 month to life ban
Bet placed on own team to win is 0-6 months
Bet on own team to lose 6 months to life

He did both multiple times, 18 months seems fair.

It's a very good read. Joey Barton comes out of it as a complete moron using ignorance of the rules as an excuse.

They are saying his age has in fact done him a favour with this, the same ban for a younger player would have been much more harming to his career.

But then again he could have played at the top level for another 5 years yet if you ask him.

Yeh, and everybody who looks at the shirts is allowed to use their services. The people wearing them are not, as is made explicitly clear in the rules and their contracts.

Yes, your last sentence is particularly relevant. For reference, currently half the clubs in the Premier League are currently sponsored by non-UK based betting companies:

WEST HAM Betway (Malta) £6m 3.5 year deal (2015-18)
SUNDERLAND Dafabet (Philippines) £6m 2 Year deal (2015-2017)
SWANSEA CITY BetEest (Asia) £5m 1 year contract (2016-17)
CRYSTAL PALACE Mansion (Gibraltar) £5m 1 Years (2016-17)
STOKE CITY Bet365 (UK) £3.5m 3 Year deal (2015-18)
HULL CITY SportPesa (Kenya) 3m 3 year deal (2016-19)
WEST BROM UK-K8.com (Asia) £2.8m 2 years (2016-18)
Burnley FC Dafabet (Philippines) £2m 2 year deal (2016-18)
WATFORD 138.com (China) £1m 1 Year (2016-17)
AFC BOURNMOUTH Mansion (Gibraltar)

There are an additional seven clubs in the Championship with overseas betting companies. Three with 888Sport(Gibraltar)

Yeah there was that flukey one he miss hit for Marseille that looped in.

100% fluke but he claimed it.

Where was the "context" there?

am sure it was, they mention that if he has been breaking the rules for years and enjoying the full benefits of a career without being punished whilst a younger player who got caught would have had his career halted and possibly ruined for this.

Fact of the matter is though he broke the rule not once but over 1,000 times.

Interesting thread.

No arguments against the Barton ban. Apart from my dislike of him, which admittedly colours my judgement, he knew the rules and deserves what he got - playing the victim is part and parcel of a society in which no one wants to take responsibility for their own actions.

Nor do I have any principled ethical objection to betting on football as such. However, there are now bets available for every aspect of the game, rather than just the result. Amounts of corners, free kicks, who to score next, who to concede next. All of which earn money, or lose it, for said betting companies. Is it truly possible to believe that a company who has invested millions, would not at least be tempted to look at patterns, and then think, "We could make a large chunk of our investment back if X beats our sponsored Y by Z amount of goals".

Given Fifa's record involving bribes, and the state of various other sports regarding cheating, be it bribes, drugs, or whatever, surely using betting companies as sponsors has to be tempting fate when the rewards for foul play can swing the odds so dramatically in their favour?

No. He's been betting illegally since 2006. 11 years.

Having been handed a £3 million contract from QPR, a club that was going bust over a £10 million loan from the odious ABC Corp of Panama, when nobody else in English Football would have touched him, he bet against QPR THREE times as a player.

What more do you need to know?

I'd much rather we were sponsored by something more positive personally. Ethics in any sport are so important i think.

How about QPR sponsored by the Big Issue? Who wouldn't buy that shirt?

I used to work at a charity and we came quite close to sponsoring QPR under Briatore as they were looking to improve their image but then Gulf Air came in and money talks

Admittedly not read the whole 65 page document but in it is reference to the fact that the F.A sent him a "Stern" letter over his betting yet Barton still laid more than 700 bets in the 3 following seasons.

That's incredible, if true. For both parties.
