Bill Shankly was wrong.............. 23:10 - Jan 21 with 1586 viewssmegma

On nights like this , the trials and tribulations of your football team are irrelevant. Tonight I went to Rayners Lane FC to watch a Middlesex FA Premier Cup 2nd round tie between St Panteleimon and Cockfosters reserves. Nothing untoward happened in the first half with the Saints two nil up. Second half Cockfosters were the better team and if I'm honest I was troubled by the Saints performance , something was amiss and a goal by Cockfosters would have made it a nervy finish to the game. I was stood by the Saints dugout with the regular Saints supporters when I noticed Saints manager George take a call on his mobile phone. I said to my mates 'that's weird taking a call during a match' . The next minute everyone present will never forget the noise emanating from George's mouth as he collapsed on the side of the pitch. The game was stopped by the official as players ran to their manager. One of the Saints players had phoned earlier to say he was running late as he was stuck in traffic. He still hadn't shown up with about 15 minutes to go. The phone call was from a former Saints player who was with ' Thiago' on his way to the game and who had been killed in an accident, crushed to death by a lorry. After about 3 or 4 minutes of discussions with both teams it was agreed the game would be abandoned. As you can imagine all the Saints players were in bits.
It will now be up to the Middlesex FA to decide what happens with the tie. But to be honest I really don't care after tonight. All the Saints players didn't hang around in the clubhouse after which was understandable. On Saturday top of the table Saints are due to host second placed Winslow United. Not sure if it will still be on but like I said, it doesn't matter. Tonight it's all about Thiago and his family and team mates.

A very sad post Chris.

Hope those affected, especially you Smegma, have the support you need at the moment.
The last couple of weeks have shown that there are lots of people who would help if it was required.
All the best

So sorry to hear this. It's really hard when one of your team dies, they're all so young, and in many ways they became a part of your life. I'm still regularly reminded of Ray Jones and Kiyan Prince. How awful for you to be there when the news came through. RIP Thiago and condolences to his friends and family.

You alright, Chris?

You've had a terrible shock. make sure that you look after yourself the next couple of days and talk to people about this. As Karl says, that includes us. We may be half-mad (!) but we're your friends and we will listen.

RIP to Thiago.

I'm fine. Last night I felt like I was intruding on other people's grief. About 15 months ago I was watching St Panteleimon in the FA Vase 1st round when the game was abandoned due to Donald the keeper collapsing. He was carted off in an ambulance but came through. Game was replayed and Saints lost the rearranged game but that was irrelevant. Their victors Cray Valley PM went all the way to the final. As a goodwill gesture Saints management were invited to Wembley.

Very sad news. Take care of yourself though, shock comes in many ways and can be delayed. As Brian said make sure you talk to your friends and workmates and don't keep it inside.

Really sad to read your post. Things like this are so much more personal when it is at lower league level. After matches you mingle with the players and get to know them and their families.

RIP: Sniffer, Doug and Pat

I'm as guilty as anyone, for taking football far too seriously but this is a real tradegy. Not a football one
RIP Thiago

PS sorry for down voting the OP, my 3 yo nephew jumped on me, while I was reading your account

It's always a bit weird when someone you know or can relate to, but who you aren't close to passes away.

You feel like you should be part of the group grieving, but you also feel that you are intruding on the grief of those who were close.

Like a neighbour, that you didn't know to well

A friend of a friend

Or even an old hero who you have never met.

It all messes up your head a little bit.
