At what cost?? 18:38 - Aug 23 with 7002 viewsWelsh_Ranger

So I remember an article on here a lil while ago & one of the comments had a breakdown of old dodgy knees spending at Brum and more specifically the loan of I think it was Sam Gallagher and how over the course of the season it cost Brum over 4mil. We are broke, everyone whether they have an in depth knowledge of the club or a broad over view knows that!!

How much have these two cost us? What about all our youth players that have now been cast aside from the first team - it seams as if Dave MC was right & the policy has changed again!

Taking account of all the issues we've got to contend with, I think the priority has to be staying in this division, even if that means deviating from the bigger picture temporarily. And, if there's one person I would be inclined to trust amongst the people at the the club, it's Lee Hoos. So, hopefully, this has been done within budget to comply with FFP. Buying would be preferable, but having failed there, we can't just sit on our hands and do nothing.

All for bringing through prospects – I don’t understand Smyth omission at all

However..... relegation.... at what cost? That is the question
Clearly we’ve needed fresher and better striking options for a number of seasons, why left this late I don’t know but you’re probably right that we’ve caved and agreed to terms not in our favour. But again, opportunity cost that and relegation

I’m not going all sugar rush but I just hope they can also address the back 5 and chronic lack of pace without Furlong.
A goalkeeper spells the end of Ingram and from what I’ve seen of him that wouldn’t surprise me. I didn’t subscribe to the clappers view we had ready made replacement for Smithies

We need to hit the ground running; can’t have Schteveee playing the gel card.
Points on board and momentum needed ASAP

there was definitely some money set aside and I doubt Brighton or Burnley are paying huge wages but I take your point... 5 senior strikers at a time of costcutting is something to raise your eyebrows at. let's just hope Hoos has it under control.

They won't be coming cheap, neither will any other loan signings. The option was sign players in the summer who need work and development as we did last year or sign the finished article short term. For all the talk of what a great coach McClaren is he has gone down the Redknapp route. I hope it works though, fed up of seeing us lose

Their wages are £20k a week, we might be paying 50% of this who knows.

To be honest, I'm mystified by some comments on here that we've changed policy, as if it's a universal truth. It's far, far too early to judge whether we've changed policy.

We lost experienced leaders like Ned, Smithies, Mackie, Perch and even Robinson. So far we've brought in Rangel, Wells and Hemed. That's three in for five.

Games played by outgoing players = 333+354+424+405+114 = 1603 games
Games played by incoming players = 419+341+256 = 1016 games

I think it would be madness to go all-out on youth and not to surround some of the promising young lads with some lads who've played more than a handful of games. I don't think we were ever going to try it. And I'm glad we haven't.

I'm delighted we're bringing in a few older lads.

We've been bringing in players from lower leagues for three years now, we've been trying to go the youth route for a couple of years too. We now have a team bottom of the league and unable to compete, great success that was then.

At long last somebody at the club has realised that without quality you are going to struggle. The better players in the squad should now be able to step up, the younger players can also get their chance without the huge expectations being heaped on the likes of Eze.

It might also be a good idea to stop classifying ex Premier League players as going the Redknapp route, we need good players and we are far more likely to find them from clubs above us than below us.

I share some of these concerns, but realistically no-one else wanted either of them so we might get away with only part of their wages.
I’m happier with them than without, we have no young options at striker and outside of the Jackson guy that went to Ipswich I dont know about any other lower league strikers who weren’t horribly overpriced

We've been linked with them for weeks and they weren't gagging at the bit to come. If I was the agent or parent club for Wells or Hemed I'd have jacked up my demands at least 25% after West Brom and another 25% after Bristol City. I expect we're paying through the nose for these ones.

And yes now we have a bloated squad again, unless we can offload Washington to Millwall or someone similar.

I still think that a savvy club, playing to his strengths, could have turned Sylla into a player they could have conned a muggy club like Villa or Stoke to pay £15m for.

But would Barton take him at Fleetwood if we begged

Thats all fine and you may well be right but we'll be spending good money now on loan players who can be recalled in January or best case scenario return to their clubs next summer when we'll be back to square one and need to buy two strikers. I hope it works but we've been down this road before paying for loan players, no guarantee this will work

I’m with you on Smyth, cracking little player
It’s funny how Brentford seem to get it right season after season yet we can’t and are now on the look out for loans, something our DOF was against
It all seems very slap dash all of this

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

Hopefully we have an option to make these permanent so it's not a complete waste. I believe Hemed's contract expires next summer, so he's playing for his next contract. Wells will be under contract but Burnley seem to have no interest in him.

Brian, you have left out Leistner from the additions & that adds on 149 senior games.

Perhaps we have lost experienced leaders, but we fielded a team last Saturday that had only one player under 23 & I believe he is the only player that has played less than 100 professional league games.

In every league match this season we have had at least 8 older, experienced players on the pitch at any time. Maybe none of those are leaders, but it is not experience that we lack.

It may be madness to play more youth, but it is also madness to select players just because they are experienced. Play whoever will perform better irrespective of whether there 18 or 36.

Fair points, Terry.

I just think that every squad needs a balance of experience and youth and that ours had swung too far one way. Like you I hope that the young players continue to develop but I see the logic of these signings to get the balance right. I think the club is committed to finding, developing and selling young players and I honestly don't think they'd let the manager change that even if he wanted to.

I do think we need experience as well as youth but i really dont see the point in loaning in players. We're supposed to be re building the club. Loaning players seems to be us thinking short term again.
Leistner is a completly random player from a german division 2 club that nobody has ever heard of. Oddly we make him captain. Is there no experienced players in the lower leagues in England that we can sign for the right price?. I cant help but think of Hill and Derry two experienced players who spent all their careers in lower leagues. How good were those two.?
What is the point of Penrice now? Les Ferdinand needs to get a grip on things again because our transfer policy is looking very shaky.

I didn't pay much attention to the Leistner captaincy at first but now it looks a bit clumsy. It's put a pressure back on the captaincy that we somehow managed to lose last few seasons. It all seems to have become old fashioned (not that i'm against old fashioned) and unprogressive and clumsy.

My point exactly. This is about as big as a clusterfcuk could ever be. Create a decent young team, then release for free all good players a week before the new season and bring in new management with the worst team in the division destroying all our young players. Then pay drastically over the odds for sh!t loan signings that care nothing for us at the last minute, and bin the good young homegrown players. Unfcukingbelievable incompetence.

Bit harsh?
The only worthwhile players we "released for free" were Need and (maybe) Robinson, and in Neds case we knew that before last season was even finished.

And might be too early to write off two proven championship strikers as "sh!t" given what we have been managing with until now

Union Berlin are a solid Div 2 Bundesliga side based in the country's capital. Kinda like Queens Park Rangers in England.

Leistner was the consensus MoM against Preston, and played well in the first half at West Brom. I assume he's be made Captain on his overall experience. Based on what we've seen this season, who else would you choose? Luongo's excellent when on his game but is otherwise invisible, which has been the case in each match so far this season. Scowen, who has been so solid since he arrived, has had a horrendous start to the League season. Our rancid form is a group issue, and to change that it'll have to happen together or not at all
